I agree that the panels should be resizable. My comment was directed more toward the characterization of the sizes between the two panels. It may be caused by the resolution of your screen but the ratios between the two panels is not 2:1. I'm pretty sure they are sized from the top of the screen area. To get more of the dashboard, lengthen the window. This is true of all work areas. If you shorten the window too much, you begin losing area from the bottom first. Hi John, I did not manually enter any personal ID numbers. I figured out how to delete all person Ids automatically by creating a new fact and changing the person lD to the new fact. Then deleting the new fact. I want to only use the automatic person Id. In FTM 2014 You can edit the automatic generated Person ID # and make it private by clicking on the pencil to the right of the grayed number. Now how do I fix the problem with the numbers in below as I only have 120000 people in the database and in the report every person has a number, how can the numbers be higher than 120000. Note the number 14752570713534 for Charlemagne Carolingian. Also note 59010282854136. i. Charles Martel. I never had numbers like this in older versions of FTM. 198664. Thomas Thornton. I'm sorry but I don't understand the problem. I opened both FTM 2012 and FTM 2014 to the Plan work area. I then maximized both windows. I looked at both and find more space available for the Dashboard in FTM 2014 than in FTM 2012. Unfortunately, the list does not allow images but FTM 2012 limits the dashboard to approximately 1/5 the size of the Tasks work area and it only goes up the right side about 2/3 of the window size. FTM 2014 on the other hand, the dashboard and the Task area are the same width which is approximately 4/5 the width of the window. The Task area is slightly higher than the Dashboard but only about 1/6 larger. The big loser in space between FTM 2012 and FTM 2014 is the Task area. The winners in FTM 2014 are the Tree Sync area and About This Family Tree area, both are narrower but taller and the Dashboard which is slightly shorter but much wider. The Tree selection area has been removed from the static display in the FTM 2014 Plan work area but redesigned into a drop down window available in any work area. Personally, I think the new design is much better use of the landscape than FTM 2012. Just my 2 cents worth. BJ On 2/21/2014 4:06 PM, Rosemary Jones wrote: > No way that I can figure. The only problem is if the chart is more than about 200 x 200 inches, you will get a message saying the chart is too big and will be clipped. There is no way to get around this. FTM uses a 3rd party's PDF generator and there are no controls or options. The 3rd party generator is developed to the PDF Version 1.3 or about Acrobat 4.x level) which controls the maximum page size. Up to Acrobat 3.0 - 45 x 45 inches (max) From Acrobat 4.0 - 200 x 200 inches (max) As I understand it Adobe 8 and above have a higher max page size but most readers will not handle the custom sizes. I have BullZip PDF installed. It can match Adobe 8 and I was able to use it to create a PDF with 1000 x 1000 inches page. I set that as my default printer. FTM then used that as a printer and I could specify the Extended Family Chart be produced on a page 1000 x 1000. I could see the chart in FTM 2014 and I was able to print it using the BullZip PDF driver; however, when I opened the PDF in any reader, the page always appeared blank. There was no way to view the chart. As for the maximum number of generations for the Pedigree chart, I suspect that has to do with the maximum page size of 200 inches when you export it to a One page PDF. It is difficult to get 16 generations on a single 200 inch high page. If I used the chart defaults for the information and format, I could not even get 16 generations on one page. The bottom of the chart was always clipped. Playing around with the format, i.e. using "squished" and with the information included (Birth, Married, Death with date and location only, i.e. no description); I was able to get it to 199 inches. Check the size of the chart in the upper right corner of the Preview. The format is width x height. I'm not sure what you mean when you say, "Reindex the file". You can change the sort of the index displayed but other than that there is no way to reindex the file. Can you explain with a bit more information exactly what are you trying to do? Hope this helps. In versions FTM 2012 and earlier, compacting was needed much more than it is in FTM 2014 because it was a method for correcting addresses and possible errors in links. FTM 2014 has a new data base structure and is much more robust and stable. As a result, compacting isn't needed as much as it was in previous versions. It is useful in recovering