Are you talking about the Ancestry Android Beta App, or looking at Ancestry.com as a web site? My comment was directed at trying to view my tree as a web site. I agree the Beta App is fantastic. > I'm not complaining about the app, I'm just curious what the advantahe is. > So far, no one has pointed anything out. An app like the Android one allows someone with phone service to connect to the Internet, and thus to their tree. One could enter a url for Ancestry.com and navigate to one's tree there, but the app seems a simpler way to get there IMHO. Better? I am a notebook PC user who usually treads in spots where Ethernet or WiFi connections are available. I see little use for me, but can foresee it for those who are not so inclined. Pat, As I recall, this happens when you open a Back-up file. When you open any Back-up file, FTM will offer you the opportunity to rename the file but if you do not then it will come up with these unusual names like the one you now have for your file. You can just browse to the file in Explorer and rename the file. Then open FTM 2006. If it was the last opened file before closing the program, FTM will likely say that it cannot locate the file. Click to browse for the file and open it. If it was not the last file open in FTM, then just go to File and then click on Open, browse to the newly named file and click to Open. I just tried it and it works just fine. Tom, Your welcome! Happy to be of help. I think that the value is having the ability to view and even edit your online AMT when away from home on a research trip or even when visiting relatives and you happen to find out some information about an ancestor. I know that the iDevice App allows editing so I would assume that they intend to include that as well for the Android. In any event, I can say that I would just be happy to be able to view my tree when I am at a library or other location where I conduct research. In the past I have taken a copy of the Index to my tree but that has very limited uses when you cannot see the family relationships. This tool would allow that ability and that to me could be quite useful.... if I ever were to get any type of Smart phone. :) Hopefully sometime. Once more functionality is added to the app it will be useful to any FTM 2012 users who are using the sync feature and have an Android. Make a change in your AMT from your tablet or phone and then when you open FTM, you can sync those changes to your FTM file. Tom, Since it's a Beta version, most likely not all functionality has been added to the App. I would suggest providing your observations as feedback to Ancestry. Here is an address that seems to be the one where comments, etc., can be sent androidteam@ancestry.com. So it's not really what I'm looking for, A big problem is the size of the text in the Family and Info boxes, especially the description field. Most Android apps allow enlargin text, etc. by putting two fingers on the screen and moving them apart to enlarge and moving them together to decrease the size of the things on the screen. Not using this feature is a REAL problem, especially with the miniscule size of the text. If Notes and Sources are available, I didn't see how to get at them. Thank you, BJ, for this clarification. Eastman certainly did NOT write up his article in a way that sufficiently explained the issue behind this decision. According to a Social Security Administration fact sheet this is the change and the reason for the change. *Q: What change is SSA making to the Public DMF?* *A: *We began disclosing certain state records on the Public DMF in 2002.**After review of the Public DMF, we have determined that we can no longer disclose protected State records. Section 205(r) of the Social Security Act prohibits SSA from disclosing State death records we receive through our contracts with the States, except in limited circumstances. Therefore, we cannot legally share those State records on the Public DMF. (Section 205r link - http://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/ssact/title02/0205.htm) *Q: When will this change be effective?* *A:*November 1, 2011. *Q: How will this change affect the size of the Public DMF?* *A:*In 2010, we shared approximately 2.8 million death records, including updates or changes, on the Public DMF. We expect that yearly number to decrease by approximately 1 million. In addition, our historical Public DMF contains 89 million records. We expect that number to decrease by approximately 4.2 million records. You can find this fact sheet at http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/286 At the bottom is a link to the fact sheet. You need to open the fact sheet using word or in my case Open Office. As you can see, it does not have any issues with the accuracy of the data but with privacy laws of the various states regarding release of birth and death information. I would also note that according to the fact sheet the DMF is published as an Annual compiling or as a Historical compiling. I suspect that most companies purchase the Annual compiling and simply update their data base with the new additions. If that is so, there is nothing requiring them to remove the 4.2 million records from their data base. On the other hand if a company loses their historical records and the purchases the SSA's Historical data base, those records would not be in the latest complete copy. Just talked to Family Tree Maker. Tried all techs suggestion. Still would not work. Some of the other techs were able to duplicate the problem. A trouble report to developers has been submitted.

Tom With 2011, the index operation was changed and improved When the index loads it first sorts the names in alpha Then, and this is the new and useful bit, it sorts the same names in DOB order. That is what is happening when you see the whirling icon. The benefit is that if you have [say] 10 people all with the name Tom Smith they will be sorted in DOB order. So yes, there is a slight delay to run the second sort, but the index list is much better for the two-level sort John D -----Original Message----- From: ftm-tech-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ftm-tech-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of TH Sent: Monday, 7 November 2011 1:19 AM To: ftm-tech@rootsweb.com Subject: [FTM-TECH] Another Odd Connection to the Index I don't know if this particular instance has been mentioned, but I was just working with the Manage Facts option and when I had finished making changes, the index blanked out for a short time, the whirling icon appeared and then the index returned. I'm hoping that someone who has a real connection to Ancestry.com is reporting these things to Ancestry so that something can be done about it. I should mention that I have Synce set to manual.
