I have many folks like John Okerson, Sr., John Okerson, Jr., John Okerson, 2nd, John Okerson, II within my tree from FTM 16. I imported them using the .ftw that FTM 16 uses. When imported into FTM 2012 build 388, I see them listed a Okerson, Sr. John in the Index using People view, Family. A name like John Okerson, 2nd appears as Okerson, 2nd John in the People view, Family Index and 2nd John Okerson in the rightmost column in the People view, Person. I have a multitude of Military Titles within the file too, and they appear in a similar way. Is this the way it is supposed to be????? I have the Index sort done using Family, Given Name if that matters.
John, No, it should appear as Okerson, John 2nd. When you have one of these in view, go to the Right Hand Panel I the Family View and click in the name field. A little pencil icon will appear. Click on that and you can then put 2nd in the Suffix field where it belongs. Another option would be to use slashes ( / ) as used in FTM 16 but if you do that then later need to make a change to the name, it might revert. In my database I have several people listed by the naming pattern here in Costa Rica in which two surnames are used (paternal & maternal). Unless I use the slashes or the click on the pencil, the first surname is treated as a Given name and the last as the surname which is incorrect. If I use the slashes and later click in that name field, it will revert, so I found that using the pencil icon is the best way. Did these names display correctly in the Index in FTM 16? If I chose........is it ok to delete the family files that are not labeled "synced with Family Tree Maker?" (within ancestry.com) TreeSync™ does not appear to overwrite a file even if you give it the identical name. Thus, be careful as you select the file to delete on Ancestry.com. I uploaded a file of the identical name, copied some descriptive text I used, deleted the older file, then pasted the copied text to my new file. Worked fine! Yes, I did the deletion within Ancestry.com itself. John Okerson from Memphis, TN
I recently "Synced" two separate files into Ancestry.com. The operation did not over-right the existing files in ancestry. If I chose........is it ok to delete the family files that are not labeled "synced with Family Tree Maker?" (within ancestry.com) Thank you, Rick
Yes. The sync does not over write existing AMT trees and Ancestry.com is quite happy to have two AMT trees with the same name. You simply need to go online, determine which AMT is not synced and delete it. BJ On 10/30/2011 5:59 PM, Rick Mayernik wrote: > I recently "Synced" two separate files into Ancestry.com. BJ, thank you for pointing out the enhancements. Much appreciated. Ali ----- Original Message ----- From: BJ To: ftm-tech@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, October 25, 2011 12:53 AM Subject: Re: [FTM-TECH] So far so good The sync is the main enhancement in FTM 2012. There are a couple of other relatively minor enhancements. 1. Anyone who has children from multiple marriages, the user has the option to show just the children of each marriage or to show a "blended" view listing all children of all marriages. It is a small icon on the People, Family work area. It looks something like # just above the children. It toggles off and on. 2. The Descendant chart now allows the user to show all descendants of an individual or to show the descendants down to a specified individual. On the Publish, Descendant Chart it is an option in the right pane labeled "Descendants" with a drop down arrow. Clicking the arrow displays a list of eligible descendants of the focus individual. 3. The Outline Descendant Report has also been changed but I don't recall how. If you click Help, Help for Family Tree Maker, there is an article of "Whats New in FTM". Hope that answers your question. BJ, I am positive that 2011 will download an AMT file into FTM including images, and I think 2010 would also. The problem is how does one get the data AND images from the AMT into a file she can use. Downloading the AMT into FTM 2010 will not work because it will not download the images. The only program which will download the AMT and images is FTM 2012. Once you've done that what options does she have? Forget about trying to convert the tree into FTM 16, the only way of doing that is to export the data file to GEDCOM and that will automatically lose the images. So she would have to manually add all of the images into the appropriate scrapbook in FTM 16. You can use FTM 2012 to convert the file to FTM 2010. Unfortunately I don't have FTM 2010 installed so I haven't tested how successful that conversion is. I suspect that FTM 2010 will run slower and have more problems on her machine than FTM 2012. I have noticed some improvement in speed and performance in FTM 2012 so I think it would be better to have her migrate to FTM 2012 but you may want to run some tests using her machine. *Is it legal *for you to access her AMT and download it. Sure why not? Only the owner can download a tree. She has given you her ID and password. If you use them and download the tree, you can then give the file to her. I see no problems with that. I have two Ancestry.com IDs and Passwords and am able to switch between them with no problems. You simply Log out of your ID and Login with hers. * Will it work?* Yes, using FTM 2012 you have two choices. You can either download the AMT as a synced file or as an unlinked file. I suggest you do it as a UNLINKED file. Otherwise the tree will be synced to your machine and will have to be unlinked at a later time. The main question is *How well will it work?