    3. BJ Yes, it does help, it helps a great deal. I suppose what confuses me is the complaints of problems once the trees are sync'd. I've gone over and over my tree on my PC in order to make the transition to AMT as flawless as it can be. Preferred facts as well as alternate facts will be synced. They tend to be easily viewed in FTM but are rather obscure in the AMT. The thing to remember about the sync feature is the term "sync". This does not mean the two trees are identical and a perfect substitution for the other. They are different. The data base structures are different and there are differences between the information in the two trees. Examples are. The PC file has Research notes, tasks, reports and charts - none of these are in the AMT. In the PC file you have a "Relationship" record which allows you to link pictures and sources. The AMT does not support these links to pictures and sources. It simply points to children. "Sync" simply means Keeping the data or information the same in both trees. For an individual, all facts listed for that individual on the Person Facts work area are found in the AMT. Hope that helps. 3. > I'm interested in your details on how to get your tree in 'condition'. I create a GEDCOM, then compress it using 7-Zip. I upload the .zip file to WorldConnect, aka Rootsweb. There I have a filter set to remove notes, sources and about 8 other GEDCOM tags. Living people's information is removed and for me, that includes anyone born after 1898 for whom I do not have some death information. By enabling Gedcom User Full download, temporarily, I can download a 4 M file that started off at about 50 M. The resulting file I upload to Ancestry.com. I could give more detailed tag filter instruction IF you wish. A list is available at wiki-en.genealogy.net/GEDCOM-Tags if you need it. Does this help or hinder? John Okerson Memphis, TN

    3. John Not so much pretty but convenient for me. I remember what happened a few versions ago when some facts were moved around and made no sense whatsoever when upgraded to the next version. 3. I think many of the complaints stem from users not understanding the function of the sync process. They are expecting the trees to be duplicates of each other. As for differences in media items, the AMT does not support relationship images. What it does is - upload the media item and links it to the two individuals. The other area has to do with the images obtained from Ancestry.com data bases. Examples of these images are Census images, Texas Death/Birth/Marriage Index images, World War I and II Draft Registration Card images and some others. These images should not be uploaded to the ATM. They remain in the PC file but not in the AMT. The reason - the AMT links directly to the records and their images. So it is not necessary for a copy to be in the Media Gallery. I have found some problems with this in that some images are uploaded while others are not. No real reason for the different way they are handled. Another common complaint is the fact that the links are between one tree and one computer. If that link ever breaks, there is no way to repair it. The user must start all over. 3. I approach this question from a different direction. Newspaper items are not facts, they are sources that contain facts. I create fact names based on the information in the article (if necessary), then use the newspaper article as the source. For example I have an article announcing that my grandmother was named salutatorian of her HS graduating class. I created a fact name called Honors, entered the date, place and put the type of honor in the description. Then I used the newspaper article as the source. Another article tells that my great-grandmother was elected president of the ladies auxiliary of the Grange. I made a fact name Leadership. Many fact names can be extracted from a wedding notice: name of church, name of officiant, names of witnesses, etc. all with the article as the single source. In the case of my grandmother above, if I had more than one honor to record for her, we would be back to your original question with two facts named Honors. But you still would have greatly reduced the number of instances of this problem, and would be using the database in a way that could prove to be more productive for you in the end, particularly if you wish to print a bibliography. Where you do end up with multiple uses of a fact name, you could make some of your alternate facts private. Then when you create your report you can exclude private facts and use the Facts to Include dialog box to create exactly the report you want. 3. There is no way to mark more than one Fact label as the Preferred fact. On most reports there is a way to print all entries of a fact label without printing all fact labels for every fact. Let me use an example. I enter multiple Census records. One is marked as the Preferred Census. I want to generate a report showing all entries of the Census but not for any other fact. I'll use the Custom Report to illustrate. 1. Click Publish, Person Reports, Custom Report. 2. Specify the individuals to be included in the report 3. Click the icon for Items to include. 4. Remove the check marks for the notes. 5. Ensure the option at the top, "Include only Preferred Facts" has a check mark. 6. In the left pane, use the list of facts to include the facts you want. In my case, I added the Census fact. 7. Highlight each fact in the list of facts to be included and click on the box *"Fact" Options* 8. I review each fact ensuring the Fact option to "include only Preferred Fact" is checked. 9. I review the Census fact's Options but ensure its "Include only Preferred Fact" is NOT checked. 10. Click OK and generate the report. You should have a report which lists all the census items but only the Preferred fact for everything else. Hope that helps. I have been busy editing my 16 file using the Place Name Authority within 2012. By a variety of methods, I have whittled my list of 'places' from about 30,000 when I started to only 21,5XX at this point. I still have quite a ways to go before I am willing to toss in the towel and resolve the remaining mass of places - might have said MESS of places, but thought better of it. The PNA in 2012 seems quite useful, though imperfect. It has allowed me to find a multitude of errors I made, and many that others passed along to me. Sadly, I had chosen the same / as a divider between county names, when a city appears in multiple counties. I have worked on replacing that / with \ instead and am happy with the results although the PNA disavows the name that way.

    3. I would like to have either of these versions report the number of people from each County, State, Country combination within my database, or alternatively City, County, State, Country where identical places are used. My desire is to obtain a report of 75 folks in Shelby County, Tennessee, USA, 5 in Shelby County, Missouri, USA and so forth. Including the people's names is NOT desired as I have over 130,000 people involved. I would like to be able to have FTM take the number of folks, place it within a map of the country or state, individually selectable, and produce a graphical map of any state, showing each county, its name and the number of folks from there. I am indifferent as to whether the report shows birth location, death location or marriage location, but being able to select which Fact is used would be nice to have IMHO.
