The combined family display is a new feature of FTM 2012. It displays all of the children of an individual across multiple spouses. To see it, go to the Family tab in the middle lower pane which shows the children of the current couple, you will see an icon which looks like lines crossing each other. Clicking that toggles the combined list of children on and off. You cannot sort the children by birth dates while the combined list is selected. As I recall the children will be displayed thusly. Children will be displayed as they are sorted within each family. Children of the selected family are displayed first, followed by the children of the other families. Would SKS tell me how to change a fact name in 2012?
The first thing to do is to click on the person you want to change. This displays the individual's preferred facts in the right pane which is also called the Information pane. If the fact is displayed in the right (information) pane, you can make the change in that pane. If it is not shown in the right pane, click the Person Tab. This changes to a work area similar to the FTM 16 Edit Individual dialog box. All of the facts for the focal individual are displayed and you can make any changes by selecting the fact and making the change in the right pane. The thing to watch out for is the removal of a fact from the list. If you want to remove a fact, you select the fact in the left pane. Just above the pane there is a Red X next to a Blue +. Clicking that Red X deletes the fact. PLEASE DO NOT CONFUSE it with the the icon of a person's head and delete in the top right corner. Clicking that icon DELETES THE INDIVIDUAL. You can use the Mini-Nav (partial pedigree chart at the top of the work area to navigate or change the focus to other individuals in the family. I hope that answers your question. I'm not sure whether this is what you are looking for or not. In FTM 16 and earlier, you could change the name of a fact label. You don't do that any more after FTM 2008. You can add new custom fact labels and you can remove those fact labels. There are certain "default" fact labels established in the program and you cannot remove those. For example, Caste cannot be removed from the list of fact labels available for use. Now if you have a series of facts which you want to change to another fact label, there are several ways of doing that. As an example, when FTM merges a census record into the data base, it always creates a Residence fact. I don't want to use that fact label but prefer to use Census. So here is the way you can do that. 1. Go to the People, Person work area for the individual whose fact you want to change. 2. Highlight the fact you want to change. In my instance, Residence. 3. Click the right mouse button and select *Fact Data Options*. 4. Elect to backup the file or not. 5. A dialog box opens for the selected fact label. 6. You can either perform the change for All individuals or Selected individuals. I normally use selected individuals. 7. You may have a list of facts for the individual/s. Check the one you want changed. 8. You have several options. Click Change selected facts to this fact type. 9. A list will open offering you the choice of fact labels available. In my case I select Census. 10. Click OK and the fact has change from Residence to Census. Hope this answers your question. I'm not sure the updated version of FTM 2012 is being sold in stores. If she buys FTM 2012, she will probably get the older version but it doesn't matter as the update is free. Once she installs FTM 2012, it should check for an update, download and install the latest release. While I can upload & link a small file and then sync either direction, my complex file seems to stop during the attempt to import it into Ancestry.com's file. I am still working with Tech Support on this issue, but ..... I would say that not being able to link and sync are CRUCIAL and CRITICAL. John

Yes, that's how it works. It requires a lot of testing and experimenting on your part to see how you want to handle this. One thing I did was remove all my parish register and census images from my FTM tree before I uploaded to a linked (syncronised) member tree on Ancestry. There are copyright issues with these; the parish register images from FamilySearch aren't to be published on another site and is just one example. Not everyone has gone to these lengths and it is up to the individual whether you feel comfortable with the copyrighted images out there. All-in-all, it's a good feature. There are still some teething problems but I haven't found anything that precludes me using the feature. > I think I'm going to do the same thing, use my FTM as my primary databse, > sounds easier. I have several friends who have an online tree with Ancestry.com from time before FTM 2012 was released. The dilemma they faced was how to deal with changes and additions made by other people of the Ancestry Tree if they had not incorporated each and every one of those changes or additions into their Family Tree Maker tree. The further the AT goes away from matching the FTMT the more difficult it would be, IMHO. Anyone care o jump in and share their experiences about this? One of the nice features of Ancestry.com and FTM 2012 - a tip of the hat to Russ for pointing it out to me - is that the owner of a file on Ancestry and with FTM 2012, one can go to the Plan workspace, New Tree, Download fro Ancestry and see trees you have online. If they are NOT linked, then you can DOWNLOAD said tree from Ancestry to your computer. As best I can tell, this downloads one's AT to the computer and it can become a FTMT. It is most likely NOT identical to one's FTMT that was already on the computer. If one downloads a .ftm with media, then one COULD cross check the media files from the AT to what your previously existing FTMT media file contains. I acknowledge that naming the newly downloaded FTMT has to be done with care and likewise, using multiple trees, especially with similar names and most of the people matching can be confusing.
