>I know about the pdf not being availabe. What about the other export >options? Did they go away? No john not too much geek. I do have an xp machine and a pdf creator. The other choices in that drop down window are NOT available in any operating system. Which ones are available depends on the item selected. If you were to choose a Genealogy Report, any of the three kinds, you would have all of the options except CSV available. If you were to choose Birthday Report - mind you I am doing this from FTM 16 - you would have all 4 options available. A gentle suggestion for your consideration is to allow the update to 16 from 2006. There isn't much difference between the two, but there is a little. Both 2006 and 16 use the same file format, so that doesn't change. Before you do so, be sure you have your 2006 CD handy just in case the installation fails. John

Is there something wrong with my software or are these options no longer viable? Your software is just right! You have at least two other alternatives though. Least cost would be to install a third party PDF generator. BJ recommended Bullzip and I use it myself. While the bullzip program does not enable PDF making the old way, you CAN print to your Bullzip "printer" and it creates a PDF. Presuming that you own Windows 7 64 bit, and that you have either Professional or Ultimate (NOT Home), then you can download Virtual PC for free from Microsoft. Once configured, you can start a Virtual PC under Windows emulating Windows XP Professional. Printing to a USB device there is a bit different, but not tough. [Supposedly, if you have Windows 7 32 bit, you are able to print to a PDF through the normal driver. Anyone out there using 32 bit Windows 7 and FTM 2006 or 16 care to reply, please?] My experience has been that 8 MB of RAM in your Windows 7 machine is a good starting point, so that you can have 4 MB dedicated to the Virtual PC WHEN you need to run it. Virtual PC releases the RAM it uses when you reboot the computer, or get Virtual PC to quit, so you do NOT loose the RAM entirely. I believe the default for Virtual PC is only 512K of RAM, and as long as you have a SMALL file, you might be able to use it. My .ftw is 450 MB. :) Another option is to have kept your old computer with Windows XP or Vista and WHEN you need to create a PDF, copy your data file to that machine for the moment, generate your reports and be done with the machine until it is needed again. Yes, Sons of the American Revolution. When Ancestry first offered them in July, you couldn't merge the information or media image to a Family Tree file. Been around here a long time, but do not know what SAR means. Harold Dozier ftm-tech-request@rootsweb.com wrote: Today's Topics: 1. SAR records Can Now be Merged (John Boyd)
Just noticed that SAR records can now be merged from Ancestry.com to FTM on your computer. Includes the image of the original application. John & Kathleen
Is there a way to open the PNA file? It is a db3 file, which should open or link to MS Access. I would like to edit this file. Peter
As well as BJ's answer, for further reading and some useful screen shots, steps etc, go to the old FTM Knowledge base at http://pastftm.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/pastftm.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php and look at article 2777 It commences "Family Tree Maker 2005, 2006 & 16 Update for Windows Vista & Windows 7 Question I recently updated to Windows Vista or Windows 7, but now I find certain functions in Family Tree Maker (specifically PDFs, like when I export a book) stop working. Is FTM 16 compatible with Windows 7 32 bit? Russell D. Casey
I doubt it. I suspect they have it password protected or locked in some manner. BJ On 8/25/2011 4:30 PM, Peter wrote: > Is there a way to open the PNA file? It is a db3 file, which should open > or link to MS Access. I would like to edit this file. >
Yes, many people are running it under Windows 7 32-bit and even 64-bit machines. The only problem area of which I'm aware is the use of the built-in PDF generator. You can always work around that by using a 3rd party PDF generator installed as a printer device. Hope this helps. Dorothy, The percentage that was mentioned in the post you replied to is from one of the newer versions of FTM that tells the user how much the size of the file was decreased by using the compact operation. In other words, the file was decreased in size by 50.5%. What you are seeing in v16 is a progress bar that is telling you that the compact operation has completed when it reaches 99-100%. I hope this helps. Yes, 50.5% is a LOT. However, it doesn't mean the file has been *completely* compacted. You need to keep doing it until the messages is: reduced by 0.0%. Then you know the file is compacted. I wouldn't be surprised if you had to compact your file 4 times before you reach 0.0%. I know, there's times I've had to. The folks at Ancestry alerted me to this.
