    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: LGranat Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.software.ftmmac/113.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I agree with you. I have been playing with it for several days since it arrived, and I am experiencing a CRASH about once an hour. This is unacceptable! I have reported every crash over a 48 hr period, but have not received one reply from FTM or Ancestry! I would at lease like some assurance that they are working on the problem and will send updates to correct the crash issue. So far, nothing. In addition, the Places portion of the program needs lots of work. When I try to resolve a place name that only includes the county and state, it wants to insert a city especially if there is a city that shares the same name as the county. For example, I have Sacramento Co., CA and when I hit the resolve key, it places Sacramento, Sacramento, California, USA into the place field. I don't want the city of Sacramento, but just the county. The program won't cooperate! I'm not willing to upload my information to online yet until I can be assured that the program is mostly bug-free. Come on guys, you can do better than this! Regrettably this is not the case. I mentioned that the gateway between the soc.genealogy.britain newsgroup and the GENBRIT mailing list because this has been working to my certain knowledge in both directions for around 15 years and maybe more. The technology to do this without setting up loops was known when the message board was set up. So why did someone deliberately ignore it then? And why, knowing this to be the case, do the message board administrators and the matching list administrators not try to put a stop to this refusal to implement old and reliable technology. > If you have further questions or comments, the Help Desk > (http://rootsweb.custhelp.com) should be able to help you. 3. Hi Tim The gateway has worked the way it does for many years. It's not a conspiracy by RootsWeb or Ancestry and no one is trying to kill off the lists. The gateways are opened by agreement from both the message board administrator and the matching list administrator so that list members get not only the benefit of subscribing to a list but are also abe to see the messages posted on the board without having to constantly check the board. I *think* the gateway is only one way to prevent an infinite loop of messages going around from list to board to list to board . . . . If you have further questions or comments, the Help Desk (http://rootsweb.custhelp.com) should be able to help you. Kind regards, Lynne list admin. -----Original Message----- > >I wonder why not? Are Rootsweb trying to kill off the mailing lists? Or is it Ancestry that is trying to kill them off? Most sites will accept a plain GEDCOM file which almost any home genealogy program will generate. The disadvantage of doing your genealogy on a home computer is that you must also make regular backups including off-site. The disadvantage of doing your genealogy on one of the commercial websites is that there is no guarantee that they are secure. And they may well go broke leading to problems recovering your data. The advantage of somehow publishing your genealogy is that anyone can make copies so that your data will be preserved. So don't make it difficult for others to copy your material. -- Tim Powys-Lybbe tim@powys.org for a miscellany of bygones: http://powys.org/

Author: jedwin31001 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.software.ftmmac/113.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Besides the frequent hangups and mysterious shutting down, there is a fatal bug that will change your data. In Places trying to resolve a name for a county where there is also a city in the county with the same name (Abbeville, South Carolina and Abbeville, Abbeville, South Carolina) FTM Mac2 will always default to the city place name no matter what you click on in the drop down list. I reported this to the developer several days ago but got no response. I reinstalled the software this morning but the bug is still there. For me right now the software is unusable. It reminds me of when I just installed the program and got ready to upload my data. Only I can upload (takes an hour) and then work in the program and close it - only to come back and it be un-linked from ancestry. Very annoying. There is no button to sort the children only button showing is the button that blends families. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: Huskergma Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.software.ftmmac/113.2.1.1.1.1.2.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm having some issues with the tree syncing to ancestry.com. It will sync ok and then the next time I go into the FTM Mac2 version program the tree will be un-sync'd from ancestry. I can go out to ancestry.com and see that my tree is there. I'm wondering if this is an issue with larger files. I have over 13,000 in my tree........it's very annoying to have to re-upload, re-sync the tree on a daily basis as it takes over an hour to sync the tree and all the media files. I also have an issue with the program that I can no longer sort the children by date of birth. Seems to me that FTM rushed this program to the public without fully testing the product. I spent over an hour on the phone with tech support the other day and I'm still waiting for responses to my email inquiries. One response that I got was to delete the duplicate tree from ancestry.com this does not solve the problem at all. I'm beginning to think that I should have just stayed with the first version of the mac software. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Converted to a Mac 2-3 years ago, and Legacy is one of the two programs I use that I couldn't find a suitable alternative for the Mac. So I have stayed with Legacy, using Parallels to run in a Windows environment. I am wanting to rid myself of Parallels and Windows, so FTM2 for Mac seems like a good idea (at least it did before reading the comments below). I am also wanting to create an online family tree. I have never uploaded my file(s) to the online family tree. I obviously want this to go as smoothly as possible, and it looks like I have at least a couple of options. I can create a Gedcom file from Legacy and then import that into FTM2, then create the online Ancestry Family Tree from that, or..... I can create the online tree by uploading from Legacy and then create the FTM2 file from syncing with the online Ancstry Family Tree. Any advice for the smoothest transfer(s)?
