"A History of the Pioneer Families of Missouri," by William S. Bryan and Robert Rose was published in 1876, compiled by Bryan from notes made on "scraps of paper" by Mr. Rose as he rode about the counties and visited with the residents. The information it contains is what elderly children, grandchildren and g grandchildren recalled about the older family members. I believe the path of migration was Kentucky, then into Tennessee and on into Missouri. Why would a widow move with her children? Perhaps because her father and brothers were moving and she went with them. Perhaps she had remarried and moved with her new husband. The following are listed in sequence on the 1790 Census, Pendleton, SC: William French 2 2 5 Isaac Gregory 1 1 2 Cap't Benj. Clark 1 1 3 - 3 [slaves] Henry Clark 2 2 1 - 7 [slaves] and listed later we find Simon 1 1 1 1800 Census - Greenville, SC listed in sequence are Henry Clark Jun., Joseph King, Henry Clark Snr and a few names later we find Isaac Gregory with numerous EARLE family members also listed in Greenville SC. The younger William FRENCH was included in the Pendleton, SC enumeration in 1800. Henry Clark died 1823 in Christian Co., KY --his will mentions daughter Mary FRENCH and was witnessed by Pinkney FRENCH. Names wife Sarah Clark, Other daughters: Susannah Wheeler, Mary Ann Whiteside, Sarah Davis also names Hester Finley, daughter of deceased son Benjamin, and her husband John P. Finley. Other sons: Isaac, John, Henry, -- grandaughter Jane Clark. Administrator, son John. Simon FRENCH settled in Christian Co., KY and some report he married Mary Ann CLARK, b. 1773 in Tryon Co., NC. His first entry on the Christian County KY land grant record is 1799: French, Simon 180 [acres] 3 page 311 3-26-1799 Christian [county] W Fk Red R [West fork of Red River]. Henry's son Isaac CLARK turns up later in Montgomery Co.,MO and other CLARK-FRENCH marriages are mentioned in the Bryon/Rose book. Henry Clark [reported by a Clark researcher] was b. 8 Oct 1732 in Elizabethtown, Essex Co., NJ and in Bryan & Rose we learn the CLARK descendants believed he had immigrated from Scotland. The CLARK family may belong to the group of Scots who went to Ireland and from there immigrated to North America. Did William's widow remove to Warren Co., TN? Perhaps. Perhaps she stayed in Christian Co. KY -- perhaps she married again -- perhaps she died. "Goodspeed, History of Tennessee, Warren County" lists Hughs FRENCH among settlers who settled in Warren County between 1810-1815.
