I have an 11th cousin – OK quit laughing folks – who has a presence on Ancestry.com with a tree of over 8,000 folks and a multitude of media items. While she is a Mac user at heart, but owns a Windows PC notebook and FTM 2010. Her notebook is 2 years old and moderately low powered, but with 3 MB of RAM and Windows 7 Professional 64 bit – and here *I* thought one HAD to have 4 MB of RAM to get 64 bit mode to work. What we want to do is download the entire collection of names/dates/places/relationships/notes/sources/etc and also all of the media, still associated with the correct individual. Suggestions on how to do what she needs would be welcomed. FTM 16 fits in because with a low powered notebook, using FTM 2010 or FTM 2012 might not be an acceptable option for this “visual” person. My thought would be to port the entire tree over to FTM 16 to get her the speed she desires. Thanks for any and all help. John Okerson Memphis, TN

This is a strange question but I have no idea and thought you all would be my best resource for correct information. It involves uploading trees. How often should we upload a new tree OR is there a way to simply upload the additions, edits, etc.? I understand that I can make changes to my tree in FTM but I also upload it to Ancestry. I don't have the extra time to make changes in two places, one online and one on my desktop. I don't care to have several trees online so what I've been doing is deleting my old tree and then uploading a new tree. I wondered if uploading a new tree using the same name would overwrite an existing tree. I guess you can deduce I'm still fairly new at this online tree stuff, but so many of my relatives have found the info so helpful, I hate not to keep the most up to date info available to them. Thanks for any input anyone can offer. Sue Martin Pollock Researching Pollock, Martin, Roberson, Hooker, Holt, Teague, Waters and a host of other names
I haven't checked recently, but at one time I was able to upload trees with the same name. So your only recourse is to upload a new tree and delete the old one something too many neglect to do. Of course there is a new alternative which may fit your needs. FTM 2012 now allows the user to upload and link their file as a new tree. The benefit is it does what you want by uploading changes you make to your file. So it keeps the two trees in sync not identical but the basic information, sources and media are coordinated. You need to experiment with it to see if it fits your needs. It also downloads any changes made to the online tree into your PC file. Some like this while others don't care for it. You can control who makes changes to your online tree so it isn't too bad. Hope this helps. Unfortunately you have stumbled upon one of the foibles of syncing. Currently there is no way to reestablish a link between the two trees once it has been severed. I would suggest you bite the bullet and upload the tree a second time. As you correctly surmise you will need to reissue your invitations which while may be a bit embarrassing at least gets you to going again. Besides accepting an invitation isn't to hard to do. You also need to delete the old AMT tree. Since the link is severed, you have to do that online using the AMT's Manage Tree feature. I'm faced with the same problem but for a different reason. While I don't like it, I suspect it is simply too difficult to reestablish the sync because the program has no way to guarantee the two trees contain the same data. It is easier to upload afresh than to try to compare the two trees asking the the owner to confirm all differences between them. I'm sure that isn't the answer you wanted. I send a message to tech support over the weekend about this but they still haven't responded, so I figured I might try here and see if you folks have some ideas. Recently I was cleaning up some other tree files I've been working with and in the process I have my main tree running on the system. When I selected a different tree from the "Plan" tab and deleted it, after a short while FTM2012 crashed. When I restarted the program the tree I had selected was successfully deleted, but my main tree was no longer synced with Ancestry.com for some reason. I would like to resync those trees back up. The only methods I can think of would be to either download the Ancestry tree to sync as a new tree in FTM2012 (which I believe will lose some of my custom source information and will definitely lose all of my event notes) or I can just upload the tree again to Ancestry, but then I have to resend all of the invites again to the online tree (very annoying not just for me, but for everyone I already sent the invite to less than a month ago telling them it would be the last time I would need to annoy them with a friggin' invite!) Neither of those options is particularly appealing to me. I did try to do an upload and sync to a tree with the exact same name as my online tree, but instead of syncing to the online tree it just errors out (presumably because it couldn't create a tree with the name of an already existing one.) Does anyone else happen to have any ideas I might try? Ive got some updates I'm getting desperate to get uploaded. (And am I going to have to deal with this every time FTM2012 crashes?) Hi BJ 1 - see Step 2 below 2 - Opens in the same window 3 - Yep looks ok - as per last message to David - C:\Users\DARYL\Documents\Family Tree Maker\File name Daryl in Oz -----Original Message----- From: ftm-tech-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ftm-tech-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of BJ Sent: Wednesday, 26 October 2011 12:26 PM To: ftm-tech@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [FTM-TECH] Open tree in New Window - FTM2012 1 - OK, you can eventually get both files open each in its own window. If you close BRG first and then close Strays last; what happens if you reopen FTM? It should open Strays. Can you then open BRG in a new window? 