Author: HJC3HJC3 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.software.ftmmac/152.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Yes, this is a known and VERY ANNOYING bug. The whole Place Name Authority in FTMM2 is a mess. I would do my best to not use it if you can avoid it. You can replace one place name with another when you have duplicates, but it doesn't always work and sometimes causes more problems. Watch it VERY closely and don't accept any changes that don't look correct. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [FTM-MAC] manage places in FTMM2
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: carlossa52 Surnames: Discher, Seibert, Krohn/Kron, Sá Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.software.ftmmac/152/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, I am using FTM for Mac, 2012 edition, under Mac OS X 10.7.3. Many of my ancestors come from Pomerania, part of Germany that today is Poland. Most cities/towns/villages have been renamed after 1945, but I want to keep the old German names, as they appear in the records I have. I have a small database, maybe 150 persons recorded. I created it with Legacy, before I got the Mac. I imported the database into FTMM, and, naturally the "place authority" did not recognize any of those names. So, one by one, I added the coordinates and made the old names "official". Now, when I enter a new person, and then enter a place name already in my database, as soon as I type the first letter, a list of candidate places shows up - very nice! So I select the place name that applies and all is well. Or is it. When looking at the "manage places" dialog, I see a duplicate name with a question mark. (see attached screen shot) If this was a single occurrence, I could simply merge the new place with the old place - but this is going to happen dozens and dozens of times, so a manual merge isn't practical. Did anyone encounter this situation, and if so, how did you deal with it? I have written to FTM support, but the reply takes a week, and they usually don't read the problem description very carefully, so it takes weeks to resolve (maybe?) a problem. Not impressed. Thanks in advance for any comments Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: ilkajb Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.software.ftmmac/113.7.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I guess what I meant was stories and not notes. I managed to replace a note, but a story is not transferrable. There are no details on either the headstones or the documents, it is just a media file. There are just too many items that need to be fixed. I am shelving this software for the moment, will continue with my old tree on Ancestry and will use PAW2U for an occasional GEDCOM backup. It just takes too much time to get it all fixed. I rather spend that time researching. I think the misunderstanding with FTM is that most people think (me included) that it is an extension of ancestry when it is really a companion software. Thank you for your help Russ! Anyone want to buy a copy of FTM?!! :-) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. You can always delete the one that is not synced, or keep it around until you have your issues resolved. Where did you look for the 'transcription'? It should be in the Notes field for that person. (People Workspace, Person View, Notes. (the tab across the screen near the bottom) If they aren't there, look at the Fact, where that image is, and look at the Citation Notes. If it was a picture of a Headstone, and you have that linked to a Burial Fact, look at the numbers on the right side of that Fact line. If there is a number in the 3rd column, then click on the Notes Tab in the Right Hand Panel. The formatting does not come across very cleanly. You can Copy that information, and Paste it into the Notes for that person and clean up the formatting. Then Sync, and the notes should appear better online. I then created a new file on Ancestry and synced to it. I really hate doing this because I think it screws their indexes all up. Now when somebody tries to reference something they find from my tree, it will give them an error that it is no longer available. At least until they re-index. I also find it weird that it wouldn't sync and now it does with no change to my file on FTMM2. The problem is apparently on the Ancestry side. Author: ilkajb Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.software.ftmmac/113.7.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My tree started at ancestry, it has about 600 people and 200 photos most of which are documents. I downloaded my tree as instructed, and did a lot of work on it in FTM (resolve places, remove duplicates, etc). When I wanted to sync it the only option was to upload and link thus creating a new online tree. I am sure that this was my fault somehow, I missed the linking option when downloading it. Now the silly thing is that I have two trees that are not complete on AMT. One with duplicate persons and incorrect places, and another one with missing photos and stories. When adding a media file on AMT and making it a Document/Certificate you get an option Transcription of text in document. That is where I filled out the transcription. I noticed that when all the media files were synced from FTM up to AMT they lost the headstone and document category and became personal photos. I am also looking at about 30 grayed out photos that did not make the sync. I have compacted the tree, changed the caption on the missing photos, but to no avail. The downloaded stories ended up under the Media category in FTM, they open up in my internet browser and the formatting is warbled. When syncing up to AMT the notes/stories did not make it back up. At this point I am trying to decide whether to keep using FTM and fix all the items or ditching it and go back to using just AMT. Author: ilkajb Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.software.ftmmac/113.7/mb.ashx Message Board Post: mmm.. where to start. I cheerfully ignored all the bad reviews I read prior to buying FTM which might have been a mistake. It all started when I could not unlock the program, and ancestry told me to call Nova who was closed at the time. Then I guess I read the instructions wrong (that would be my bad) and ended up with two trees on ancestry.com. Then when downloading my online tree into FTM I found out that all stories were lost. Stories are a big part of my tree so that means redoing them all. Then when syncing back up to my online tree about 20% of the photos did not (and will not) sync. Guess I have to fix that by hand. Additionally the photos, documents and headstones that were downloaded into FTM are now labeled personal photo and all transcripts are gone. I cannot change the photos from personal to anything else either. So for anyone who is happy with ancestry.com and thinks it would make life easier by getting FTM, I would say don't do it. It will take way too much t! ime to fix everything. It is certainly not a well integrated program. You will be spending time fixing bugs that could be spend researching your family tree. Author: ilkajb Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.software.ftmmac/151/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Just purchased FTM, and need to get my ancestry tree downloaded into FTM. I followed some prompts when I first opened the software and thought I was on the way to downloading my online tree, however I do not see a progress bar anywhere and my 'Current Tree' panel remains empty (although it does have the same name as my online tree). It shows 0 people, 0 marriages and a file size of 299 KB, when I click on More... it crashes and I have to restart it. I have clicked on the leaf symbol in the top right corner and selected 'Download from Ancestry'. It shows my tree, says it is linked to a tree in FTM, but under Actions it says 'No action available'. What am I doing wrong here? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. What else? Well if you enjoy crashes then FTM for Mac is the one for you - mine crashes at least 4 times in an hour or more. Adding new/merging from an Ancestry tree is fraught with problems - don't try to add more that 5 people - it WILL crash. If you have Parallels then stick with the PC 2011 version - much much better. What a pile of junk this software is. It crashes at the drop of a hat - it's slow especially when the first 'merge' is used and if you try to merge/add more that 4 or 5 people it crashes. The indexing which was SO good on the PC version is not nearly as good - particularly the descriptions field which I guess many of us use for such things as occupations. The Address field never seems to keep up and is frequently showing a ? against an already entered location even though the location was automatically suggested from the list. I wish I knew how to get a refund! I shall go back to the PC version using my Parallels installation. I definitely NOT recommedt this software. Apparently the idea is that it will cull the damaged portion of the file. After exporting I compared the new file to the original. I noticed it had 80 less people in it. Putting the names list side by side for the two files showed me fairly quickly the missing names. They are names I haven't gone near in quite some time.
