New to this List. Found this census listing during my research on the HENLEY line. Entries in brackets added by me. 1860 Census. Twp. 15, Range 9, Attala Co., MS. Family 419. [Attala Co. is in central Mississippi.] Washington French 51 SC [No idea who he was.] Ellener French 39 MS [Wife? Was she a Henley??] Caleb Henley 15 MS [our Caleb? age fits perfectly.] Licurgus Henley 12 MS [Brother of Caleb?] Elizabeth Henley 8 MS Missouri Henley 7[?] MS William I.G. W. French 3 MS. [Suggests that Washington and Ellener had recently married.] Who was this Washington FRENCH? Can't seem to find him in other censuses. Did he marry a HENLEY? Trying to identify parents of Caleb. Was there a FRENCH-HENLEY connection? Especially in Mississippi. Any info greatly appreciated. Dave Anderson Arizona
Hi, I am in south east england, bottom right hand corner, about 50 miles from London and 5 miles from Canterbury. Somerset is further south west from London. about 175 miles from us. My French family are all - as far as I have found - in London, they were workers in the London docks - no rich relations for me! regards, Carol
Hi Carol, Welcome to the French list. You may have been a member for a while, but the list becomes a bit inactive once in a while. If you have a male cousin who carries the FRENCH surname, we would love to have you submit his DNA to our French Y-DNA Project. We have a lot more to post, but I am waiting for the Ancestor Trees. http://small-stuff.com/FRENCH/DNA/index.htm We are recruiting donations to the French Project which funds would be used to test lines documented to be from the British Isles and voted on by committee. Dear Rita, Just saw your notice, and I have not gotten my family back to Enland as yet, but I believe that is where we originated from. My GG Grandfather Jeremiah French and GG Grandmother Lydia Smith were married in Athens County, Ohio April 19, 1837. Jeremiah French was born approximately in 1814, and I believe that was probably in England. The person who suggested this French family has not been able to link Jeremiah French to the French family that is listed on the 1830 Census, Homer Township, Athens County OH as yet, but she and I are working to do so. Note that this family is William and Ione French possibly born in Merriott, Somerset, England. Naturally I have no contacts in England that can help me, but thought I'd see if you have any siblings to the French family you are working on. It would be great if we could link these families together. I know very little about Enland so if you are from the south part and this area is in the north, east, or west; just have a good laugh with me! I have lots of BRICK walls at this point. Is anyone researching the Joseph French family seen in the 1850 Census of Miami, OH. Joseph French, Brick Maker age 51 or 57 born PA wife Margaret, age 48 born PA son Joseph age 15 born OH son John age 14 born OH daughter Lavina age 12 born OH daughter Susannah age 10 born OH My Joseph French born about 1834 is a possible fit for this family, however my Joseph listed his parents as born OH until 1930 and states his father from West Virginia, mother from OH. My Joseph married Sarah Jane Hatfield 1858 in Hancock County, no witness so I assume they eloped and are next seen in 1860 in Wood County, OH near Sarah's father John Sherrod Hatfield. Joseph and Sarah have 4 children and then relocate by 1870 to Jasper County, IA by 1880 they and completed family are living in Bolckow, MO until about 1900 and are in Kansas City, KS until his death after 1930. Hi Julia, Sorry! I thought I was the only who worked that late. And, it (and more) is there now. Thank you. Guess I was just anxious when I saw your posting. Again, thank you for yours and David's efforts. We all appreciate them and hope they eventually will answer questions or point us in the correct direction(s). Hi Jon, I will answer one question at a time as I will have to take a look to see about what you are asking. As for the first question, It was 2 a.m. when I quit working on the DNA pages and didn't get the Tree finished for Group 6. It is there now and you may have to "Reload" the page to see it. http://small-stuff.com/FRENCH/DNA/results.htm Julia In a message dated 10/29/2006 12:17:50 PM Central Standard Time, ccreview@grics.net writes: Julia, I'm curious why DNA Test Group 6 is the only one with no documented ancestors.
Julia, I'm curious why DNA Test Group 6 is the only one with no documented ancestors. Did not those persons testing for Jacob, Samuel and William have any documentation showing how they are related to these three persons? I'm also curious about he data. I notice there apparently, if I understand correctly, one mutation in DYS 393 between these three individuals who comprise Group 6. Is that correct? And, of course, what does it mean? I also notice, for example, there are several mutations between William French in Group 6 and John French in Group 1. But, there are many DYS groupings that share the same number. Does this correspond to a relationship between the two? And, has anyone done a definitive study on the persons in the various groups? Or, is that part of the overall project? I can trace my French ancestors to William in Group 6, but I am not a male French, so cannot be tested. As far as I know, I only have one male French surviving and he apparently is unwilling to take the test. Unusual of a retired college professor, I would think, but . . . I am trying to have him convinced to join the project. He is in his 80s, so am not sure why the reluctance. Thank you. Joan, The Y-DNA is passed from father to son, to son, forever. A test for the French surname requires a male who has the surname of French. A test for a Farnsworth, requires a male who has that surname. The only time the two would match would be if an adoption had occurred in one of the lines that changed their surname.
