    3. I wonder if you mean GB when you refer to MB? W7 64 bit and FTM 2012 will work with 2 GB of RAM Your message is a bit ambiguous in that I am not sure if you want to download a file from Ancestry.com c/w media or from her FTM 2010? I would have thought that it would be no problem to download her tree from Ancestry.com on her computer and also download the media In terms of FTM 2010 a File >Backup with the included media items check box ticked will also capture all the information John D -----Original Message----- From: ftm-tech-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ftm-tech-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of John Okerson Sent: Saturday, 29 October 2011 10:31 AM To: ftm-tech@rootsweb.com Subject: [FTM-TECH] An Ancestry.com/FTM 2012/FTM16 question and suggestionsrequested. please I have an 11th cousin - OK quit laughing folks - who has a presence on Ancestry.com with a tree of over 8,000 folks and a multitude of media items. While she is a Mac user at heart, but owns a Windows PC notebook and FTM 2010. Her notebook is 2 years old and moderately low powered, but with 3 MB of RAM and Windows 7 Professional 64 bit - and here *I* thought one HAD to have 4 MB of RAM to get 64 bit mode to work. What we want to do is download the entire collection of names/dates/places/relationships/notes/sources/etc and also all of the media, still associated with the correct individual. Suggestions on how to do what she needs would be welcomed. FTM 16 fits in because with a low powered notebook, using FTM 2010 or FTM 2012 might not be an acceptable option for this "visual" person. My thought would be to port the entire tree over to FTM 16 to get her the speed she desires. Thanks for any and all help. John Okerson Memphis, TN **********************************

    3. > I wonder if you mean GB when you refer to MB? Sorry I made that mistake. > W7 64 bit and FTM 2012 will work with 2 GB of RAM Ok. I really had not known that one could use less than 4 GB and still have 64 bit mode, but suppose it must be so. The question for my cousin is whether or not she will perceive the program to be fast enough. Very difficult to know in advance and she lives several hundred miles away, so an afternoon's visit is not too likely either. > Your message is a bit ambiguous in that I am not sure if you want to download a file from Ancestry.com c/w media or from her FTM 2010? I left it vague intentionally. What I suspect may have to happen is to go to Ancestry.com with her username and password via FTM 2012. Then download her entire tree and media files. Next, convert it to FTM 2010 format and load same on her notebook PC. My questions include 1) would it be legal for me to do the above, 2) do we believe it would work, 3) would I be able to export the file to FTM 16. Other suggestions welcomed. > I would have thought that it would be no problem to download her tree from Ancestry.com on her computer and also download the media Downloading the media changed between 2010 and 2011, from what I have read on the web site. I do not have 2010, nor 2011, but do have 16, 2009 and 2012 (build 388). > In terms of FTM 2010 a File >Backup with the included media items check > box ticked will also capture all the information And that would most likely work IF she had done her work from FTM and then sent it to Ancestry.com. Instead, this lady did her work on Ancestry.com and has downloaded a .GED file. She also has all of the media she has uploaded to Ancestry.com on one of her computers (of at least 3). While it would be possible to add the media locally, after importing the .GED file into FTM 2010, it seems considerable effort if the 2012 download/convert plan were to work. Having her buy the FTM 2012 upgrade would sure help her maintain the names/dates/places as well as the media, using TreeSync.

    3. Very interesting problem and as you surmise not going to be easily resolved. The problem is how does one get the data AND images from the AMT into a file she can use. Downloading the AMT into FTM 2010 will not work because it will not download the images. The only program which will download the AMT and images is FTM 2012. Once you've done that what options does she have? Forget about trying to convert the tree into FTM 16, the only way of doing that is to export the data file to GEDCOM and that will automatically lose the images. So she would have to manually add all of the images into the appropriate scrapbook in FTM 16. You can use FTM 2012 to convert the file to FTM 2010. Unfortunately I don't have FTM 2010 installed so I haven't tested how successful that conversion is. I suspect that FTM 2010 will run slower and have more problems on her machine than FTM 2012. I have noticed some improvement in speed and performance in FTM 2012 so I think it would be better to have her migrate to FTM 2012 but you may want to run some tests using her machine. *Is it legal *for you to access her AMT and download it. Sure why not? Only the owner can download a tree. She has given you her ID and password. If you use them and download the tree, you can then give the file to her. I see no problems with that. I have two Ancestry.com IDs and Passwords and am able to switch between them with no problems. You simply Log out of your ID and Login with hers. * Will it work?* Yes, using FTM 2012 you have two choices. You can either download the AMT as a synced file or as an unlinked file. I suggest you do it as a UNLINKED file. Otherwise the tree will be synced to your machine and will have to be unlinked at a later time. The main question is *How well will it work?* That depends upon how she has managed the AMT and its images. Factors which will make the download easier are 1. Make sure that all of the AMT media items have assigned "Picture Names". This is the name displayed below the image thumbnail in the AMT Media Gallery. The Picture Name is downloaded as the Thumbnail's Caption and it is used as the Media file name. If there are no Picture Names assigned, a generic file name is assigned and may not be names she wants to use. 2. Make sure that all of the AMT media items are linked to an individuals; otherwise, you or she will have to go into FTM 2012 and link the media items to the appropriate person. In the AMT Media Gallery, click on the media image, this will open the detail view for the media item. On the right side of the view, you can see to whom the picture is linked. Hope this helps somewhat. BJ On 10/29/2011 7:25 AM, John Okerson wrote: > I left it vague intentionally. 3. BJ, I am positive that 2011 will download an AMT file into FTM including images, and I think 2010 would also.
