With 5 children under 10, her husband died 1798-1800 timeframe. Lafford's brother William reportedly died in this time period and his wife moved to Warren Co. East Tennessee some time after his death. >> __________ J. This report of William's death and his widows movement to Warren Co., TN is carried in William S. Bryan and Robert Rose, "A History of the Pioneer Families of Missouri," p. 329. It was in a discussion of the origins of Hugh and Sally (French) FRENCH (children of brothers, William and Simon) then in Calloway Co., MO after 1820. I had found a William FRENCH in Warren Co., KY and later in Wilson Co., TN (died 1808) whom I thought to be William, son of Joseph and Hannah (Horn) FRENCH. This appears not to be the case, since Betsy FRENCH, widow, has been found in SC in 1800. The 5 children she is enumerated in the census is consistent with the known minor children I carry in my data. I also carry two adult children, Jane and Hugh. It is known that Jane m. John DENTON, but where is not known (prob. KY). Hugh m. his cousin, Sally, daughter of Simon and Mary (Clark) FRENCH in KY in 1814. Hugh and Sally were in MO by 1820. It now appears that William's widow, Betsy, came to Warren Co., TN with her family including Hugh after the 1800 SC census. Hugh, the oldest son, was by 1812 the head of household as he is listed in the 1812 Tax List, Warren Co., TN living near the DENTONs. It can be assumed that Betsy was resident in his household with the rest of his minor siblings. For Hugh to go to KY and marry Sally in 1814 must assume that Betsy, his mother, probably died, thus releasing him to move away and marry. Unfortunately, no 1810 USC TN exists for the area. Your thoughts. Best regards, Hugh
