I have two relatives who are dyed in the wool Mac users, so I await your comments on the version 2 of the product, please. Of particular interest to me are 1) whether uploading & linking work well with good sized databases, 2) the perceived speed of the program, and 3) the performance when creating documents. Thanks in advance.
Thanks to John Yates for his review of FTM 2 for Mac. Think I'll wait. I'm quite content with Reunion. I'd like to make some comments on his "review" of FTM 2. 1) It's Standard Operating Proceedure for FTM to install a new release of software alongside of and not as a replacement for the previous version. This is viewed as a plus by most readers of the tech list. 2) I agree it would be nice if there was an install time option to ask the user if he/she would prefer to have the new software installed over or along side of whatever previous versions of FTM may exist on the machine. 3) John asks why keep the old program around if the new one will update the previous format of the family file(s) to new versions. Good Question. The answer as BJ and others have pointed out before is that if you copy your old files to a new directory and then do not access the copies with the new software you can run the old software on the old files. Why would you want to do this? Because if you're BJ or any of the other kind hearted souls on this list, you can then run the old software on your old files to help users on this list troubleshoot problems with old software. The other reason is that if you have relatives and/or research partners running the old software, you can keep your files and software completely compatible with what your relatives/partners are doing. 4) Running both programs from the OSX Dock is problematic, but could easily be solved were Ancestry to supply slightly different Icons to be loaded onto the Dock with each install. I'm sure there's a way to copy the icon and then modify the icon and get it to be on the dock, but my iMac skills are not at that level. jr Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants. ---Gen. John, What is described, is much like the behavior of the PC version. You keep the old version, until you are used to the new one. Then you, the user, can remove the old version. I think you will see that the ICON for FTMM-1 and FTMM--2 are different in the Application folder. For those that like knowing what to expect, which is not documented in the CD package they sent me, here are a few details: This install does not upgrade Family Tree Maker for Mac. It installs a completely separate program Family Tree Maker for Mac 2. It leaves the old program in place. Which means, if like me, you open the program via an icon in the dock, you open the old program after the install. It took me 10 seconds to figure this out, but I could have gone on forever not knowing this if I didn't think about it. So replace your FTM dock icon if you use one. A 14 day free trial is advertised on the CD packaging. After install, it did say if you already have an Ancestry subscription it would extend it for 14 days. However, it then proceeded to give me ONLY TWO choices, and both were to upgrade from US to World before continuing. I had to back out of it and gave up. It is either a bug, poorly written or simply deceptive. Since it is a new program, no tailored preferences survive the install. Nor is the list of recent files opened, which I do like to retain as I help dozens of people with their genealogy and easily forget which files I've worked on "recently". When you open a file, it warns you that it must upgrade its format, and from then on you cannot open it in the old version. Fair enough, so why keep the old program around? It would be better if it were a true upgrade, and one that preserved preferences, recently opened files, and whatever else I discover that it has lost. And a blanket "should I convert all files in your FTM directory?" would be nice. As to new features, or bugs, I don't have enough experience with it yet to know. But at least those ready to install it know what to expect as it is not described in the packaging.

Firstly I don't believe that there is a version of FTM called FTM 2002. FTM 2008 will run in Windows 7 Be aware that FTM 2008 was the first of the new rewrite and had a number of issues There were three service releases added to improve it, but it still had a number of issues. If you do install it, make sure that you go to Help>Check for Updates and install the service release Personally I would not install FTM 2008 but go to FTM 2012 which has about 150 enhancements over FTM 2008 Aftrer you install, update and register FTM 2008, Go to the Plan Workspace, Click on New tree rhen click on the radio button to import from an existing file. Navigate to where you have your "FTM 2002" file saved, it will end in .FTW, and follow the prompts John D -----Original Message----- From: ftm-tech-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ftm-tech-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Ellen Bisson Sent: Thursday, 15 December 2011 3:10 PM To: ftm-tech@rootsweb.com Subject: [FTM-TECH] Windows 7 I seem to have lost my very old, much loved FTM 2002 software in our recent move and now want to load something basic on my Windows 7 laptop. There are no particular problems The program will install like any well-behaved Mc program The disappointing thing is that it is much the same as the previous Mac version, eg FTM 2010 I does have TreeSync, Blended families, iPhoto support and the ability to view it in full screen on Mac OS Lion and that is about it over the previous FTM for Mac But it still doesn't have the 100 or so enhancements that FTM 2011 received Not running under Windows it will run a lot faster than the Windows version They haven't released the File Migration Utility for FTM 2012 as yet so if you are going from an FTM 2012 file, you will have to save it as FTm 2011 and then convert it, or uses GEDCOM It will read .FTW from FTM 16 or earlier John D -----Original Message----- From: ftm-tech-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ftm-tech-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of John Yates Sent: Thursday, 15 December 2011 11:14 AM To: ftm-tech@rootsweb.com Subject: [FTM-TECH] Family Tree Maker for Mac 2 My copy of Family Tree Maker for Mac 2 arrived today. Ellen, Do you remember what Version your (FTM2002) was? There wasn't a FTM2002. FTM2008 will read your FTW file(s) from Version 16 and earlier. Do you have your FTW file(s)? A few ways Use the Place Usage Report and use the selected individuals to engage the filter and then use the Filter to select a particular place Or Use the Custom report and again you will use selected individuals and again use the Filter in/Filter out to select your place of interest This of course works best if you have your places consistent The Place Name Authority is good for this although not essential All reports can be exported via Share as a CSV file that can be opened in Excel, Access or Word as you choose John D -----Original Message----- From: ftm-tech-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ftm-tech-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Pierre M Hahn Sent: Tuesday, 13 December 2011 3:24 PM To: ftm-tech@rootsweb.com Subject: [FTM-TECH] printout of one place listing I am looking to get a printout of all the people with their expanded listing of one particular place. My computer is 32 bit. I was supposed to give a class on "Publishing" on 12/14, but will have to postpone that subject to a later date when this problem is solved. I am going thru all the suggestions one by one to see if the answer is there. Thanks to all who responded, and I will post my findings. Well, the link between my computer tree and AMT tree has disappeared. Simple solution is to re-upload my computer (FTM) tree, but then I have to re-invite all of the family members to view the new tree. Second option is to keep the tree on Ancestry.com, and download from there to create a new tree on my computer. Does FTM 2012 Build 452 actually crash or do you receive a message that the report cannot be generated? I attempted to duplicate your problem by creating a new book. I added a title page, TOC, Descendant Chart for 4 generations and an Index. When I create the index, I receive a error message the report cannot be generated. I click OK processing continues. After another 10 minutes, I receive the message a second time. I click OK. The message closes but the index is displayed. I was able to add additional reports/charts but the error occurs when I try to generate the TOC and the Index. I have named a book, created a table of contents and generated a descendancy report (4 generations) for inclusion. When I try to add anything else, FTM crashes with the two fold message that (1) FTM has to close and (2)search internet for a solution. When I try the search for an internet solution, FTM automatically closes. I have cleared my cache, rebooted twice, compacted my file twice to 0%. Nothing seems to work.
