Is XP > a part of the issue? That very first "the file" - do you mean a .ged or a .ftw or a .ftm? If you cannot see the file extensions in Windows, you can easily change a default to shown known extensions - something I heartily endorse doing! My speculation is that you are trying to open a .ged (aka GEDCOM). I have 16 and 2012 installed on my desktop, and it is possible to create a way to have the newer program open your file!
