I am seeking parents and/or siblings of Richard FRENCH b. 1817 PA; d. 11 Apr 1870 Du Quoin, Perry Co., IL. Richard FRENCH married Mahala BARR in Tuscarawas Co., OH 23 Sept 1838. She was born c1824 OH; d. c1866 Perry Co., IL. (both are buried at Cudgetown Cemetery, Perry Co. IL). Shortly after they married they moved to Illinois and can be found on both the 1850 & 1860 Census for Perry Co. IL. Richard & Mahala (Barr) FRENCH had 7 sons: Moses FRENCH, b. c1844 OH Samuel FRENCH, b. c1847 OH Laban FRENCH, b. c1849 OH married Marinda N.C. POWELL (m. 7 Oct 1868 IL) Amos (David?) FRENCH, b. c1852 IL m. ?? SHAMEL Alex FRENCH, b. c1855 IL Elias FRENCH, b. c1857 IL married Izora SHAMEL (m. 1882 LaClede Co. MO). Ira FRENCH, b. c1860 IL After the death of his first wife, Richard married Mary (??) LOWRANCE b. c1837 NC (a widow - Marys first husband was Andrew A. LOWRANCE. He was a Union solidier (31 MO Infrantry) killed in the battle between Jonesboro and Atlanta, GA. She had three daughters by her previous marriage to LOWRANCE: Ann, Margaret Susie, and Amanda. Richard and Mary (Lowrance) FRENCH had two additional sons: Luther FRENCH, b. bef.1869; died in 1872 after drinking from a poison well in Peru (Chautauqua Co.), Kansas. Richard Edgar FRENCH, b. 5 Apr 1870 DuQouin, Perry Co. IL; d. 1954, married Henrietta CONNER in 1896 MO. (** this is my grt-grandfather). After the death of Richard FRENCH in 1870, Mary FRENCH moved to Kansas. She later married John WHITTENBERG (m.19 Mar 1877, Benton Co. AR). This family relocated to Madison Co., MO. One child was born to this union: "Nettie" WHITTENBERG, b. 1879 Audrain Co., MO. I have very little information on Richard FRENCH other than he was Pennsylvania-Dutch. I suspect that he could be german. Any clue as to his family previous would be greatly appreciated. There were several FRENCH families living in Tuscarawas Co., OH early on - Moses FRENCH, Richard FRENCH, & Alex FRENCH - all names he gave to his sons. Thank you in advance.
