There are two accounts of William FRENCH (above). One is that he died in SC before or as the family was moving to KY about 1795 and the other is that he went to KY and died in TN in 1808. William was one of six known children of Joseph and Hannah (Horn) FRENCH. The others were Lafford, Sarah, Joseph, Simon and Mary. His wife is unknown. William held property in SC until 1795 when he and brother, Simon, sold their land apparently in preparation for removal to KY. It appears that all four brothers went to KY and that Lafford returned to SC. Simon became established in Christian Co., KY. There is little to show that William died in SC except the account in William S Bryan and Robert Rose, "A History of the Pioneer Families of Missouri", p. 329 which is an account of the family of Hugh, son of William FRENCH of SC and his wife, Sally, daughter of Simon FRENCH, who were early settlers in Callaway Co., MO. This book states that William died in SC and his brother, Simon, went to KY about 1795 and took William's family along. It does not address Joseph. It says that William's wife went to Warren Co., TN after William's death. William's brother, Simon, was located in Christian Co., KY and William French, John Denton, Whitefield Elledge, and Joseph Elledge were on the 1797 Warren Co, KY Tax List and later in Wilson Co., TN (tax lists). John DENTON married William's daughter, Jane, presumably in KY. This William died 1808 in Wilson Co., TN (estate sale). John Denton and Hugh FRENCH, as well as the ELLEDGE men, are found next in 1812 in Warren Co., TN. The data that DENTON and his wife, Jane, along with Hugh FRENCH were in Warren Co., TN gives credence to the story that William's widow went to Warren Co., TN after William's death. The problem is where William died. Based on research the evidence seems to indicate that William died in Wilson Co., TN rather than earlier in SC.
