I have the new FTM 2012 with a rather large database of 67,504 individuals and file size of 151,725 KB after compacting. Almost every time I make a change in my database the index rebuilds and sometimes it gets hung up showing the index in the background with the rebuilding symbol in front. I seem to be able to work while the file is hung up, but I don't think I can search the file while it is shuffling. Is there anything I can do to stop the shuffling without shutting FTM down and starting all over? This new FTM 2012 seems quicker in some ways like shutting down and moving from one individual to another but the file gets hung up more often. When I open it, it still takes close to five minutes for the file to rebuild. Any suggestions or help? Susan -- --- Susan C. Hi Desmond, The Description field for a place name might be the name of a church, school, hospital, address (12345 Mina Street) - in short any information that provides more information about the specific location for the event. If you did the same as many of us did, you may have put that information prior to the town, county and state information, but the way the Place Name Authority works, it requires that only the town or city, county, state and country are in the Place Field and any other information in the Description field (except of course a date which would go into the date field!). This is so it can properly map out the locations in your database. It is a good idea to do these on an individual basis, as you have decided to do. Since this is your first experience with the new FTM version, you might be interested to know that there is the Companion Guide available from the Help menu which is an extensive guide explaining many of the features of FTM. It's in PDF format and can be saved to your computer or even printed out if you prefer. There are also Tutorials available from the Help menu as well. Enjoy working with FTM 2012 and of course any questions you have can be asked here on the list! Desmond, The Place name is to use the map and the Place Name Authority. Normally that is a City/Town, County, State, and County The Description can be used for things like Cemetery Name Church Name Street Address Does that help? ___________________________ Russ Mailto:rworthington@att.net ________________________________ From: Desmond McDowell <desmond.mcdowell@rogers.com> To: ftm-tech@rootsweb.com Sent: Sat, October 22, 2011 11:41:05 AM Subject: [FTM-TECH] Just Loaded 2012 My question: the "Description" field below the place name field, what is this for.?

BJ...I have the same experience as you in 2012 and 2011 regarding the ability to drag and drop media items in the side panel of the Family work area. In the Family work area, side panel, media view, ALL media items (photos, census etc) for that person are shown and there is no ability to move them, either by dragging or by an arrow. In the Person view, bottom panel, media tab, only those media items attached to the person are shown. Not the media items attached to facts. You can change the position of the media items in the Person work area, media tab by using the arrows. That helps but it sure isn't as user friendly as drag and drop. Thank you so much, Courtney. Because I've always used drag and drop, I'd forgotten those arrows were there. They perform the same function so I'm a happy camper :-) I have the same experience as you when I try to drag and drop, so I don't think the loss of this function was intentional. Now this is very interesting. I'm running FTM 2012 build 388 on a Windows Pro machine 32-bit. I go to the Family work area and click on the Media tab in the right pane. I have multiple media items. I click on an image and start to drag it. I am shown a Pop-up window with the word, "Move" and an arrow pointing to the left. I continue to drag it and drop it at another location. Nothing happens. The Media item remains in its original location. There are no other arrows indicating I can rearrange the media items. The same thing happens if I go to the Person work area and attempt to move an image for a fact or for the Person. When I go to the Media work area, I click on a media item and attempt to drag it to a new location, I get the media item to move BUT there is a red circle with a diagonal line show just below the drag image. When I drop the image its position has not been affected. I go to FTM 2011. The Family and Person Media areas show the same thing as in FTM 2012 but the media item is relocated to the dropped location. I cannot find any arrows to rearrange the media items. Either I'm not seeing the same thing as you or there is some difference in my setup and operation of FTM 2011 and FTM 2012. Courtney, I observed the same thing also although since I do not really add media to my file, had not noticed the arrows. In FTM 2011, dragging can be done as well as using the arrows. But in FTM 2012, not only does it not allow you to drag the photos, sometimes I would get messages of "This person is already linked to the media item" when attempting to drag the media. I think dragging the media is easier than using the arrows if there are many media items, but at least the arrows are available to achieve the same purpose. After you have sorted your children (and the Data Errors Report) can find all instances of children out of birth order), you can turn the blended view back on again. Depending on how you have arranged your spouses and preferred spouse (where there is multiple marriages), the children in the blended view (remember it is a view), may not appear sorted where in fact they are and will reproduce correctly in charts and reports. Tom, I already use a consistent formula to name my images: <Last Name, First Name, Year, Event> but that doesn't necessarily mean they sort how I want them to sort. For example, each census image is named for the head of household. A person may appear in several different households in the course of a lifetime and the alphabetical order of the heads of household may not be the same as the chronological order of the censuses. We shouldn't have to start fiddling around with file names or captions to sort media when we were able to sort them easily by dragging and dropping in FTM 2010 and FTM 2011. I have far too many media to even contemplate renaming / recaptioning. In any case, some media, such as censuses, are attached to several people and renaming which works for one person will not necessarily work for another. Rather than submit an enhancement request, I would urge people to submit a bug report that this feature, which worked in the two previous versions of the program, has now been broken. This change to the way things worked in 2011 is really annoying. Definitely a retrograde step. I don't see why syncing media with Ancestry should affect the ability to sort the display of media in FTM itself. Caroline Gurney http://www.carosfamily.com http://cmgurney.blogspot.com
