    3. Yes, of course, David. My site is not designed to prevent that. My aim is only to make things difficult for genealogy "name collectors" who like to download a GEDCOM and add it to their tree without validating the supposed connection. They can of course copy and paste from my site but that is hard work for them. If they are smart enough to use automated harvesting, they are smart enough not to be name collectors who think it is OK to marry people from the 18th and 20th centuries, or have mothers give birth aged 5 or 95. There will always be people who do garbage things with one's data. I'm pretty philosophical about that, as I believe the benefits of publication online outweigh the disadvantages. I just try not to make it too easy for them. 2. I am sorry you feel resentful of my insinuation. My experience with Ancestry is that people just put a name with a family and NO REFERENCE such as a census. OR, they just REPEAT misspellings, instead of taking the time to correct it. What I do, BEFORE I add an individual who is associated in my tree, I LOOK for censuses or obits or marriage records to ENSURE the HINT is FACTUALLY associated with the individual in my tree. When I find spelling errors on the census, I make an ALTERNATIVE correction to Ancestry, so that a future researcher of my family/families, will be able to find the reference. I have come across people with your stated experience, who have CONCOCTED a story that sounds SO believable, only to find out that it was all pure speculation, made to sound like it was fact, as you described in your e-mails. BUT, to allow the fallacies to continue is just as bad as initiating it in the first place. In a message dated 10/12/2011 11:57:28 P.M. Funnily enough, though, I have no problem with that. My tree did a very fast initial sync. The media took a little more time to upload, of course, but still faster than during the beta test. Since that initial sync, keeping things up to date has been a breeze - a matter of a few seconds each time. What is baffling is why having FTM 2012 set to sync automatically in the background should affect the reloading and refreshing of the Index within FTM. Clearly the auto sync will use resources but why does that only affect the Index? When the Index hung, I was able to move quite normally around all the other workspaces and tabs in FTM. 3. You're welcome, Tom. I'm glad this solution also worked for you. Ancestry need to take a look at this because automatically syncing with Ancestry should not cause the Index in FTM 2012 to hang. It did not cause me any problems with exactly the same database when I was beta testing FTM 2012 Tree Sync. I've submitted feedback here: http://goo.gl/cYE1y and would encourage you to do the same. I switched to automatic syncing and the wait to build the Index was significantly less than I was experiencing earlier. *amazed*( :) I switched back to manual because I don't like to have to wait while it syncs at the beginning. I doubt very much that I will be updating anything via the web tree so I don't see any point in syncing at both the beginning and the end of using the program on my PC. 3. Tom, I only have just over 5,000 individuals in my tree and was experiencing exactly the same problem. I changed the settings so that the tree was not trying to sync automatically with Ancestry and the problem went away. On the Plan workspace, close to the top right hand corner, there is a "Sync Now" button. To the right of the button is an arrow for a drop down menu. From that menu choose Sync Options. The Update Options window will open. Change the "Update linked trees" setting from "Automatically" to "Manually". I don't have any problem remembering to sync my tree manually from time to time during data entry. I always do so before I back up and then shut down FTM 2012. 3. Carmeletta, After you have chosen the Selected Individuals, the Save Dialog box will open. Where is says, "Save As Type" be sure it says "Family Tree Maker (*.FTW). Saving it that way will include all of your media for those who are included in the file. It will NOT include all of the media items in your file, only for those individuals you have selected to include. If you Save As Type GEDCOM (*.GED) then NO media will be included. As was mentioned by another lister, the person you share your file with must have FTM 16 or a later version of FTM or a program that can open FTW files. I hope this helps. Gordon - have you given serious consideration to moving to FTM 2012 as it would allow your database to shed the media files from the database itself! This would significantly reduce the size of the file you open and copy as you exit, thus improving those speed items. Just a thought for you.

    3. Gordon, These files are embedded or are they linked to your FTM 16 file? It has been a LONG time since I have seen version 16, I do not remember how these images are handled. I would NOT do any more renaming as this is messing up all of the internal links to these images. As suggested, I would upgrade to 2012 and then the images will be separate files within a media folder. 1. Re: [FTM-TECH] FTM 2012 People/Family Index

    3. I only have 2300+ individuals but am not experiencing any problems with the index. As to the suggestion of changing the automatic syncing - it should not have any influence on the index. Although I use the manual option, I did change to automatic and had no problems with the index. Just to check, I am using build 388. Can you check Help, About FTM and look at the last three digits of the FTM version number to ensure it is 388. Just to check, could you see if you change the sync option to automatic to see if the problem reoccurs? The only differences between the automatic and manual options are Automatic Syncs when the file is opened. Syncs when the file is closed. Syncs when you click Sync Now. Manual Syncs when you click Sync Now. BJ On 10/12/2011 8:10 AM, Tom Herson wrote: > BJ, > > I have 10,312 individuals in the database, the same number that I had in FTM > 2011.
