    3. Thank you Chris. I really appreciate your reminding us of the use of the slash, /. You are correct. The slash, /, is the character used to delimit between the comment and the location. My apologies for the mistake. BJ On 1/23/2014 4:41 AM, Chris Bauman wrote: > 2005 is the original, DOS-based program, right? I thought the divider for comment vs. location was the slash /. With the comment listed in front of it. At least, that's what I have in the v. 16 file I still have kicking around.

    3. Hello BJ, Russ and others. I rang Ancestry Support today. We went through the different possibilities. Like always, they asked me if I compacted my file to Zero. I had. I also tried to see if I could replicate the problem with my test trees to see if the problem was with them as well. The one thing we both concluded was that my main Tree was Synced properly and that any deletions at FTM-2014 were reflected on my online tree. However, the count is out of whack. What's causing it, I'm not sure. But I reported the issue ... and see what tomorrow will bring. Many Thanks and Cheers. 2. BJ
    3. Unfortunately, you have no choice but to re upload your file to get it synced with your file on the new computer. FTM 2014 implemented a method which allows the user to relink to a AMT by restoring the file from a FTM 2014 backup. This feature is not available under FTM 2012. Here is what you need to do. 1. Go to the existing AMT online. 2. Next to the tree name in the upper left corner, you will see "Tree pages" Click the down arrow next to it. 3. Click on "Tree settings" 4. The "Tree Settings" window will open. 5. Look on the list of activities on the right side. 6. There you can Delete the online tree. 7. Click that and follow the directions. Now you can open FTM 2012 and upload your file using the same name. If you had anyone invited to your old tree, you will need to re invite them to the new tree. 3. It should work perfectly Install FTM 2014 and register it It should detect your FTM 2005 file and offer to convert a copy Of course a wise genealogist will always have a backup I suspect that when you get into it, you will have to do some work as a once off on Places but plenty of good tools in FTM I would also suggest that you turn on the Description field for at least Birth, Christening, Marriage, Death and Burial But it works well If you have a 64-bit Windows computer, FTM 2014 will install as 64-bit which significantly improves the speed , especially if you have more than 4GB of RAM John D -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of PJK . 3. I agree with what John said. Something you should do before you convert your FTM 2005 file, compact it using FTM 2005. Also go through your Comment/Location field and ensure you insert a semicolon (;) between the comment and the actual place or location name. If the field only contains a comment e.g. many Occupation facts, place a semicolon after the data in the field. This will save you some aggravation once the file has been converted to FTM 2014. If you take these precautions, FTM will be able to separate the two types of data into the appropriate field. Good luck. Fred -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Derk & Lorraine Sherren Sent: Wednesday, January 22, 2014 10:10 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [FTM-TECH] Problems with deletions My problem is more with additions. Did you know that folks with trees over 50,000 people are very few in the total collection of trees on Ancestry? I have talked to several "Associates" about my problem and they essentially said that it's the SIZE of the tree that is creating the problem. Essentially what is happening is every time I add, say 100 people to my FTM tree and then sync, the AFT adds 108 people *to the count*. I have even noticed that even the count in my FTM tree is not accurate to what I have added. More than one Associate has said that the larger the tree gets, the more difficult it is for the counting system to keep up. Going by my FTM tree, my count is 62,735 vs. my synched AFT at 62,863, making a current difference of 128 folks (up from 86 two months ago). Since the AFT trees do not have the ability to "look" for duplicates, and I am certainly not going to manually check through the 62,000+ names for duplicates, the Associate said just to accept the fact that the count itself is probably wrong, and 128 is very little compared to the total. So, John, if you apply his reasoning to your deletions, unless you can see your un-named spouses still sitting there, there is a good possibility that the *count* in your AFT can't keep up with the changes. Yes, I'm always logged into Ancestry.com when I work on "new tree." I've compacted the file. When I click on the leaf, Ancestry shows a list of sources on the top half of the screen.  I click on a source that I would like to see on the bottom right part of the screen.  It doesn't appear even if I wait a long time.  This only happens with the new tree.  With my tree, which I've been working on many years, the Leaf/Hint/Merge process works just fine.  These are two entirely different families which should not be combined.  I'm working on "new tree" for a friend who has no computer & no internet. I deleted "new tree" on the desktop computer and started over.  The second attempt did not work.  So I installed FTM on my laptop computer and started again with a new file.  I did not use the file from the desktop computer & I did not put "my file" on the laptop.  I still have the same problem. I'm on my 3rd try with the new tree & it's still not working. The list of hints should appear in the upper, center panel indeed. When you left click on any of the choices - found under Record Type - that is when the information should appear in the lower right corner, named Search result detail. IF you choose to do so, you can merge that record's information with that of your tree. It sounds as if you are saying that the lower right corner NEVER populates. Is that correct?? I've compacted the file. I thought AKA meant "Also Known As" and refers to people who have a nickname or alias. The people I'm deleting are unknown and have simply been used as 'markers', which was a convenient tool in my previous genealogy program, but not necessary in FTM. Most of these, but not all, are unnamed spouses. The 'marker' I used was: ?? -?? (?? = unknown given name; -?? = unknown surname). I'm deleting anyone whose given name or surname are known (eg. ?? Brown, or Mary -??). Where there is more than one spouse (and children), I'm retaining the marker. I'm also eliminating unknown progenitors, which I used to name as 'Ancestor Brown', 'Ancestor Phillips', etc. I have many of these and it is just taking up space. However, I'm keeping some where there might be a story related to the Surname, or possible notes regarding where the unknown ancestor might live. Many Thanks and Cheers. 3. My problem is more with additions. I don't know if I did this before or after I did the TreeSync. But I've tried it again just now. Re. BJ's comments. Everything is still out of sync. Tree Overview says that I have 96,836 people on my Ancestry Member Tree. But in my FTM database there are 96,703 individuals. That's a difference of 133 individuals deleted, but not represented, in turn on my online Tree. I notice something amiss when the statistical table came up, telling me what changes were about to be made. In FTM-2013, deletions were no problem. I don't really know why it's not happening in FTM-2014. If the number of people in the database and in the online Tree don't correspond with each other, that means that the Trees are out of Sync with each other. I do not relish sending up a new Ancestry Tree for the sake of reconciling the two figures. Any further ideas or suggestions? - Many Thanks and Cheers. - John M. >________________________________ > From: John Maynard <[email protected]> >To: [email protected] > >Except that I've encountered one serious problem.
