I have my XP system that I use for data entry for FTM-2006/16 and also my Windows 7 Ultimate system. I have FTM-2006/16 on the Windows 7 system but do not use it for data entry or report generation as the PDF internal generator does not work properly. However, I have "Windows XP Mode" installed on the Windows 7 Ultimate system and this allows me to run Windows XP on a virtual machine and use FTM-2006/16 on this virtual machine and it works exactly the same as on my XP systems. Also have a notebook with Windows 7 Ultimate with the same "Windows XP Mode" that allows me to run FTM-2006/16 on that machine as well. This is my solution and preparation for the day when my old XP system gives up the gost. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Arnold E. I'm curious. What version of Windows are you running? I am absolutely disgusted with FTM 2012 and am thinking of going back to FTM Version 16. Does anyone know if I can run it on Windows 7. I don't believe it will load over FTM 2012,. Does anyone know how I might convert to V. 16 given my circumstances.? Look forward to any suggestions out there. I run FTM 2014 on under Windows 8.1 64-bit. Can you give us some background on why you are disgusted with FTM 2102? Are you experiencing some problems? Or isn't it running as fast as you want? Or do you just don't like the new look and feel of the user interface? You can run FTM 16 under Windows 7. Also FTM 2012 will not stop you from installing FTM 16. Many are running both FTM 16 and FTM 2008 - 2014. Both will be installed in different sub-folders in the Programs folder. It has been some time since I did anything with FTM 16 but as I recall the only way you can convert your FTM 2012 file back into FTM 16 is by exporting the file to a GEDCOM file. This is how you do it: 1. Open your file in FTM 2012. 2. Click File and select Export. 3. Ensure all options are checked EXCEPT for the "Make file private". 4. Click the down arrow in the Output format and select GEDCOM 5.5. 5. The Export to GEDCOM dialog box will open. 6. Accept the destination defaults which should be "FTM 16" and "ANSI". 7. This should produce a GEDCOM file which can be imported into FTM 16. I hope this answers your question. BJ On 2/10/2014 3:09 PM, [email protected] wrote: > I'm curious. My old faithful workhorse FTM Version 16 has been stable and working perfectly until a couple of weeks ago. It continues to work fine in every aspect except for the Web Search. Sure hope someone can help. Here is what happens: 1. When I click Web Search Resources, it does seem to switch over to start the search but progress with the blue bar stops BEFORE completing one run. 2. It then abruptly switches to a page that shows "Please Wait" just above a box with magnifying glass moving back and forth. Below that are the words "Your search results are being retrieved." 3. Unfortunately, nothing is ever retrieved and that page stays with the magnifying glass moving indefinitely. I've let it run for over an hour with the same result. Previously, retrieving was instantaneous as was merging the selected records. I'm using a Dell Windows 7 Professional laptop with 64-bit operating system, 8 GB of installed RAM. I think it was Courtney who helped me a couple of years ago with the work-around installing Version 16 on my 64-bit machine and it has worked beautifully so that doesn't appear to be the current problem. I tried the usual "fixes" by compacting my FTM, then using CCleaner and defragmenting my computer, turning computer off and on, etc. Best Buy's Geek Squad just did a thorough check and my computer is considered healthy in every other way. I contacted Ancestry.com by phone but was told they are no longer offering phone support for Version 16 but that I might try writing to Ancestry. Was also told that my AOL browser could be the problem and to try Internet Explorer, Safari, Chrome, etc. Sooo, I tried connecting with Internet Explorer and also with Chrome. Sigh...all to no avail. Web Search seems stuck in perpetual motion trying to retrieve. I'm working on a major genealogy project for a national organization and truly NEED the use of FTM Version 16's Web Search feature. For reasons too complicated to get into here, it is not feasible for me to use a later version so I'm hoping one of you can offer some assistance. Many thanks for any help! Pat
BJ, Many thanks for the response. You mention that many special charts/reports don't have an option to specify the items to include. In FTM 2014 there are 10 chart options available. The Relationship Chart is the only one not having the green option icon to specify the items to include. In responding to a query I received several days ago from a family member, it would have been quite helpful if this option existed for the Relationship Chart. I've been away from this message board for about seven years. Retirement has allowed me to get back to FTM, upgrade it to the 2014 version, and enjoy once again reading this board. What is the preferred way nowadays for submitting suggestions to the developers for enhancing future releases of FTM? I'd like to submit this one regarding the Relationship Chart. I would like to have these open side-by-side so that I can compare the information in both files and add what is different from small file to main tree. Hope this makes sense. I do have Version 16 so I could reinstall that on this PC to use for second file, but it seems much more simple if they are both open to the same version. Thanks for your help, BB
BJ, The "Items to include" is a very helpful feature in the Custom Report and other reports and charts. It doesn't appear to be available, however, for the Relationship Chart. Am I overlooking some control or is the "Items to include" feature really not available for this chart for some reason. If this is true, you may change no only the order of the names shown for the individual but also elect to show only the last name, etc. To do this 1. Generate the Custom Report 2. Click on the "Items to include" icon (the one with the green arrow) 3. A dialog box opens showing various options and the items to be included in the report. 4. Select Name 5. Select Name Options 6. The "Options: Name" dialog box opens. 7. Click on the down arrow in the "Format" field. 8. A list of formatting options is displayed. Select the one you want. 9. Click OK until you return to the generated custom report. I hope that helps. BJ
The Relationship Chart is a hard coded report to simply show the relationship between two individuals showing only the name, birth and death information in addition to the relationship path. As is in the case of many special charts/reports, they do not provide for the Items to include option.
