    2. Debbie via
    3. Russ, Your video (http://ftmuser.blogspot.com/search/label/HistoricalPlaces) was very helpful. Thanks for sharing that. Can you provide advice on the following: 1. Laughlinton, Ligonier Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, USA I like to capture the Township name in addition to the town because sometimes I only have the township and it's helpful to have as much information as possible. Do I put the "township" (Ligonier Township) or the "town" (Laughlinton) in the "Place Details (historical name, address, church, cemetery, etc.)" field? 1B: Present day Long Island, NY: USA >> New York >> Suffolk County >> Town of Brookhaven >> Bellport 2. For people born "at sea" or on a specific vessel? For example, "he was born at sea aboard the SS Kennedy." 3. Hesse-Cassel (later known as Prussia, Germany) 4. Plymouth Colony in Colonial America I appreciate any tips you can offer! Debbie

    1. Re: [FTM-TECH] Blank Surnames
    2. BJ via
    3. Ken, Thank you for your comments. The list is great for getting new ideas and techniques. I don't have as many people as you. My data base only has abour 2500 individuals. I've been using the technique for so long (probably before FTM 10) that I haven't encountered the problem you describe. It sounds as though it is an addressing problem and maybe the index sorting didn't complete. I know that the index is sorted in the background so as to not cause too much delay. If it happens again, I suggest you resort the index, wait a while and then compact the data base. Hopefully it won't happen again. Believe it or not but they have improved on the stability of the data base. In fact I think they have changed the data base two or three times in an effort to get better performance. FTM 16 and earlier used a proprietary data base structure. When they rewrote the program for FTM 2008, they elected to use a commercial data base but I'm not sure whose. BJ On 2/25/2015 3:56 PM, Ken Schroeder via wrote: > BJ, > I used to enter Ada Unknown or Unknown Smith. I liked your method of handling blank surnames better than how I was handling them, so I changed about 50 Unknown names. Then I compacted the FTM file. The Compact crashed the FTM 2014 program, which was stable during Compact (every day). I restarted the program and compacted the FTM file again and the Unknown names were changed but were not located in the People Name Index at the top of the Index. They were at the location where Unknowns used to be in the People Index. I then sorted the People Index by "Given Name, Family" instead of my default "Family, Given Name". The People Index then relocated the changed Unknown surnames to the top of the People Index, the sort order it should be in.I then resorted the People Index back to my default order of "Family, Given Name". The sort order remained correct, at the top of the Index. I did a Backup and shut down. This morning I opened FTM 2014 and the People Index sort order is back ! to! > the incorrect location, alphabetically with the Us.So, I resorted the Index by "Given Name, Family", as I successfully had the night before. The changed Unknowns had then completely disappeared from the Index.I then resorted the Index back to my default "Family, Given Name" order. The Changed Unknowns not only reappeared in the Index but were in the proper sort order at the top of the Index. Oh, ANOTHER mystery of FTM 2014 ... unless my Windows 8.1 64 bit 8GB system is acting up, or I'm using up all my resources, etc. I have 6443 people with 39,000 facts and 1900+ media. FTM size 55 MB and FTM backup file size 3.95 GB.Of course, I can not predict what tomorrow morning will bring as to whether the Changed Unknowns will be present much less sorted in the proper order. And yes I do have a Compacted Backup FTM file from before the changing of Unknowns to your method of Ada (W/John Smith) __________ was implemented. By the way I really like that methodology. And I am fully awa! re ! > of the fact that there are those who will say, this doesn't happen on > my system and will defend FTM 2014 to the hilt. But I can assure you it has happened on my system.I love FTM 2014 even with its quirks, but as a former reliability engineer and software programmer, the platform is not totally stable in my opinion. But how many programs are REALLY bug free? Not many, I'm afraid, if you consider all the potential variables and combinations involved in software usage.Bottom line, Judy in Ocala started the very interesting thread of emails by asking "what everyone would like to be altered/added to FTM 2014". The original question mostly got side-tracked unfortunately into FTM 16 vs FTM 2014 but I found the thread interesting, if not fully addressing Judy's all important question. What a chance to add input to the next generation FTM BEYOND bug complaints. What I would like for FTM 2014 is to be first and foremost STABLE and bug free within reasonable limits of commercial development efforts and cost. My software development background was more! h! > igh reliability demanding then the average commercial packages. But I am not anticipating that level of reliability from FTM 2014 ... not for it's affordability and commercially viable price range. After stability and known bug fixes, then I have a wish list of features (not complaints) that I would like implemented. But that is for another email to be composed. Thank you all who contributed to the thread that Judy started with a very simple yet important question. From some of you I learned what I already knew and that is simply but bluntly put "some people just don't read user manuals". From others I learned that "change is hard for them" (human nature). From others I learned some new ways (for me) of approaching some fundamental issues of data management and organization. I always learn something from Russ and you, BJ. That's why I keep abreast of FTM-Tech emails ... learn learn learn!!!

