The gist of the article about Margaret the Wife of Hugh French is grounded in the 1682 [signed]will of Daniel Gaines. Daniel named three children, Margaret who from the wording was recently married; Bernard and Mary. John Prosser wrote his will Aug 1673. In it he named his sons John, Samuel, roger and Anthony and sons-in-law [stepsons] Robert and Thomas Goffe. [Will of John Prosser, (Old) Rappahannock Co., Deed and Will Bk 1677-1682 pp 23-24.] John, Samuel and probably roger were John's sons by his first wife Martha [?} Goffe. Anthony Prosser was Margaret's son identified as such in the will of Simon Miller in 1679. Margaret was still married to Simon Miller in 1682 when Daniel Gaines wrote his will. Her son by Prosser was closet to ten years old. Daniel Gaines went to a great deal of trouble to dispose of his land in the event all of his children should die without heirs. If his daughter Margaret had a living child he would have devised his land to him instead of his step grandchild John Smith. We know Anthony Prosser was living then [1682] because he witnessed a deed in 1693. I am sorry to say I do not know who Margaret was. If I had to hazard a guess based on families that they interacted with and the given name Anthony for her first male child, I would say Seale but this is only a guess and not proveable. Descendants of Hugh have tried to link into Daniel Gaines because they think they can get back to Robert Beheathland of Jamestown because of the name Bernard appearing in the family.
