I am generally unhappy with FTM v.16 because it does not allow two windows to be open at the same time. Am I missing something here that I can set up to make those changes within FTM? I do not use a Mac, but do use FTM 16. Under Windows XP or Windows 7, you can have two different FILES open, NOT two different windows! There is no configuration requirement on your part to do this, it is just there already. If you truly NEED to have two windows of the identical file open, you could copy the first file with a different name and then open it. Technically they are different databases, but YOU would need to exercise considerable care to make sure that ALL of the changes you make are on the ONE file you started with, or risk loosing your data between having two very similar files. Does this resolve your issue??? As for diacriticals, do you mean importing a file that already contains them? Under Windows, they aren't a problem either. Windows 7 has a very useful program called Character Map that makes adding them fairly easy. John Okerson Memphis, TN

    3. Hmmm. Interesting. I've never opened a "New Window" before, but it did open in Chrome just now. And now that I think of it, from the Source Citation dialogue box, "View Source Online" opens in Chrome, too. Maybe my memory is colored by my visceral distaste for all things IE, so that the (evidently) few times something has opened in IE have overwhelmed all other experiences. Thanks, BJ. The developers have said that it uses the default browser so I have to go with that. If you go to the Web Search work area and open a web search window, there is an icon just to the left of the Address field. Hovering the cursor over the icon, labels it as Browser Options. Clicking the down arrow drops a list of options, one of which is New Window. Clicking on that option, opens the current page using the default browser, in my case FireFox. 3. Actually, I periodically get the error using IE8, too. I uninstalled IE9, and most of the time it works fine, but every so often something will happen and I get the script error and, at the same time, lose the ability to scroll with my mouse. (I can still "scroll" using the up and down arrow keys.) Closing and reopening FTM gets rid of the problem, but that's not exactly a solution. How do you use a different web browser in FTM? I've never seen an option to switch away from IE. 3. Sorry but that message is specific to what browsers can be used with Ancestry.com. Not what browser FTM uses. I quote: Recommended web browsers for Ancestry.com Question What web browser should I use when using Ancestry.com? I think answer ID 5307 may provide more insight as to what FTM Web Search is doing. 3. When it is shown within the FTM window, there is no way to tell which browser it uses.
