    3. I am having a similar problem. Running FTM 2014 (3rd Gen Intel Core i7-3770 processor, 3.40 GHz, 16GB SDRAM, running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit with 2TB hard drive, ). My file is relatively small with around 2500 people and 150 media items. There doesn't seem to be any particular cause. I can just be in the middle of some activity and it locks up. The last time I was in the midst of a web search when it froze, which could have been an Ancestry issue, but that is not always the case. Nothing works short of starting Task Manager, ending FTM and restarting. Sometimes that doesn't even work and the only option is to reboot. Fortunately I have not noticed any data loss in the process but it is annoying. However, FTM doesn't just freeze, it crashes completely. FTM 2014, Win 8, 64bit. It doesn't happen all the time, but quite frequently and there is no consistency of when it occurs -- no one particular person; copying to one or several people; not one particular fact. 3. Barb, For crashing issues, please go to the Help Menu, in FTM2014, click on Online Help Center. There will be a "key word" search box. Enter crash in the box and select the article for Windows 8. I have run files of 50K people, and the program is MUCH faster! I run the program and the database of my Samsung SSD 840 PRO 240 GB and have my virtual memory there too.

Like Denise Moss-Fitch, I have 16 GB of physical RAM (and 64 GB more virtual RAM on a SSD) but I use Windows 7 Professional SP1. [You can see this information for YOUR computer through FTM 2014 by going to Help, About Family Tree Maker and then System information. If you have the hardware to run in 64-bit mode, that would be how the FTM 2014 software would install itself. OTOH, I suspect that if you only have 4 GB of physical RAM and minimal virtual RAM, it might slow your system down. Would you post YOUR results either to the list or to me privately, please? I did precisely what you said you did. The spinning blue circle appears and the Not responding text appears for a short while and then both go away as the software finishes the task. To me, this is NORMAL! John Okerson Lakeland, TN

    3. I haven't experienced this particular problem but quite often FTM gets busy doing something in the background and seems to freeze. I've found it is best to wait a bit to see whether it will finish and then release control so I can do other things. Have you tried waiting a bit? Does it only happen for one person or one fact? Does the fact have a lot of sources or other information . How many people are you trying to paste the fact to? To me, this is NORMAL! Interesting John. I select a census entry to copy to other members of the family included on the census, select Copy, then select Paste. From the list of family members in the copy dialog I select the check boxes for individuals to whom I want the census copied, and click OK. Within a second or three, the copy dialog is gone and the FTM 2014 has completed the task. No 'Not Responding' displays. I suppose the difference could be the processor (this laptop has an Intel Core i7-3820Q processor). In addition to compacting the FTM file daily after working with the information I have background optimization of the computer's two hard disk drives too. Denise

There is considerable commonality of data between the two trees but there is also a considerable amount of additional data from the FTM tree which is stored in the AMT although it cannot be viewed in the AMT tree. I recently had a problem with my hard disk and lost my FTM file. Luckily I was able to download the AMT to a new file and recover. There was some additional clean up to get the file back but it was nothing near the amount of clean up required when I downloaded an AMT using FTM 2012. There is no way to use the sync feature to trade information between your tree and your wife's trees. Currently only one AMT can be synced to one FTM Tree on a single computer. Hopefully the development team are working on some way to sync a single AMT tree to the same tree on multiple computers i.e. on your desktop and you laptop. You can link your one FTM tree to one tree on Ancestry.com. Your wife can link each of her trees to a separate tree on Ancestry.com but there are not cross links. The reason people want to have trees in Ancestry.com is the ability to share data. This may not be as you anticipate. What this means is that the AMTs on Ancestry.com allow the owner to invite others to participate in the tree. An invitee does not have to have a subscriber account but they must register a user account. The owner can specify the level of participation for each invitee. * Guest - can only view the AMT and leave comments. They cannot see living individuals unless the owner also grants them that privilege. They cannot see Individual Notes. * Contributor - can view the AMT, leave comments and add stories and photos. They cannot see living individuals unless the owner also grants them that privilege. With FTM 2012 or FTM 2014 you can do TreeSync, but NOT with FTM 2011. I would suggest you convert the trees you have on FTM 2011 to FTM 2012 and then consider syncing them to Ancestry.com. Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: I'm not sure whether you have received a satisfactory reply to your question or not. I think most of us need a bit more detail before we know how to answer you. Are you using FTM 2012 which is the older version of FTM or are you using the latest version FTM 2014. FTM 2014 is much more advanced as for syncing files.. We also need to clarify a couple of terms. * Syncing files is performed between a single copy of a FTM data file and a single member tree stored on Ancestry.com. You can only sync your file to your Ancestry Member Tree (AMT). This feature allows the user to ensure the two linked trees have the same data. * The only two ways to establish a sync link between the two files are: 1. You can start with your FTM data file and upload it to a synced tree. This will take your data and most of your media files and upload them into a new AMT on Ancestry.com. 2. You can start with an existing AMT and download it into a new FTM data base. This will download the data and media from an existing AMT and generate a new FTM data file. There are a few quirks and a certain amount of data clean up which may be necessary with the FTM data file. This is heavily dependent upon which version of FTM you are using. FTM 2012 requires considerably more clean up than does FTM 2014. * Once you establish the sync link between the two trees, you can elect to have the sync process performed automatically (done when you open and close the FTM file) or manually (performed when you click "Sync Now"). FTM has another feature which allows the user to download and incorporate data from Ancestry.com's data bases and from AMT's belonging to other users. This is performed with the Search and Hints features. The user can use the Web Merge Wizard to insert the data from Ancestry.com into his existing tree. This is not called Syncing but I'm not sure whether your question is referring to this or not. Finally FTM has a feature called Web Clipping. This allows the user to "merge" information from third party web sites into the FTM file. Again this is not called Syncing. >From your initial comment, I'm not sure to which feature you are referring so can you be a bit more specific? 3. I'm not sure whether you have received a satisfactory reply to your question or not. BJ On 12/19/2013 12:23 PM, [email protected] wrote: > I just got the 2012 FTM. 1. Re: [FTM-TECH] Is FTM 2014 not ready for Windows 8.1?
    2. It definitely has to do with your download folder. When it "goes to the bottom of the screen" click on the file name. That will open it up on your screen and you can do a File, Save As, and save it to wherever you want your document to be. If you download a lot of files in a row, they start lining up across the bottom and stay there until you close out your browser. Or if it gets too cumbersome, there is a way to close them all, but at the moment I can't remember if you click an x to close them or if it's a "clear all". Judi Pantano Sent from my iPad Since I usually go directly from the download to the person's profile page, set up to upload tha say whether you tot image, and when I to the download file first rename it according to the protocol I set up 20 years ago, then close the bar for the file as I downloaded it as that file no longer exists. Therefore I never get a line up of bars. All they are is a command bar to say whether you want to open a file or to save it to your harddrive, tell you when it is downloading and when the download is complete and where it is and what it is called so you can find it.
