I've never experienced this. I use two spaces between sentences and they have not been changed. Just to check this I added a note with double spaces following periods and a colon. I then compacted the file reducing the size by 6%. I checked the note and the double spaces were still there. Compacting does not examine the data. It is examining records and links or addresses. It rebuilds the index addresses i.e. the links between the records. If it finds addresses which are invalid, it removes the addresses and it releases any unused space. Double spaces following periods or colons in notes are not unused space and are not examined during the compacting process. I don't know why your double spaces are disappearing but it is certainly not caused by compacting.
