Thank you for your list of Frenchs in Otsego County, NY, arising from the question about the French-Wheeler connection. This fits in with some research I have done in the Burgess line. Just after the American Revolution the Burgesses had a farm on the line between Otsego and Herkimer Counties, NY. The eldest son of the family Gideon Burgess (born in 1775) married Sally French, and his sister Dorcus Burgess (born the next year) married James J. Wheeler in Herkimer County. I have found that families moving west often stick together. I think that is the case with the Burgesses and the Frenchs and the Wheelers. I have traced the ancestry of Sally French (I think) from an autograph book which belonged to her daughter. In that autograph book three people contributed poems, all calling themselves "cousins" and all in Plainfield township, Windham County, CT. They are Henry French, Sarah French and Delight French. On a visit to the Union Cemetery in the village of Moosup in Plainfield Township I found and photographed all three of their graves and in the town records I found their parents where Hezekiah and Olive French (also in the Union Cemetery). I think Sally is Hezekiah's sister, based on their children calling each other cousins. This is bolstered by the fact that Gideon Burgess' grandparents are buried in Oneco village in Sterling township, CT - not two miles from Moosup in Plainfield township where the Frenchs lived for three generations. If that is correct, records show Sally French's parents to be John French (born 26 October 1747) and his wife Delight (?) French and her grandparents are Nathaniel French (died before 1757 when his wife remarried) and his wife Sarah (?) French. I feel there must be other siblings of Sally (French) Burgess and Hezekiah French and I am hoping one or more of them will be among the Frenchs you list in Otsego County suggesting family members moved west together (the dates are right for this to be the case). Does anyone on the French list know who the siblings of Sally, and or Hezekiah are? Does anyone on the list know how this French family fits into earlier generations of Frenchs? As to the Wheelers: not only did Dorcus Burgess (the sister-in-law of Sally French) marry James J. Wheeler, but they apparently settled on the Burgess farm on the line between Otsego and Herkimer County, NY. I know this because quite a few Wheelers are buried in the little Burgess family plot on the farm. The Wheelers buried there are as follows: Harvey Wheeler died 11 July 1888, aged 86 years 4 months; James J. Wheeler died 31 March 1841, age 74 years; Dorcus (Burgess) wife of James J. Wheeler died 12 Dec 1855, age 79 years; Jerrauld Wheeler, son of James J. and Dorcus, died 25 July 1844 in his 36th year; Emily daughter of Jerrauld and Pauline Wheeler died 28 July 1850, 23 years, 9 months, 25 days and Harriet daughter of Jerrauld and Pauline Wheeler, died 10 Sept. 1845, 23 years. Do any of these Wheelers relate to the French-Wheelers which initiated the inquiry you responded to with the Frenchs of Otsego County? Does anyone have any further information on this line, or the French, Burgess, Wheeler connection in central NY state? Dean Burgess
