Yes, B. J. Ancestry.com. works fine for getting to census, Newspapers, World War One Records, Personal Trees, etc., BUT, there are some of us who are NOT able to get anything but the dreaded Ancestry is down for maintenance through 2012 when clicking on the Green leaves, whether using FTM 2012, 2011. Which indicates there is a server problem at Ancestry and it is NOT the users fault. Now, if the problem continues all weekend, which it appears, is going to be the case, I suspect the Ancestry line will be burning up Monday, and will become another thorn in Ancestry.com's side. As I said earlier, this is the second time this week, that there has been a major problem, on the Ancestry side. Whether it is a server problem, a coding problem or whatever, it is still an inconvenience to users, and those who aren't having the problem, blaming those who are, is not appreciated it. This site, yourself, especially and Linda are usually very helpful, and appreciated. That doesn't happen to be the case in this situation. In a message dated 11/5/2011 10:33:21 P.M. It seems to me that no one is blaming users who are getting the maintenance message from Ancestry.com. For the record, I have had no trouble with either FTM 2012 or Ancestry.com for many days, including just a few minutes ago. ; it seems unlikely that there is a server problem at Ancestry. I'm sorry, I should have been more explicit in my statement. When I click on the Hint leaves, there are two types of hints available. Some are for Sources such as Census, etc and the other are for Member trees. When I click on the "green" Hint leaves, I am taken to a summary page with no problems. Both the Member tree matches are displayed as well as the Census matches. As I said earlier, no one is "blaming" any user simply because it is not their fault. We are not trying to dissuade you from taking what ever action you feel appropriate to your situation. All we are doing and can do is report our experiences with the Hints in FTM 2012 and if we find some particular action is helpful in resolving our problem, offering that as a possible solution. In general, I have found several different types of problems with the Hints and web searches: 1. I am not able to get to the Ancestry.com data bases at all. Normally this is because I'm not connected to the internet or at least FTM doesn't think I'm connected. I tend to go to the Plan work area to see the status of the Web Dashboard. If it is not displayed, then I know FTM is not connected to the internet. Most times I reboot and/or restart FTM and this seems to help. Of course there are other times when nothing helps because some of their servers seem to be down or at least the path between my location and there servers cannot be established within certain time parameters. 2. I am presented with the hints and matches BUT the matching information is not displayed in lower right pane of the web search work area and I cannot gain access to the records. This is normally caused by something being wrong with one of their Index files. Sometimes I experience problems with certain individuals while other individuals have no problems. Generally, I leave and return another time to find the information being displayed and I can gain access to the records. 3. I am presented with a message saying one or more of the Member Trees is not available because it may be down or has been removed. There is nothing I can do about this because I'm not even provided the name of the tree. I assume in these cases the tree has been removed and the index has not been updated. There are now birth records that were not there before, when you access these in the lower right hand pane you get an error message and can not merge. Every time I have received one of these hints there has been at least one or more duplicates. I suspect Ancestry may be trying to correct this and stopped access. If someone is still getting access to these through hints I would like to know that I am wrong. Below is one of the records I am talking about. Ohio, Births and Christenings Index, 1800-1962 about Samuel A. Marconnett Name: Samuel A. Marconnett Gender: Male Birth Place: Highland, Ohio Birth Date: 29 Feb 1872 Father's Name: William Marconnett Mother's Name: Margaret Emmery FHL Film Number: 570609 > 3. Thank you for your comments especially about the ability to turn off the Trees. I had seen the check box in the Options box but thought that only kept your own trees from being searched. I just tried it and it does indeed turn off all trees for being displayed. However, that does not seem to help very much. I have been able to find some individuals where I get the message plaguing a number of people. I will admit that turning off the trees allowed me to find some of the people a bit easier. I found some individuals where I receive a screen saying , "/Check Back Soon We're sorry but search.Ancestry.com is temporarily unavailable. We are undergoing routine maintenance or we may be experiencing unexpected technical problems. We apologize for the inconvenience and ask for your patience as we work to correct the situation. Check back with us shortly./" It does seem to apply to individuals with multiple source matches but I can't tell which matches are causing the problem. I have individuals who do not demonstrate the problem and they may have from 1 to 3 source matches. The sources shown are for Census, Texas Death Index, Texas Divorce Index and SSDI. I went to the same individuals in my AMT and did not encounter the problem. So I suspect you may be right about certain types of records not being supported by FTM 2012 search and unfortunately when one of them is encountered, it blocks access to all matches whether they are impacted or not. Hopefully they will get it corrected soon. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction. As for "not doing trees", I don't normally use the information from the trees because I have found very little of it sourced. However, I do look at the trees especially those with sources as I may find they have found sources which I have not found. So it helps on occasion. BJ, Didn't think I would ever teach you anything. The message you describe is what we are talking about. It has been going for two days now. By the way I am using 2011. We will just have to wait until it is fixed. Not like I don't have plenty of other things to do.