* That depends upon how she has managed the AMT and its images. Factors which will make the download easier are 1. Make sure that all of the AMT media items have assigned "Picture Names". This is the name displayed below the image thumbnail in the AMT Media Gallery. The Picture Name is downloaded as the Thumbnail's Caption and it is used as the Media file name. If there are no Picture Names assigned, a generic file name is assigned and may not be names she wants to use. 2. Make sure that all of the AMT media items are linked to an individuals; otherwise, you or she will have to go into FTM 2012 and link the media items to the appropriate person. In the AMT Media Gallery, click on the media image, this will open the detail view for the media item. On the right side of the view, you can see to whom the picture is linked. Hope this helps somewhat. BJ On 10/29/2011 7:25 AM, John Okerson wrote: > I left it vague intentionally. If you are using FTM 2011 for example, maybe once a month or if you have done some significant edits. You have to upload as a new tree. A plea. Please delete your old tree. The AMT is full of obsolete trees where folk have uploaded a new one, but have left the old one there which simply results in additional and unnecessary leaf hints'' If you are using FTM 2012 and plan to use TreeSync, then if you choose automatic sync the tree will sync on loading and closing down or of course you can sync at any time. I understand that I can make changes to my tree in FTM but I also upload it to Ancestry. I don't have the extra time to make changes in two places, one online and one on my desktop. I don't care to have several trees online so what I've been doing is deleting my old tree and then uploading a new tree. I wondered if uploading a new tree using the same name would overwrite an existing tree. I'm not sure I understand your question. When you say "I rename a file copy...", are you talking about the backup or are you saying you make a copy of your data file which you then rename to "Jones_30Oct11"? The other question is "This time it failed to move Scrapbook images." In FTM 16, Scrapbook images are embedded in the file. There is no "movement". The scrapbooks are automatically "copied" when you make a copy of the file. I would check the original file to ensure the scrapbook images are present there. I really had not known that one could use less than 4 GB and still have 64 bit mode, but suppose it must be so. The question for my cousin is whether or not she will perceive the program to be fast enough. Very difficult to know in advance and she lives several hundred miles away, so an afternoon's visit is not too likely either. > Your message is a bit ambiguous in that I am not sure if you want to download a file from Ancestry.com c/w media or from her FTM 2010? I left it vague intentionally. What I suspect may have to happen is to go to Ancestry.com with her username and password via FTM 2012. Then download her entire tree and media files. Next, convert it to FTM 2010 format and load same on her notebook PC. My questions include 1) would it be legal for me to do the above, 2) do we believe it would work, 3) would I be able to export the file to FTM 16. I do not have 2010, nor 2011, but do have 16, 2009 and 2012 (build 388). > In terms of FTM 2010 a File >Backup with the included media items check > box ticked will also capture all the information And that would most likely work IF she had done her work from FTM and then sent it to Ancestry.com. Instead, this lady did her work on Ancestry.com and has downloaded a .GED file. She also has all of the media she has uploaded to Ancestry.com on one of her computers (of at least 3). While it would be possible to add the media locally, after importing the .GED file into FTM 2010, it seems considerable effort if the 2012 download/convert plan were to work. Having her buy the FTM 2012 upgrade would sure help her maintain the names/dates/places as well as the media, using TreeSync.
John - don't worry. I always delete the old tree. I have relatives that have five and six trees that are so old, outdated, full of incorrect information, but they refuse to delete them for some odd reason. Thanks for your input; at least I know I'm on the right track and doing it correctly. If you choose manual it is up to you to press the sync now button John D Sent: Saturday, 29 October 2011 1:49 AM Subject: [FTM-TECH] Online Tree Updates This is a strange question but I have no idea and thought you all would be my best resource for correct information. It involves uploading trees. How often should we upload a new tree OR is there a way to simply upload the additions, edits, etc.? I understand that I can make changes to my tree in FTM but I also upload it to Ancestry. I don't have the extra time to make changes in two places, one online and one on my desktop. I don't care to have several trees online so what I've been doing is deleting my old tree and then uploading a new tree. I wondered if uploading a new tree using the same name would overwrite an existing tree. I guess you can deduce I'm still fairly new at this online tree stuff, but so many of my relatives have found the info so helpful, I hate not to keep the most up to date info available to them. ********************************** List information page http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Software/FTM-TECH.html Online Support for Family Tree Maker Version 16 and earlier http://pastftm.custhelp.com/ Version 2008 - 2011 http://ftm.custhelp.com/ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to FTM-TECH-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
FTM v16 Every few months after backup, I rename a file copy with current date i.e. "Jones_30Oct11". This time it failed to move Scrapbook images. What did I overlook? Tnx! -- HAVEANICEDAY Bernard I. Kouchel kooshb9341@bellsouth.net