empty space in the data base and unlike its predecessor it recovers all space down to 0%. You can use the Share, Export to one page PDF to send the chart to a PDF file. Can any of you tell me how to generate a poster chart or other kind of chart like in the older versions of FTM that shows all ancestors on one chart so I can create a PDF file of it as one page. It will create a chart but it is on like 70 pages but still only 16 generations not as one page like the older versions of FTM. Saving it as one PDF file lets a person move around the tree and see where everyone. I went to pedigree chart and selected poster, but it only lets me do 16 generations . Is there any way to reindex a file in FTM 2014 Thanks Fred
BJ This has been a long day, and I can't say much now (have some basketball to watch!). But I wanted you to know that your more detailed instructions have enabled me to delete 110 "islands" from my database today. With a moderately large database this has consumed hours of work. So I'm tired, but very happy with what you have helped me to learn. My best guess is that I probably have at least several more hundreds to delete (and one critical "island" to export). I suspect I may have another week's work on this, but it will be worth it. And I did order FTM 2014, by the way--thought it might be a bit faster than my present FTM 2012. If you are only interested in one or two large trees and want to get rid of the rest, it might be less time consuming to use the same technique to select the desired trees, export them to new files and then simply delete the current files with all of the unwanted trees. You can then restore the two exported files into separate FTM files. The only downside is if the main data base is synced to an AMT. Even then it might be easier to delete that AMT and then re-upload the new data base to Ancestry.com. Enjoy the basketball games. No need to buy FTM 2014 to do this but personally I like FTM 2014 the best of all. Now as to your questions. I'll try to be more explicit but please forgive me if I over simplify as I don't know your level of expertise with the program. Remember to make a backup of your file before you begin. 1. With FTM 2012 open using the tree in question. Go to the People work area and select an individual in the main tree. Normally the main tree involves the Home person but it can be anyone within the main tree. 2. Click on Publish. 3. Click on Charts 4. Double Click on Extended Family Chart 5. I suggest you tailor what is displayed on the chart by Clicking on the option - Items to include. This is the first icon at the top of the right panel. Hover the cursor over the icon to see the title. 6. A dialog box opens which allows to you select what you want to include in the place. I suggest you remove the check mark next to source. If you've never used this before, it is probably set to Include: Name, Birth, Marriage and Death dates. This will probably be enough to let you identify the individuals in the trees. Click OK to return the the Preview work area. 7. Now if you will look at the panel on the right, you will see three check boxes. Place a check mark in the middle one - Include all individuals. I would also remove the check mark next to the first option - Center tree on page as this will make it easier to view the chart to find the different branches. As you make changes in the options, the chart will begin generating. Ignore it and simply continue making the changes I described. 8. Let the chart generate. This may take some time depending upon the number of people in the data base. 9. I suggest you display the chart at about 50% of its size (option found in the upper left corner just beneath the chart title, Extended Family Chart Preview. This will let you see more of the chart in a single window. 10. Begin scrolling down the chart. You will see different generation levels in the main tree but you will eventually begin to see other separate trees. 11. You can normally identify them by their isolation. They will display on the left of the chart. They will not have any connecting lines to the trees above. It is really difficult to see but alternating trees have a slight variation in the back ground. I really which it were more distinct. I was looking for it and missed it the first five times I looked at it. 12. Once you have identified a tree that you want removed, Click on anyone in that tree. The box around the selected person will change to blue. 13. Click the right mouse button. A list of options will pop-up. 14. Select "Person and all Relations" ( the seventh option down in the list). Now all individuals in that tree is selected as indicated by the blue box around each. 15. Place the cursor over one person in the tree and again click the right mouse button. 