My MO line appeared in Franklin County, MO, no later than the 1820s. I am trying to determine where they came from before that, and it appears to be KY, NC, and/or VA. I suspect they immigrated from Northern Ireland sometime in the 1600s or 1700s. There are several Fryers in VA in the 1600s and many in the Carolinas and Continental Army in the 1700s. According to the genealogy books I read, this early migration, and from Northern Ireland, would almost certainly make them Scotch-Irish, rather than the Irish who were Roman Catholic and largely immigrated to cities in the 1840s. That is, the Scotch-Irish immigrated into Northern Ireland from Scotland, beginning around 1600, they stayed there for one or several generations, and then immigrated to the Colonies. Thus, I believe, the Fryer name is originally Scottish, but from the lowlands.

If not a brother, then likely a cousin as these people tended to migrate in family groups. One source says her father was William Fryer/Frier (b ca 1760) and mother was Mary FANCHER. I realize this post has been up for some time, but thought I'd try contacting you as the timeframe and pattern of movement across the country fit. Sarah married Thomas Carleton III in Bibb, county, AL in AUG 1816. They moved their family to LA in 1855 settling in Winn parish, near a spot called Kysiche (spelled many ways), not far from Louisville, now Gansville, LA. Sarah died after the 1864 CSA tax rolls & before the 1870 census. Thomas, who was a number of years older, died between 1860 - 1864. If this sounds as though Sarah could fit into your line, please send me a message at jjg6808@earthlink.net. Thanks, Janell
