I'll be posting the entire list of charts very soon. As far as I know, all the Essex families emigrated to America. The only French family I have information on in Australia (city of Hamilton) was from Galway, Ireland. Hi Sue, I'm working on Chart #31 right now and will post it to the FFA website. I'll let the French List know when that is done. I'm just picking charts at random to translate from the Adobe FrameMaker desktop publishing program which they are in now (this program no longer exists) into a web html format. Since there are 180+ charts, this process will take awhile, but I'll announce everytime I add a chart. Thank you for your patience. After viewing early maps of the PA, OH and WV boarders, I am leaning that this is the correct Joseph French family, as specially as Hancock, OH appears to boarder PA for the 1800 map, and is the same county inwhich my Sarah J Hatfield and Joseph French where married. jfrench <jfrench1@earthlink.net> wrote: Interesting -- according to the census indices, the only Joseph French in the correct age group living in OH in 1850 is a Joseph French, age 15, living with Joseph French, brick maker, age 51 and wife, Margaret, 48. Dianna, I looked high and low for my printout of the source about Jacob being Henry French's brother. I thought I had seen a website of another family's genealogy that said something about Jacob and Henry French owning a gunsmith or blacksmith shop in KY. I print almost everything that I find online, but apparently not this page. But then I received a copy of the French Family Association Chart #31, and similar information was listed on that chart as follows: "1.6* JACOB FRENCH, b. Bardstown, Nelson Co., KY [36], m. Rebecca Paul (Paul is a German name) on 20 Apr 1773 [27] in Woodstock, Shenandoah Valley, VA [35]. He d. 1784 in Jefferson Co., KY [35] [36]. Jacob was a German Gunsmith along with his brother, Henry, and Jacob Reagar, all of whom received a lot of land. The name Reagar may have been Creagar and it may be Irish, English, or German. Jacob lived in Bardstown, Nelson Co., KY. Rebecca Paul was b. ca. 1752 in PA, d. 1814 in LaRue Co., KY [36]. She was the dau. of Michael and Ann (Parker) Paul. In 1778 in Chester Co., PA were John Paul and Benjamin Paul and Nathaniel Porter, who took oaths of allegiance [36] -could be part of this family. Jacob's widow, Rebecca Paul, m. Kentucky became the 15th state on June 1, 1792. Never a territory, it was part of Virginia until statehood. Dear Listers, I have a Joseph French, b. Apr 1827 in ?, m. 15 Feb 1862 in Thomson, IL to Nancy Whitney b. 5 Oct 1825 Java Village, NY; d. 27 July 1927 (aged 101, 9 mos. 22 days!!!) in Thomson, IL. This Joseph French died 12 Mar 1902 in Thomson, IL. They had three children: William (Willie) died young; Melvin (Mellie) died young; and Louisa. I have no information on Joseph French's birthplace or his parentage. Have some indication he may have been from southern Illinois, Kentucky or Davenport, Iowa, but nothing concrete. Don't know if this helps anyone or not, but I'll add it to the mix. He does not appear related to my great-great-grandfather Asa Mason French, b. 25 Nov 1801, Windsor County, Vermont. Hope this adds to growing stack of information on the various Joseph Frenches and hopefully they all get identified. I have been looking at this same family as a possible match. In prior census, Joseph indicates his parents as from OH, it is not until the 1900 Census he states his father as from West Virginia. The same inf is tated for 1910 in 1920 it is recorded as unknown. Although Joseph and Sarah had 9 children, I have yet to find a living male French. jfrench <jfrench1@earthlink.net> wrote: Interesting -- according to the census indices, the only Joseph French in the correct age group living in OH in 1850 is a Joseph French, age 15, living with Joseph French, brick maker, age 51 and wife, Margaret, 48. Parents are Joseph French and Sarah J Hatfield French and seen living together as family for the 1900 Census in Kansas City, KS. Robert was 22 at time of Census. Christopher S Scott
Listed from the 1900 Census as boarder Keonp French age 20 born abt 1880 in KS living in the home of my Joseph French and Sarah J Hatfield French. First name possible miss spelling from census taker. Looking for connection or possible leads for the parentage of my Joseph Scott.
Joseph listed his father born West Virginia ( I assume then just Virginia) and mother born in OH. Does anyone have a Joseph French unaccounted for? He married Sarah J Hatfield in Hancock, OH in 1858 with no witness, and niether families are located as well. It appears as they eloped as he 24, and she 16. By 1860 they are seen in Wood County, OH near Sarah's father John Sherrod Hatfield and stepmother Joanna Bonell (Sarah's mother Caroline McMillen born 1824 in Williamsburg, Clermont, OH and died abt 1846 in Wood County, OH) 1870 Joseph and Sarah and growing family are seen in Jasper County, IA, 1880 indicates the family now in Bolckow, Andrew County, MO and by 1900 Joseph and Sarah are living in Kansas City, KS until thier deaths before 1910 (Sarah) and after 1920 for Joseph's.
