Author: dietmar_morley Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.software.ftmmac/113.4.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thanks Russ, All software is up to date, but I will try the other items listed. This may solve the crashing issues, but it won't help incorrectly reading Census dates when merging from the website or multiple copies of media or having to redo 90% of the search work already done online or the other items that make this software rubbish in comparison with what you can do on the website. I am still thoroughly disappointed. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have only been using FTM for 3 months on 4 trees ranging in size from 150-720 people. Regardless of size of my data base, the program will suddenly close. this occurs frequently. It is most frustrating when I am just completing a census merge, as I lose all the work. I have not spoken to Ancestry about this yet but plan to and had hoped the upgrade might fix it. I'll hope to hear more from you as you experiment. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. As far as compacting is concerned, I couldn't under Mac 1 and needed to convert my file to Windows and do it there and then convert it back. The subject line is for FTM2012, but you are posting on the Mac version of Family Tree Maker which would be FTMM-1 or FTMM-2. I think it appears to be a massive dump of outdated software...what a shame because I got really excited when I could sync new data from my phone and my iPad, but not from my computer...UGH! Author: dietmar_morley Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.software.ftmmac/113.4/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, I'm new to the whole family tree thing and when I started about 2 months ago I got on to Ancestry and was amazed at how wonderful the tree builder was. In a very short time I had what I considered was quite a large tree so I thought if the site is this good the associated FTM software must be great too. This is when my naivety and lack of experience kicked in. My first mistake was to buy the software from the Ancestry shop. Then I bought some magazines and found how much cheaper I could get it from other sources! When I loaded the software I was amazed at how awful it is after my experiences on the main site. I had read a couple of reviews, but these must have been written by the same people that wrote the software! The programme constantly crashes, there is no sync feature (which confuses me as some of the replies to this thread say that the sync feature works!) when I try and merge my tree from the Ancestry site, it works OK, but I get duplicate media attachments, I can't seem to view the media as easily as on the main site, during the merge census data doesn't compare properly as the dates don't seem to match..... It is frankly awful and a terrible waste of money. Is someone suing Ancestry in a class action suit for providing a different product to that which has been advertised? Can you actually get your money back on this rubbish? I will try Reunion as I bought this first, but I thought I'd buy FTM as well because I was using Ancestry as my tree builder and it was supposed to be easy to merge data between the two. Rubbish, Rubbish, Rubbish! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: suelopes Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.software.ftmmac/120.1.1.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have always used a hash to indicate an abbreviation for a source in the Place field without a problem (as it is not used as a marker in a gedcom) It was the "help" I got when I uploaded my gedcom to the FTM mob for assessment. Rather than addressing the problem of the slash they focussed on the hash. As I said, at that point I gave up with the help line. I changed my slashes to underscore and things have recorded fine. My family tree sits on roots web at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=sues_rels You can see how I use hash and underscore Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I thought the issue was the Slash but is it also the # sign? If so, what was that all about? Just trying to understand what's going on. I didn't see any issues with any file, on import, into FTMM-1. When you opened that GEDCOM file, were there any Error Messages on import? Was there a .LOG file on import? We do NOT recommend that you add a # sign in the locations fields or any of the fields. The location field is connected to the Maps feature and the # sign will interfere with Family Tree Maker MAC working properly. Author: suelopes Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.software.ftmmac/120.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have only ever had one version for my MAC as it was bought about 12 months ago, soon after I bought my MAC. Prior to that I was using a PC. When I tried to use the GEDCOM file generated by the PC in the MAC, I discovered that every other software program (including online ones Ancestry.com, rootsweb, my heritage and tribal pages) could cope with a slash in the place field...but not the MAC version of Family Tree Maker. I reported this 12 months ago and the response was remove the slashes from "Member Solutions" Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
