Actually I was trying to point to the Media in the second line. Interestingly, I just tried it again and the Paste option is dimmed. I'm not sure what is going on. I can paste the image in the clipboard into an email message so I know it is there. BJ On 11/30/2011 7:13 PM, John Okerson wrote: > I mean you click the Media option in the tool bar. 1. I click the right mouse button Copy and other options are available but Paste is dimmed. 2. I click Ctrl+V and nothing happens. 3. I click Edit and Paste and Ctrl+V are dimmed. I am with you to here! 4. I click Media and Paste is dark. When I click paste I get the dialog box for assigning categories to the media item. I assign a media category, tell FTM 2012 to copy the media item to the media folder and link to it there. The media item is inserted. You say you click Media and it seems that Paste becomes dark at that point. Just what aspect or portion of Media do you click? I tried clicking within the white space and away from other media items, I tried clicking on the word Media, but nothing *I* tried got your result 2. In the Collection work area, I scroll to the end of the list and click on some white space; i.e. no media item is selected. 1. I click the right mouse button but this time all items are dimmed. 2. I click Ctrl+V and nothing happens. 3. I click Edit and Paste and Ctrl+V are dimmed. 4. I click Media and Paste is dark. When I click paste I get the dialog box for assigning categories to the media item. I assign a media category, tell FTM 2012 to copy the media item to the media folder and link to it there. The media item is inserted. I am not sure why different testers are experiencing different operations. I am running FTM 2012 under Windows 7 Pro. As I said, I don't normally use this technique. Rather I right click on the image in the browser and select Save As. This way I can select where the image is saved to and I can rename the image using a more meaningful name. Once I've saved the file, I go to FTM 2012 Media work area and Add Media item. I used to use the copy & paste a good bit within FTM 16 and REALLY want this feature to work for me (and Peter) here in 2012. Like BJ I am using Windows 7 Professional SP1, 64-bit mode here.
I mean you click the Media option in the tool bar. This is the list of options immediately below the list of work areas across the top of the window. E.g. Plan People Places Media Sources Publish Web Search <--(work areas) File Edit View Media Tools Help (second line are Menu items) | | This is the one to click. Right click the image you want in your browser and click Copy. Open the Media Tab in FTM and click in the Media Pane. Then either use the Media menu and click on paste or Ctrl+V. The dialog will open to assign a category and select whether the image is linked or copied to the Media Folder. In this case of course you would want to copy that media item to the media folder. Click OK and then the image will appear in the Media Gallery. Select that media item and rename it if necessary and add a caption if you desire. If need be, I could save the media item with a file name and be done, but I HOPE for the old, simple, straightforward way. SKS? I don't normally use this technique but I've just tried it. Here is what I've done: 1. Using FireFox or IE 9.0, I've opened Ancestry.com and gone to a tree. I used the right mouse button to copy the image. 2. I've tested the image is in the clipboard by opening an email message and pasting the image there. 3. I opened FTM 2012 (tried it with FTM 2011 also). 4. Go to the Media work area. Where there there are two types of possibilities. 1. Clicking anywhere in the Collection, normally selects a media item in the collection. 1. I click the right mouse button Copy and other options are available but Paste is dimmed. 2. I click Ctrl+V and nothing happens. 3. I click Edit and Paste and Ctrl+V are dimmed. 4. I click Media and Paste is dark. When I click paste I get the dialog box for assigning categories to the media item. I assign a media category, tell FTM 2012 to copy the media item to the media folder and link to it there. John, I have done this three different times and every time it worked. After you have right clicked and copied the media, LEFT click in the center pane of the Media Collection Workspace. Then you can EITHER type Ctrl+V, Right click and click Paste Media or go to the Media Menu and click Paste Media. After you do that a dialog opens that allows you to select what categories the image should be assigned to and also if the image is to be copied to the Media Folder (in this case you need to do that) or to link to the image from another location. If you need it I will send you screen shots. As long as you can copy the image and make sure to left click in the Media Gallery BEFORE attempting to paste it should work. I right clicked on the image and 'Copy image' was chosen, as in previous versions. Then in 2012 with Media selected in the view section (of 7 choices), I am presented either Collection or Detail panes. I use Collection which shows all of my media. I bring my cursor into the center portion of the screen where the pictures are shown with their descriptive words (or filenames). Again using right click, the option for 'Paste media' is NOT shown in black. My speculation is that I am within the Media Gallery. Am I right? With Media View, I see Groups, then Listed by: All media. Under that comes All, Photos, Stories. At the bottom left of my screen I am in Groups, not History. I appreciate your efforts to help me drag myself into the modern version, but am pleased that another person has the same problem I am experiencing. Do you by any chance have the File, Privatize File turned on? I just tried with mine, and with it on I can no longer paste into the Media Collection area Sounds crazy, but even if you don't have the file set to privatize, maybe it thinks it is because of the Private dates in the file? After you have copied it into the clipboard, can you paste it into a photo editor such as IrfanView? Sorry but I can't test it right now. Woke up this morning and my right mouse button isn't working. The only way I have found to solve the problem is never, ever use the PNA as construed by FTM. Always put the way it is entered on the census. Those who aren't interested in the historical name for a community, will say you are making work for yourself. Those who look at census will see entries that have village, city, county state, they will also see Ancestry listings that have city but not village in index, or village, but not city in index or will have an ED listed but NO DESCRIPTION, in which case, it generally does NOT show up in the index.