    1. Re: [FTM-TECH] The Great Debate
    2. Timothy N. West via
    3. Russ, I would like to argue authoritatively with you but unfortunately I can't. I no longer have FTM16 on my desktop. Thought I might still have it on my laptop but it's not there either. So I went looking for my installation disks and apparently I decided to throw them away when I made the decision to stay with FTM2014 (even though I still have the FTM2008, FTM2010, and FTM2012 disks - go figure!). Arg! I wished I could see an FTM16 version so I could show you. I still have printed books made with FTM16 that include bibliographies that only include sources specific to the people in the book. I know I did not edit the bibliography to remove the non-relevant entries - that would be too much like work. I know I created specific bibliographies all the time. I would often include them in responses to various queries to provide evidence (or where to find the evidence) for my assertions about particular families and relationships. Now if someone wanted to donate me an FTM16 installation disk, I'd install it so I could show you how to create a content specific bibliography. But for the sake of the discussion, let's say you are right; that still leaves the bibliography report as relatively useless unless you want to create a book of everyone in your database or you want an every source bibliography report for some other reason. I don't think most people create books of everyone in their database. I'd say the book is usually about a subset of people in the database; for instance, your maternal side or your paternal side or your side versus your spouse's side. In any other book one would create or read, you'd never find sources in the bibliography unrelated to the content of the book. Why does FTM2014 do that? It makes no sense. .tim west. I've been unable to figure out how to do that in FTM 2010, FTM 2012, and now FTM 2014. Unfortunately, even within the Book Feature, creating a bibliography includes all sources within the FTM file regardless of their use within that book. There is no way to tell the bibliography feature to only produce the list of sources used for select individuals. We used to be able to do this in FTM 16 and earlier versions. It disappeared when FTM 2010, 2012, and now 2014 were released. And since I'm wishing for changes with the bibliography, I would like to see the annotation paragraphs (within the bibliography) indented to make it easier to see where each bibliographic entry begins and ends. FTM 2014 provides a hanging indent for the source and then again with the annotation. Yes, bibliographic source entries are separated by a white space line but so are the annotations. Because both the bibliographic source entry and its respective annotation are formatted exactly the same, it is not easy to scan the bibliography looking for a specific entry even when alphabetized. Looking through a 106 page bibliography to find a specific source, while not impossible, is not as easy as it should be because the annotations appear to the brain to mess up the alphabetic sequence. I thought I might be able to use font changes to distinguish but, alas, FTM does not provide that level of font granularity. FTM2010-2014 do offer the option to show a dotted line divider between sources but the dotted line is very faint and thus doesn't really help the reader. Below is a quick sample output of what I see and what I would like to see. 1. [FTM-TECH] Blank Surnames
    2. Ken Schroeder via
    3. BJ, I used to enter Ada Unknown or Unknown Smith. This morning I opened FTM 2014 and the People Index sort order is back to the incorrect location, alphabetically with the Us.So, I resorted the Index by "Given Name, Family", as I successfully had the night before. And I am fully aware of the fact that there are those who will say, this doesn't happen on my system and will defend FTM 2014 to the hilt. My software development background was more high reliability demanding then the average commercial packages.

