This Joseph appears to have remained near the coast. 2) Joseph FRENCH of York Co. Joseph French appears on the census in 1790 & 1800 and in 1810-1820 a Josiah French is cited in York Co. land plats. John French 1793 cited in Camden Dist. WILLIAMS Plat. Joseph FRENCH cited in JONATHAN WHITLY's will 1795, YORK County, HOLSTONS RIVER. SMITH, JOSIAH will mentions Judey FRENCH 1818. FRENCH and the Pacolet River FRENCH families may intermingle as they (or the younger sons) move westward. Their relationship, if any, has not been determined. On Simon's pension application he stated that he lived in Spartanburg SC when he enrolled 1777/1778. Since his first son was reportedly born Feb 1783, he probably was not married yet and was probably still living at home. 1784/Aug 6 Joseph FRENCH land surveyed - NINETY SIX DISTRICT/PACOLET RIVER 1787/01/03 Joseph FRENCH cited on MERRICK Plat - Surveyed for JOSEPH FRENCH on AUGUST 6, 1784 The Joseph FRENCH's shown of Twelve Mile Creek believed to be the Lafford FRENCH of NJ family since 1790 Census shows brothers Simon & William living in the Pendleton District. 1790 Joseph FRENCH on Twelve Mile Creek, 72 acres, NINETY SIX DISTRICT, SC. 1790 Joseph FRENCH, SR. on Twelve Mile Creek, 200 Acres NINETY SIX DISTR, SC. 1790 Census-Pendleton Dist. shows Simon & William FRENCH 1806-1807 Lafferd FRENCH and 2nd wife Elizabeth move to new neighborhood in Spartanburg SC.[Information from Elizabeth's pension application records] 1800 Census-Pendleton Dist. The older Simon & William of 1790 census are gone. A younger William French is shown. He is probably the "over 16 male" shown in the 1790 William French household and is probably his 1st born son who has recently married 1800 Census-Spartanburg SC: Betsey FRENCH, age 26-45, is listed next to Lafford. Appears to be a widow. With 5 children under 10, her husband died 1798-1800 timeframe. Lafford's brother William reportedly died in this time period and his wife moved to Warren Co. East Tennessee some time after his death. Simon FRENCH reportedly moved to Christian Co. KY (on border with TN) Lafford FRENCH hshld has a male 16-26 which is probably his son, William. 1810 Census - Spartanburg SC: Lafford's oldest son William is listed on image #5 and Lafford is listed on image #7. William is probably living in the "old" neighborhood. Betsey FRENCH is not shown in 1810. 1815 Joseph FRENCH mentioned - Twelve Mile Creek/Pendleton Dist. This is probably Lafford's brother Joseph. Since the elder Joseph doesn't appear on any census records, he may have died in 1790, shortly after the Twelve Mile Creek land transaction. <<<<<<<<
