With the connections to Ancestry.com and ability to search other trees, compare data I think I have been able to make amazing progress in my research. I am new to genealogy, but with other experience in research I am finding this a good experience. However, I don't have other genealogy product experience with which to compare. I do find the data base and program easy to use....so for now, I'll stick at least with FTMM1. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [FTM-MAC] Migrate from FTM 2012 to FTM Mac 2
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: HJC3HJC3 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.software.ftmmac/122/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Have others migrated from FTM 2012 (PC) to FTM Mac 2? I am having a great many issues with data and am wondering if it is the data, the software, or both. I have many duplicate place names. It seems that on almost every time I enter a place name for someone it creates a second instance of that place. All subsequent additions seem to go into the new place. When I go through my list of places and try to replace one with another (no pun intended), often the replace fails with no error. I have found that if I go the other way and replace the second one with the first instead, many times, but not always, it will work. I have noticed many problems with sorting. Regardless of the sort order or preferred status specified, Marriages on the PEOPLE screen PERSON tab are usually in the wrong order. Clicking the date heading at the top of the screen does not impact the marriages, but will truly mess up the rest of the information order, and I wasn't able to straighten that out without closing the program and restarting it. Also, even when children are correctly listed by birth date on the PEOPLE screen FAMILY tab, when you go to the PERSON tab the mini chart at the top shows the children in the wrong birth order much of the time. When using the WEB SEARCH function and merging a census record, the merge presents the existing children in a hodgepodge order. Doesn't seem to be by date of birth or alphabetically. I'm wondering if any of these things are related to the way the data was migrated from 2012 to FTMM2 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Didn't I write that I was using the member tree. What I am frustrated about is the fact that I spent a lot of money on something that doesn't deliver. Can you please explain where the sync facility is? Everything I have read says that FTM for mac doesn't have the facility yet. The companion guide doesn't mentioned it. If it had a sync facility I wouldn't need to merge! You also don't understand what I am saying about the merge thing. The merge automatically creates another copy of the source file when I do the merge. Actually whilst I'm typing a thought has just occurred to me, when I check the ignore this fact during the merge, but leave the "keep the reference" box checked, is that where the duplication occurs? When I said the same thing happens with photographs, I am talking about 3 copies of the same photograph appearing after the merges. You don't mention anything about the other problems I have had. Any bright ideas on those? The census merge for example? Dietmar Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: rworthington Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.software.ftmmac/113.4.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Dietmar, If you like the Ancestry Member Tree and how it works, why not use it. You said: "As FTM for mac doesn't have a sync facility", in fact the FTMM-2 DOES have the TreeSyncT feature. If you do a web merge 3 or 4 times on the same record, you will see that record 3 or 4 times. However, if you follow the hints, or do a web search for the same person, that record should not be presented to you again. The only way that you will get multiple copies, if you create them / merged. During the Web Merge process, you will he offered the choices. I think that is what you were trying to explain. What about the photographs? They just don't get Linked to a person. YOU have to do that. Russ Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: dietmar_morley Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.software.ftmmac/113.4.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Russ, I have done most of my tree building on line as I find the interface much more friendly than in FTM as I think I mentioned. As FTM for mac doesn't have a sync facility I have to perform merges with the online tree. So far I have done this 3 or 4 times to update my FTM tree. Every time I carried out a merge the media for each family individual was re-applied. In other words rather than the merge recognising the pre-existence of, say, a census record it just adds another copy so I now have 3 or 4 copies of the same record attached to the members of the tree that had media attached during the first merge. My grandfather for example, has 3 copies of the 1901 census record, plus 3 copies of his birth record, plus 3 copies of his death record and 3 copies of his marriage record. The same has happened where I have photographs. The issue I have found with the census details not being recognised correctly during the merge occurs where I have a tree member that has a number of census references against their residence details. During the merge activity in the left hand box I get one census record detailed, and the right hand box gets the new census record and I am asked to decide which I want as the preferred option. The left hand one is always the same record. In other words when I try to merge a tree member that has records attached from the 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 census' the merge "wizard" will hold the same census record in the left box for each of the others. It asks me to compare each of the above examples with the 1841 record even though my FTM tree record has all 4 already in it. Most frustrating! Another frustration is in the web search view in FTM. When building or adding to my online tree I dutifully went through each of the suggested hints ignoring or accepting them as required only to find that I have to go through the whole process again in FTM. Frustratingly also, some of the hints that appear in FTM seem to be new or different as well as having the originals present. A further irritation is an apparent inconsistency in place names. Leeds, Yorkshire does not appear in some of the drop down lists for example, but does in others. There are other examples of this. I have basically given up with FTM as all the above make the software unusable. What's the point when the online builder is so flexible!