    3. Hi Robbie I am sorry to say Family Archive Viewer, Ver. 4.0 will not work with windows 7, it has to be windows vista or lower. It is possible if you were to set up a virtual PC, and then run XP on your virtual PC it will work, as I have done it. But it not sort of thing to do without some IT experience and a fairly big hard drive. Plus copy all the CD into a folder and run that way, the CDs take up about 23Gb but I does run better. 3. Debbie and Russ, How hard is it to Locate where the colony was and pin it? Then it is done for the next time you use it. I always use Township and County, if known, for two reasons. Not infrequently there are towns with the same names as Townships and/or Counties within a state that are dozens or even hundreds of miles apart. This helps others find where I'm talking about. Knowing the Township also is valuable in finding rural cemeteries. Jay Thompson just an old genealogy nut too tough to crack. 1. Re: [FTM-TECH] The Great Debate
    2. Timothy N. West via
    3. I would like to see them add back the ability print a bibliography containing only those sources requested. Currently it appears one can only print a bibliography that contains all sources defined within your FTM file. This makes the bibliography report essentially useless unless one is creating a report or book for ALL people in your FTM database. With FTM 16, I could generate a report about a group of specific people and attach a bibliography of only those sources relevant to that group of specific people. (Note: The dotted lines are a lot darker here than they appear in the FTM Source Bibliography report). ======Current FTM2014 Sample======= Bible of Goldman Smith and Letha Hammock Smith (Texas Centennial Blue Ribbon Bible; John A Hertel Company, Chicago, IL; 1948), Debbie Reynolds, 15 Mandy Lane, Forsyth, GA 31029. 1. [FTM-TECH] FTM 2014 Bibliography Report options
    2. R. Humphrey via
    3. Individual Report - when "Include sources" is selected from Items to Include, then just the sources for that person's facts are included. Of course these are FTM's "Reference Notes" which include the full citation information. Family Group Sheet - same as for the individual report, but includes children as well. Still, the full reference note is printed. For a plain Source Bibliography report for one or a group of individuals, first export that person or group to a Family Tree Maker file (no need to include media) and be sure to check the box "Include only items linked to selected individuals". After restoring from the exported ftmb backup file, run the Source Bibliography report. Perhaps not as smooth as being able to do this from within a larger tree, but it is clean. Perhaps the developers will enhance the report with the "individuals to include" options which appear in other reports. Richard

    3. Tim, You said: "I would like to see them add back the ability print a bibliographycontaining only those sources requested. I've been unable to figure out how to do that in FTM 2010, FTM 2012, and now FTM 2014." I just when into Version 16, selected View, Reports, Bibliography and the information in the Report was the SAME as the Publish Workspace, Sources Report, Bibliography, with the same Annotated Bibliography as in FTM2014. They look the SAME. I do not have that option to select people in Version 16, the same as in FTM2014 Russ ___________________________ Mailto:rworthington@att.net ________________________________ From: Timothy N. (Note: The dotted lines are a lot darker here than they appear in the FTM Source Bibliography report). ======Current FTM2014 Sample======= Bible of Goldman Smith and Letha Hammock Smith (Texas Centennial Blue Ribbon Bible; John A Hertel Company, Chicago, IL; 1948), Debbie Reynolds, 15 Mandy Lane, Forsyth, GA 31029. 3. I agree completely about the use of Unk, ? and even __________. The reason I use the shorter version is so I can see more of the more meaningful information in the Name field and the Index. "Husband of" is 10 characters versus "H/" which is 2 characters. I get the same information but save 8 characters. Most of the display fields for the name display about 24 to 30 characters. While I can see more of the name by hovering the cursor over the name field, I don't like to see those extra 8 characters before I see the more meaningful information of the husband's name. Just a matter of choice. I have found many people develop their personal ways of tweaking their memory assisting in their research. There is no one set way of doing many things especially in FTM 2014. That's the great thing about this list is the sharing of techniques and ideas.
