I have many folks like John Okerson, Sr., John Okerson, Jr., John Okerson, 2nd, John Okerson, II within my tree from FTM 16. I imported them using the .ftw that FTM 16 uses. When imported into FTM 2012 build 388, I see them listed a Okerson, Sr. John in the Index using People view, Family. A name like John Okerson, 2nd appears as Okerson, 2nd John in the People view, Family Index and 2nd John Okerson in the rightmost column in the People view, Person. I have a multitude of Military Titles within the file too, and they appear in a similar way. Is this the way it is supposed to be????? I have the Index sort done using Family, Given Name if that matters.
John, No, it should appear as Okerson, John 2nd. When you have one of these in view, go to the Right Hand Panel I the Family View and click in the name field. A little pencil icon will appear. Click on that and you can then put 2nd in the Suffix field where it belongs. Another option would be to use slashes ( / ) as used in FTM 16 but if you do that then later need to make a change to the name, it might revert. In my database I have several people listed by the naming pattern here in Costa Rica in which two surnames are used (paternal & maternal). Unless I use the slashes or the click on the pencil, the first surname is treated as a Given name and the last as the surname which is incorrect. If I use the slashes and later click in that name field, it will revert, so I found that using the pencil icon is the best way. Did these names display correctly in the Index in FTM 16? In 2012, it works exactly as you describe. Thanks! > Did these names display correctly in the Index in FTM 16? Yes indeed. He would show up as John Okerson, 2nd in FTM 16. There is no suffix field available in 16. I suppose I shall have to learn to live with military titles preceding individuals names. Oh well.
