John, Those features are on the WEb Site and in FTM-3. I am submitting a research request and was asked to provide a listing of the sources I have already obtained. Is there a way to generate a list of source citations associated with a specific individual and 2 or 3 generations of descendants? Thanks! Debbie
Go to Publish > Source Usage Reports. Then click on Create Report. While it is generating, click on Select Individuals and select the individual you want. There is no easy way to answer your questions as it depends upon what information you really want and the format you want the information printed in. Here are your choices: Sources: 1. Listing of Sources and their information such as author, publisher, etc. is normally accomplished using a Bibliography. Unfortunately, the Bibliographies provided within FTM cannot currently be extracted based upon the individuals. The provide a listing of all Sources. 2. You may print a listing of Source titles and their repositories selected by specified individuals using the Publish, Source Reports, Source Usage Report. You may select the sources to be included by individuals. The minimum report will show the Source Title, the Repository and a listing of individuals and their facts associated with the Source Title. The report is listed by Source Title with the individuals and facts listed beneath the source title. If you want the source-citations, there is an option that lets you include them in the report. Source-citations: 1. You can generate this listing by individuals using the Endnotes and selecting for specific individuals. The Endnotes will be listed at the end of the report and may or may not start on a separate page. The Endnotes themselves will not contain any pointers or listing with whom they are associated. 2. Most of the charts, Pedigree and descendants, can optionally include a list of the source-citations by clicking on the Items to include and selecting the Include Sources options. This may suit you a little better as the source-citations are normally printed on separate pages of the chart. Again the listing does not contain any pointers or list indicating the individuals or fact associated with the Source-citation. Not sure whether any of these choices meet your need or not. After your message, I tried the link. I was able to download FAV.EXE. It is 20 mb so it took some time with my slower internet speed but it eventually completed. I then installed it with no problems. One word of caution, after it has downloaded, the progress window sets there for about 30 seconds as though nothing is happening. I left it alone and it eventually began processing. The FTM Archive Viewer was eventually installed. I'm running under Windows 8.1 Pro. BJ On 2/27/2015 12:12 PM, Harold & Elaine Brattland via wrote: > Have you been able to get the download to work? Harold, WHAT doesn't happen for you? Are you installing AS Administrator? Most of the information on the CD's has been put online or incorporated into Family Search or Ancestry. Despite that, I have the whole set, and find them very useful. You can download Family Archive Viewer from http://www.genealogy.com/abtffiv.html. This is Version 11 and works with Vista, Windows 7 and 8. Joannie, Not really because most if not all are Online now, more up to date, and readily available. You might consider donating them to a local genealogy or historical society. Regarding the posts on unknown names.... If you add the word "Unknown" or things like "husband of John Smith" it will screw up the search results when Ancestry (or family search) is doing searches to identify potential matches to the record (i.e. "tips"). I don't like leaving it blank and use --?-- for any unknown names. This helps with the sorting process. All names that have a first name and no last name will appear at the top of the name list with the following format: --?--, Jane --?--, Dorothy Anna I also use it for missing first names: Richardson, --?-- And in cases where I don't know either name. For example, if a document says "the couple had three children." --?--, --?-- I can easily figure out who the person is by looking at the other family members. It also looks decent in reports. It's a system that's worked well for me. PS: You can do a "find and replace" to replace the word "Unknown" with "--?--". Debbie
I use RESIDENCE for Town, County, State, CountryI use ADDRESS for Street I use POSTAL CODE for Zip CodeI use CENSUS for Wards, Assembly Districts I'm thinking of adding BUILDING NUMBER As I have lots of families living on the same block in New York City Drew Cold Spring, Putnam Co., NY O|||||||O Modeling the New York Central in N Scale and Trainz Backyard Birding & Gardening in the New York Hudson Valley Genealogy HERLIHY, GOULDING, GREENE, LALIME & LENT, LYNT, van LENT Homepage: http://drucifer.net/index.html
Lots of discussion on Unknown Names. Each of us needs to determine how WE hand to handle Unknown Surnames and unknown Given Names. Here is my experience and why I have chosen how I handle these two situations. For unknown Given Names, I use 5 underscores For unknown Surnames, I use 5 underscores Two reasons. 1) readers of a report or chart, love to help me out by "filling in the blanks". 2) using the Web Search workspace, the fields are filled in, in the manner that Ancestry.com's will accept and provide appropriate results. Those two reasons have worked for me for years. Look at the list of Surnames, If you don't use that, then other ways may work for you. At a glance, I know how many surnames I am missing. If I am reading a report, I don't miss that fact that I am missing a name with the other options that have been suggested. I really don't care, but I find the Output from my work a little more readable and someone not familiar with genealogy or the report will quickly understand that I don't know that name. I don't include some relationship indication with the unknown name because the chart or report will show me that relationship. When I tried to determine how I wanted to handle Unknown Names or any other change in my database, I check input AND output. At the top of the People Workspace, Tree View, I have a list of unknown names, Surnames and Given Names. IF I want to work on one of them, I can always select that name and see the relationship. I don't search from that point. But when I see a Shaky Leaf by one of those unknown names, they are really good hints. That hint may not be the Surname, but those HINTS HAVE, in fact, helped me identify the name of that unknown named person. As I said earlier, the Web Search workspace form is filled in, with the 5 underscores AND does provide valid results. I rarely put any other information into that search form but get results. So, the Easy to spot people, the readability of charts and reports, the Web Search feature is the reason that I use 5 underscores. I chose 5 because I didn't want to make it so obvious that I didn't know the name, that it might have a negative impact to the reader, but I want it to be a gentle reminder that I have work to do. One final "naming" thing. I do NOT use Married names for females. I am consistent in my naming convention. If I don't know that married females birth surname, 5 underscores. One users opinion.
