Keith - I also descend from Matthew and Sarah (Sallie) French, Wolf Creek, Giles County through his grandson St. Clair French who married Mariah Burdette Aug 31, 1830 in Pearisburg, Giles Co. Mariah was dau of Giles and Rachel Burdette and may have been born in 1814 in Monroe Co. VA. Do you have any information on Giles and Mariah Burdette? Also, Jackie - do you have information that the early Frenches (John and Martha and son Matthew) were in MD prior to their being in Westmoreland County, VA in early 1700's? Dot, others I have told me about John being from MD, but I have nothing to prove it. Nor can I prove that the John French in NOrthumberland and Westmoreland records is ours. Can you? What lends credence to MD story is 1850 census for the younger Matthew French in Tazewell County. His mother and sister give MD as birthplace, but his is VA and he's older than his sister. Now if we only knew if/how Matthew the younger is related to Matthew of Giles. Anyone?
