    1. Re: [FRENCH-L] A Joseph FRENCH in SC in 1773

Area identified as Spartanburg, Union Does anyone have the timeline of the county border changes in SC and the border changes between SC and NC? >> _____________ This appears to be Joseph FRENCH who married 1749 Hannah Horn. This couple had a son, Joseph, also. The 1773 date is 24 years later so it is possible that the Joseph in the survey is of the son, but my feeling is that it is the parent. I have a publication which addresses the progression of district/county areas in SC. It is a convoluted process for SC in particular, but it can be done. Pacolet River is the key. Here is what I have -- South Carolina was organized into 7 Districts in 1769 and to nine in 1795 The 9 Districts were expanded to 24 in 1798 Beaufort District- Beaufort Ninety-Six District- Abbeyville, Edgefield, Newberry, Laurens, Spartan burg Washington District- Pendleton, Greenville Pinckney District- Union, York Camden District- Chester, Lancaster, Fairfield, Kershaw, Sumter Cheraws District- Chesterfield, Darlington, Marlborough Georgetown District- Georgetown, Marion Charleston District- Charleston, Colleton Orangeburg District- Orangeburg, Barnwell District became counties in 1868 (after Civil War). In 1773 Camden District existed, but Spartanburg and York Districts were yet to be organized. I haven't found the Pacolet River in NC. It is shown on the map in SC, I have the sensing that it has changed names. Still looking. As a matter of interest there is a French Broad River in NC. Does it have anything to do with the FRENCH family? Best regards, Hugh