16. Click the "Delete from tree" option from the list. Another list of options will be displayed. Click on the top option, "Selected Persons". This will delete everyone who has a blue box so ensure only the individuals in the one tree are selected. 17. You can repeat steps 10 through 16 to eliminate all unwanted trees. If you want to export the selected individuals rather than delete them, Use the "Export" option in lieu of the "Delete" option. Hope this helps. Sorry; I may have sent this to a wrong place before. Try again. . . ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Bruce King <[email protected]> Date: Fri, Feb 14, 2014 at 5:17 PM Subject: FTM 2012 / FTM 2014 To: [email protected] I have FTM 2012 running on Windows 7 (Home Premium), on a 64bit laptop. I have an FTM database A containing an FTM sub-database B. (See below if you need to know more about A and B.) I am using BJ's instructions from his email of 29 Oct 2012 (14:55:12)--see the archives--and here are some of today's problem(s): [1] In instruction 1: "Generate the Extended Family Chart and select the option to include All Individuals" I don't encounter that option. Where is it? [2] In instruction 3: ". . . you should see isolated tree/branches and/or individuals." I don't see those [3] in Instruction 6: "Select Person and All Relations." I don't encounter that option. Where is it? The simplest explanation for this is that my version of FTM isn't the right one. Should I buy FTM 2014? Footnote: In late 2012 I raised some questions about an FTM file of about 10,000 people (file A). That database included two general components: (a) a "core" sub-tree, larger than half of A, with all people related to one another, and (b) a loose group of other people, either isolated individuals, or groups ("islands") of related people within an island, but otherwise unconnected to others. This part of A can be labeled file B. At that time, several people responded to my distress but, in the end, I did what I needed to do in a somewhat tedious but simpler way. -- /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ Bruce: [email protected] Mary: [email protected] /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ -- /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ Bruce: [email protected] Mary: [email protected] /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\
Recently someone asked how they might submit a suggestion or other feedback for FTM or Ancestry.com. I searched a long time and then stumbled upon a web address. Well the happy news is that there is an easier way although it is not too intuitive. Here is how to find it. 1. In FTM, Click - Help and select Online Help Center 2. The Online Help Center web page will open, look on the right side beneath Contact Us. 3. Click - Ask the Community 4. Scroll the page until you see More Resources 5. Click - Submit Feedback Hope this helps. BJ

I hesitated to mention that in my earlier post so as to not confuse Pat. Perhaps you can walk him/her through it. I would definitely first: 1) save all files as they are, and COPY to somewhere other than c:\ drive (I use dropbox) 2) then convert and save all files as gedcoms, and COPY to somewhere other than c:\ drive (dropbox) That way you have 2 sets of identical files. If the files on the Dell get corrupted you can COPY them back from your safe saving place. 3) install Windows XP mode 4) shutdown/restart, try v16 and see if it runs better under the XP mode. If not: 5) uninstall v16/shutdown/restart/reinstall, try again with the files on the Dell 6) If that doesn't work MY last resort would be to buy/beg/borrow/steal another machine with Windows XP only and install v16 from disk, COPY the good files from the safe place. Again, I use dropbox At home I use my HP Windows 7 machine and save to a folder called _Family Files_ on my desktop AND to dropbox "in the sky" as I call it. On the road, I use a little HP Win XP machine, COPY FROM dropbox "in the sky", work on it, COPY TO dropbox "in the sky". Then, when back home, I COPY the saved fresh file FROM dropbox "in the sky" back to the _Family Files_ folder. I've actually worked on the file at 35,000 feet "IN the sky" coming back from somewhere :) I sure hope this helps. BTW, dropbox is simple, and free. I love it. Randy
I failed to mention in my previous reply to you that I have this same problem when I try to do a search on my Windows 7 Ultimate system when using FTM-2006/16. It has been this way since I first installed FTM-16 on it. Reinstalling will not help as it appears that Ancestry.com do not provide the cookie to systems that are older than what they want to support. Their way to try and force users to use the much inferior new products that they are pushing. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Arnold E.
