    3. Nivard, There are some things you can do that can prevent your FTM 2011 files from being automatically converted. Before installing, you can remove all of your FTM 2011 files from FTM 2011 in the Plan Workspace. Also before installing you can make a copy of your entire Family Tree Maker file and name it with a meaningful name. And lastly, when installing FTM 2012, after the installation is complete, do NOT launch the program, just close the dialog and then open FTM 2012 from the task bar or desktop icon. FTM 2012 will present you with a list of files it has found when you have opened it. Instead of clicking OK, click cancel, and you will be taken to the New Tree Tab where you can manually import whatever file you wish. And of course, always choose the back-up option before converting any of your files. 3. David, I have a modest file of just under 3000 people. I ran into some memory problems when I was reorganising the Media files, about 1200 of them. My System is Vista Home Premium, 2gb memory, 325gig free space on the drive and a 12 meg FTM file. Since then I've decided not to keep all the Media in FTM because they are uploaded when I sync up to Ancestry and a fair number of them are under copyright, particularly Parish Registers from FamilySearch and other sites. Then when such reports are run, it won't flag it, and you won't have to "blanket" turn off looking for that bug. Of course you should be able to run a report that does show the bugs you have overridden so you can check on that periodically. Otherwise, I think a large collection of data *should* fail some sanity checks. But you get to say if a specific item is sane or not. John

The first thing to do is to click on the person you want to change. his displays the individual's preferred facts in the right pane which s also called the Information pane. If the fact is displayed in the right (information) pane, you can make he change in that pane. If it is not shown in the right pane, click the Person Tab. This hanges to a work area similar to the FTM 16 Edit Individual dialog ox. All of the facts for the focal individual are displayed and you an make any changes by selecting the fact and making the change in the ight pane. The thing to watch out for is the removal of a fact from the list. If ou want to remove a fact, you select the fact in the left pane. Just bove the pane there is a Red X next to a Blue +. Clicking that Red X eletes the fact. PLEASE DO NOT CONFUSE it with the the icon of a erson's head and delete in the top right corner. Clicking that icon ELETES THE INDIVIDUAL. 3. All versions of FTM since FTM 2008 install as a new program and leave the old program alone As I answer a lot of questions here in AU and on many lists, so having older versions installed assists in building replies Most users of course would simply uninstall the old version when they have the new one running correctly. But it is (correctly IMO) the users' choice The icons are always different colours so that should not be an issue to users On my Windows XP PC I have FTM 16, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 and on my iMac (which also has Parallels and Windows 7) I have FTM 2012 and FTM for Mac 2 As I have an Ancestry world sub all I have to do is register and the program (which ever versions) recognises my login etc It all works very well. A reminder to people posting queries As there are so many versions of FTM with different characteristics it is important that you always advise which version you are using and which OS system plus some brief fike details, size etc It really helps in framing possible solutions to problams and speeds up the replies as well John D -----Original Message----- From: ftm-tech-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ftm-tech-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of John Yates Sent: Friday, 16 December 2011 12:04 PM To: ftm-tech@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [FTM-TECH] Family Tree Maker for Mac 2 I have now installed this program. For those that like knowing what to expect, which is not documented in the CD package they sent me, here are a few details: This install does not upgrade Family Tree Maker for Mac. It installs a completely separate program Family Tree Maker for Mac 2. It leaves the old program in place. Which means, if like me, you open the program via an icon in the dock, you open the old program after the install. It took me 10 seconds to figure this out, but I could have gone on forever not knowing this if I didn't think about it. So replace your FTM dock icon if you use one. A 14 day free trial is advertised on the CD packaging. After install, it did say if you already have an Ancestry subscription it would extend it for 14 days. However, it then proceeded to give me ONLY TWO choices, and both were to upgrade from US to World before continuing. I had to back out of it and gave up. It is either a bug, poorly written or simply deceptive. Since it is a new program, no tailored preferences survive the install. Nor is the list of recent files opened, which I do like to retain as I help dozens of people with their genealogy and easily forget which files I've worked on "recently". When you open a file, it warns you that it must upgrade its format, and from then on you cannot open it in the old version. Fair enough, so why keep the old program around? It would be better if it were a true upgrade, and one that preserved preferences, recently opened files, and whatever else I discover that it has lost. And a blanket "should I convert all files in your FTM directory?" would be nice. As to new features, or bugs, I don't have enough experience with it yet to know. But at least those ready to install it know what to expect as it is not described in the packaging. John

    3. John, You stated "moderate sized file - 131K folks", I do not consider that 131,000 people to be moderate. Anything under 50,000 might be moderate. You also have not stated how large the FTM file itself is, and how much media you have linked to it. As for the 400,000 and 800,000 person files, good luck. What other versions of FTM have you had these files opened with? The memory manager within Windows 7 is different than it is in any of the earlier versions. Generally it will do very well in managing the memory, providing all of the open programs are well written. It will gobble up as much memory as it can for the active program, and give up some when another program needs some more. Just waiting is NOT going to give you any extra RAM, you need to close some of those not in use programs. Can you provide a list of these programs that you normally have open at the same time as FTM? Rosemary, I have NOT had this happen to me at all. It would help, if you were state what version of Windows you are running, how much RAM is installed, how much empty disk space you have and how large your FTM file is and how many people are in it. 3. Another way to do the change if you want to change a fact name for a specific individual. *Right click on the fact you want to change *Select Fact Data Options * You will get a window advising you to back-up your file. I don't unless I'm doing a global change of a fact name * You will get a window showing all the facts for that person with the same name. You can pick one, some or all to change to the new name which can be selected from a drop-down box. * You can also choose to change that fact name for all individuals here. I use this extensively when I download census info from Ancestry. Ancestry wants to call this fact a 'residence'; I want it to be 'census'. After the download, I immediately change the 'residence' fact to a 'census' fact. I don't do a global change because not all residence facts are census. 1. [FTM-TECH] anyone other than me having problems with FTM 2012 shutting down without notic?
    2. John Okerson
    3. I have a moderate sized file - 131K folks. I try running FTM 2012 with 16 GB of RAM using Windows 7 Professional SP1. As I go to a variety of facets of the program, Windows Task Manager reports my memory usage increases. Of particular problem is Web Search, for I go back and forth between that and the People workspace, adding folks and their data. Sometimes, if I allow the program to sit undisturbed - maybe 45 minutes or so, the memory usage drops to about 50K. I normally start about 400K to 600K usage in People workspace. This seems to increase gradually to 900K to 1.1 M. If I notice it, I shutdown and restart FTM as otherwise, FTM will do so on its own, without notice and NOT so graciously - IOW when I restart FTM I get the you didn't shut down normally message. I do NOT like having to keep an eye on the program's memory usage, but seem to have to do so to preserve the integrity of my dataset. Normally, I would prefer to use the same loading of FTM for my typical 14 hours of labor. I know, it is an addiction. GRIN I have MUCH larger files I would like to use within FTM 2012 - one of 400K folks and another of 800K folks, but sadly they do NOT open. Any ideas would be appreciated?

    1. Re: [FTM-TECH] Will FTM 2012 override 2011 or install separately?

    3. FTM 2012 installs separately; however, it will use the list of previously opened FTM data bases as its list. The last file opened will the opened and converted. It will offer you the opportunity to create a backup file before conversion. Some have reported that it automatically converts all files but I've never had that happen to me. I must select the additional files to be opened and they are converted at that time.