2 - Another question. With BRG open, what happens if you double click on Strays? Does it open in the same window without problems or do you get a message about the file not being found? 3 - Finally when you hover the cursor over the Strays entry in the Trees pane, what path do you see in the pop-up dialog box? Does it look correct? BJ On 10/25/2011 5:43 PM, Daryl Rickards wrote: > Hi again - I still don't have lift off...... Seems to be confusing just saying where they are at. click on People at the top click Person tab - at the bottom is the persons media click on Shared Facts with ----- Click on Marriage Fact - on the right side, it shows the media from the Sources ( wedding certificate, marriage announcement) At the top, click on the Relationships tab click on the Spouses name On the right side, click on the small Media tab below the spouses name below there is the Marriage Media (wedding pictures) I don't think it technically makes a difference where they are at, but I really have no idea. OK Thanks, I missed your Step 2. I'm fresh out of ideas about this problem. B On 10/25/2011 6:58 PM, Daryl Rickards wrote: > Hi BJ > 1 - see Step 2 below > 2 - Opens in the same window > 3 - Yep looks ok - as per last message to David - > C:\Users\DARYL\Documents\Family Tree Maker\File name >
OK, you can eventually get both files open each in its own window. If you close BRG first and then close Strays last; what happens if you reopen FTM? It should open Strays. Can you then open BRG in a new window? Another question. With BRG open, what happens if you double click on Strays? Does it open in the same window without problems or do you get a message about the file not being found? Finally when you hover the cursor over the Strays entry in the Trees pane, what path do you see in the pop-up dialog box? Does it look correct? I shall explain the process I am using, hoping the issue will be clearer - I have two files named BRG and Strays I hope this not too "long winded" and the format is not lost Step 1 - Open FTM2012 from Task Bar File BRG opens Right Click (RC) Strays file in right hand panel - open in new Window FTM initialize banner - panel "Tree does not exist" - click ok New Tree Window appears - RC Strays in right hand panel "open Tree" (not open tree in new window) Strays file opens ok - I now have both BRG & Strays open Step 2 - Close trees (file exit) 1st BRG 2nd Strays Open FTM2012 from Task Bar File STRAYS opens (last one closed above) RC BRG in right hand panel open tree in new window BRG opens ok - - I now have both BRG & Strays open Step 3 - Close trees (file exit) 1st STRAYS 2nd BRG Open FTM2012 from Task Bar File BRG opens (Last one closed) Right Click (RC) Strays file in right hand panel - open in new Window FTM initialize banner - panel "Tree does not exist" - click ok New Tree Window appears - RC Strays in right hand panel "open Tree" (not open tree in new window) Strays file opens ok - I now have both BRG & Strays open So the process at Step 1 repeats itself Step 5 - Compact STRAYS file (reduced by 28%) - Close trees (file exit) 1st STRAYS 2nd BRG Step 6 - Open FTM2012 from Task Bar File STRAYS opens (now this is odd because I would have expected BRG, the last file to be closed) Back to step 2 results Step 7 - Close Trees 1st Strays 2nd BRG Open FTM2012 from Task Bar BRG opens (as expected) RC STRAYS (open in new window) Back to Step 1 - Problem repeats itself. Hi BJ, Yes that's exactly how I am opening the 2nd file - I'm running FTM 2012 build 388 under Windows 7 Home Premium on a 64-bit machine 8gb Very odd Daryl from Oz -----Original Message----- From: ftm-tech-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ftm-tech-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of BJ Sent: Tuesday, 25 October 2011 9:42 AM To: ftm-tech@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [FTM-TECH] Open tree in New Window - FTM2012 I'm sorry but I'm not experiencing this problem. I have a file open. On the Plan work area, I select a second file and select in a New Window. I see the program initialization dialog window. Eventually, a new FTM 2012 window opens showing the desired file. Is this how you are attempting to open the second file? If you are attempting to open by double clicking on the file name, you may have a problem. I had to reinstall FTM 2011 after I had installed FTM 2012. This caused the Windows file to be associated with FTM 2011. So when I attempt to open a FTM 2012 file, FTM 2011 is opened but doesn't recognize the file. So it offers to create a new tree. I'm running FTM 2012 build 388 under Windows 7 Pro on a 32-bit machine. Courtney, What would be an example of marriage media? AND does that media need to be added in the marriage panel (the window that pops up when you click on the marriage bar). Adding a media item to the marriage fact does not add it to the 'marriage/relationship media'. For example, I have marriage certificates added as media items to the marriage fact, but on the marriage page, there are no marriage (relationship) media items. They are just attached to the source. Hope my question is clear!
