There were many Frenchs in New Jersey - many different counties. Sussex County, Morris County, Huntingdon County and what is now Ocean County - to name a few. Also, different spellings - Frensh for one. My 4th great grandfather was Jeremiah L. French who was in Sandyston, Sussex County, NJ in 1778. He served in the Continental Army as a private. Jeremiah married Margarete VanGorder/VanGarden. (Sussex County was formed from part of Morris County). Jeremiah moved to Shamokin, Northumberland Co., PA after being mustered out of the Army. He appears on the 1790 Census as having one son over 16, two sons under sixteen and two daughters under sixteen. The sons were, Moses French, Sr., William French and Jeremiah French. I believe the sisters were Flora and possibly Mary. Jeremiah and his family then remove to Tioga County, New York appearing on the 1800 Census for that county. Jeremiah and Margarete both died in 1846, Erin, Tioga Co., NY. Jeremiah's sons Moses Sr. and William resided in Chemung and Steuben Counties, NY and raised their families in those counties until after their parents' death. At that time, both sons and their families moved to French Hill, Middlebury, Tioga County, PA. I believe that Jeremiah's father was also a Jeremiah, but haven't been able to confirm that. Although many of the New Jersey Frenchs were Quakers, I am disinclined to think that Jeremiah and his family were. Margarete VanGorder/VanGarden was of the Dutch Reformed Church which had been her family's faith for many generations. My grandfather told me that his family had come from New England, moved down the coast then over to PA and NY. Sound familiar to anyone. Some other allied lines are Martin, Shaff, Churchill, VanGorder/VanGarden, Hulett/Hewlett and Monk. Still out there are Shoemaker, Niles, Lyman and Myers to name a few. This is chart 179 French Family Association. Please let me know if any of this sounds familiar to anyone. Marion Scherer
