I have been working on a scan of Chart 31...scans can be a mess & this one certainly proves it. However, I learned a bit since it forced me to read!! The following is from the first part and I am sure it will be helpful. The French charts are a product of several people's work over a few years. Bracketed numbers seem to refer to sources. ........... Records at the LDS Library indicate erroneously that Henry, the immigrant (generation 1), was born in Lesbury, Northumberland, England. Ref [27] says he was born and malTied in Gennany and may have used the name Heinrich. Birth place of Henry in Germany is from Portrait and Biographical Album, Vermilion Co., IL, 1889 Biographical Sketch of Ersom French, son of George French, and grandson of Henry French. This portrait also says that after being married to Elizabeth Ersom (a German name), Henry French left his home in Germany and sought a new field of labor under the banner of freedom, in the land of liberty [27]. It is assumed that the family immigrated to Virginia, then moved to Mercer County, KY, in about 1773 when their second child was born. They lived in the Harrodsburg, KY area. Harrodsburg was established by James Harrod in 1774. The French family were among the first settlers. In 1780 KY was divided into three counties: Jefferson, Fayette, and Lincoln. In 1769 Daniel Boone wintered in a cave there. Daniel was b. in PA and after considerable wandering, settled in NC. The Nield Family Graveyard is located on Mrs. Will Robertson's farm on the Quirk's Run Road in Mercer Co. near the Boyle Co. line, KY. Of the 53 stones, 7 are French: Henry French, 12 Mar 1755 - 11 Aug 1821 Elizabeth French, wife of Henry, 30 Nov 1755 - 22 Mar 1828. Edward French, 14 Mar 1821 - 26 Dec 1849 (who m. Jane Banta on 6 Oct 1842 [1]). This could be the same Jane French mentioned in the KY Census of 1850 as head of house, therefore a widow. Eddie French, son of J.F. and F., 1904 - 1905. Bettie C. French, wife of W.E., 5 Apr 1858 - 21 Aug 1881. John French, 12 Nov 1788 - 18 Apr 1870. Mary A. (French) Ludwick, wife of James M. Ludwick, 2 Jan 1831 - 9 Aug 1896. Mary (Polly) (French) Schmick, 1 Dec 1776 - 12 Nov 1858. Dorothy (Dolly) (French) Vermilion, 27 Aug 1791- 21 May 1858. Buried at the Ludwick Family Cemetery, Quirks Run Road, East of Nevada, Mercer Co. near the Boyle County line, KY: John Ludwick, husband of Susannah French, 14 Oct 1778 4 Jun 1860. Susannah French, :23 Mar 1785 - 13 Aug 1863. Bennett Bull, husband of Christina French, 9 Jan 1768 - 25 Jan 1854. Marriage of Beneo and Christian Bull was 16 Aug 1788 by J. Bailey, Minister. Christina (French) Bennett, 15 Aug 1771 - 8 Ju11852. Mrs. Gerald A. Scheiman (Kaye) of 52133 Prescott Ave., South Bend, IN 46637-3935, tel: 219-272-2893, says she got the information that Henry French was born in Germany from a book written by Henry French's grandson, Ersom French, the son of Henry French, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth. FFA member Thresea R. Hamon [33] found Hemy French's middle name Creagar in "Jefferson County Kentucky Records", Vol. 5, p. 17, by Michael L. Cook, G.G.; and Bettie A. Cummings Cook, C.G., Book Publications, 3318 Wimberg Ave., Evansville, IN 47712. Jacob Creagar (or Reagar) bought property in Louisville from Henry Creagar French of Lincoln Co., KY. Jacob Creagar was also a gunsmith and blacksmith. Reference [35], a cousin to Ref [7], says the Frenches came with George Rogers Clark from the Shenandoah Valley to Kentucky. Samuel was either a brother or father to Henry, and he went to Indiana. In West Liberty, KY, Henry received a land grant of 10,000 acres for being a Gunsmith. He had the rank of Lieutenant. Benjamin French of Woodford Co., KY, was also a brother. ........................ I am wondering if Samuel French is the person we are looking for. I found references to him on One World Tree on Ancestry and naturally without sources!!. I know he was in Orange county IN at the right time. One thing we have to remember is that they traveled together and usually didn't live too far apart. mhh
