    1. [FTM-TECH] Source Documentation from Ancestry Public Trees
    2. John Boyd
    3. I often check recommendations from Ancestry.com to specific Public Trees that match my family members. Many of them have excellent documentation attached to specific events. However, until recently, I couldn't merge those specific documents against those specific events into my tree on my computer. All I would get is the source reference to Public Trees on Ancestry.com. HOWEVER, I just found a way. Researching Sarah Whitford, b 1817, d abt 1901, I found a public tree that included the 1870 census. (I hadn't been able to find this particular documentation before). When I looked at the family page in Family Tree Maker, I could scroll down to the attached record for that 1870 census. When I clicked on the link for the census record, FTM/Ancestry takes me to that source record. However, at this point, the Merge window in the bottom right corner is still showing the information from the Public Tree, Once I confirm that this record is my Sarah Whitford, if I click on one of the other people on that census page, and then click back on Sarah's name, the Merge window now is set to merge directly from the census document, not the Public Tree. Takes a little bit of work, but allows me to document the specific events with the correct supporting documentation. (And without worrying about all of the other stuff in that Public Tree that isn't sourced and I don't want to worry about right now.) Note that this is also a great procedure since many of the public trees include attached documents that you won't normally find through regular searches on Ancestry.com. John & Kathleen

    3. Very good tip. I also use that same technique. Here is the way I've found to merge the desired source to the fact alone and not the family tree. 1. Click on the source reference in the Public Tree. This normally opens the browser to the record e.g. 1870 Census. But as John points out, if you try to merge at this point, you will be merging the tree itself. 2. Check the right browser pane and see if there are other references; e.g. WW I Draft Registration card. 3. Click on WW I Draft Registration Card and the browser displays that reference. 4. Again check the right browser pane and find the reference to the 1870 Census and click on it. 5. Click the Merge button and now you are merging only the Census record.
