    3. John, I've been told that "my" Pole's brother's H. was for Henderson, but have not personally seen any documentation on that. Hendersons were in Giles/Mercer area too, with many men having earlier served under James or John in militia/military groups of 1700's. Also, these families were big on initials and for use of the second rather than first given names, even the women. My great great grandmother Eliza Jane French Smith was head of household in 1880 Census. She lists herself as EJ Smith, occupation farming. An aunt's name remains a mystery to this day, as even the newspaper notice of her death refers to her only as M.H. wife of Allen Smith. Brothers Napoleon and William H. were pitted against one another in the election of Mercer County's delegate to Secession Convention. Pole won, voted NO on first round, then for postponement and finally YES. There were a number of later Napoleons in Mercer WV area. Also Tazewell and Giles would be good pickin's in your search for yours. Good hunting! Jackie
