I have using FTM since before I can remember but recently developed a problem that I can not solve ... so far. Whenever I try to backup my FTM database, it crashes FTM and tells me the file failed to backup. And when I open FTM it tells me that the file closed improperly and that I may have to compress it. I compress it till there is 0% compression, but I notice that there is in fact a new backup file that was created. Does any one have a clue as to what may be going on and what to do? Ken Schroeder
If you are talking about FTM 2008 or later, the compact option has an option whether to create a backup before compacting. Make sure that is not checked. Something else that may be creating the backup file is whether you have the option to "automatically" backup checked. What version are you using? 2012 build 388 perhaps? Regardless, try closing FTM allowing it to write its backup file completely. While you are waiting, open Windows Task Master - a single iteration of Ctrl-Alt-Delete at the same time does the trick. Go to Processes and sort by Memory with higher memory usage at the top preferably. Now, restart FTM and watch its memory use as the program loads and it opens your file. Record, the Memory in use as it stabilizes. I suggest that you share the screen half for FTM and half for Windows Task Master. Then, attempt to backup your file. It may very well work at this point! If so, record the maximum memory used by FTM during the evolution. Often times, when FTM 'crashes' during such an operation, the memory usage has exceeded about 1.6 M (but might be as low as 1.0 M). Let me know if this works for you!!! John Okerson Memphis, TN
