    1. Re: [FRENCH] French Family Association
    2. Don French
    3. Ooops, perhaps a confusing word?? My use of the word "document" refers to the fact that I have it written in my genealogical program, as it was provided to me by another, as is most of my information or documentation. By this I don't mean to imply that it is gospel or is proven fact. It is what it is, information that I have included in my research that is written in pencil and awaits further confirmation or editing. I have the same information as you concerning Richard and his encounter with a neighbor's maid, his leaving, remarrying, having additional children, etc. and it is written in pencil so it can be easily corrected, modified or changed in any manner necessary to bring it into line with new information that is discovered. I have heard that the William FRENCH that took in Joseph & Samuel was either his uncle or god-father but of that I have no proof other than "what has been said" and like you I have never "found" this William. So if I am asked or I voluntarily give out information, it is the best I have been able to discover and it is always in a state of flux or change as necessary. Don -----Original Message----- From: french-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:french-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Mara French Sent: Thursday, January 25, 2007 1:33 PM To: french@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [FRENCH] French Family Association Here's my take on the Danforths. Richard owned land in Cambridge adjacent to the Danforth land (he bought it from the Danforths). The Danforths had a daughter named Martha. I've never found a legal document saying that Richard's wife (Martha) had the surname Danforth, although it is highly probable. Then, in about 1654 (a year after Samuel of my line was born), Richard had an encounter with his neighbor Richard Hildreth's maid, Jane Evans, after chasing her on horseback. He was put in jail, had to sell his land for less than he bought it for, and then 3 years later he shows up living in Marshfield, MA, in a house that he had built and which still stands today (I was in it). His son Samuel was adopted by William French of Billerica (I still don't know the relationship of William and Richard but they are a generation apart). His other son, Joseph, lived with someone in Concord/Belford, MA. These two sons did not continue to live with Martha nor the Danforth family. After Richard shows up married to "a" Martha in Marshfield, he has 2 more children, John and Elizabeth. His first 2 children didn't join him, but they knew about each other as witnessed in John's will. In it he mentions his brother Joseph of Concord. I have documents showing that this Martha was a Beare. The Beare family is from Plymouth just south of Marshfield and they never were in the Cambridge area. I'd be interested in the document that shows Martha Danforth's death date. There are many unanswered questions in this line for which I'd like documented proof. Please let me know. 3. Jon, there are various legal land documents with both Richard and William's name on them together in MA. Many book records say that Richard was William's nephew, but no proof. 3. Here's my take on the Danforths. 3. Don, According to Henry Hazen's book History of Billerica, MA, Jonathan Danforth was born in Framlingham, in High Suffolk, England, 1627-8, Feb. 29. It says his mother died in 1629. It just seems as though there probably would be a relationship between the two since they both ended up in Billerica early in its history. I guess I was wondering if your Martha was a sister of Jonathan, and, of course, if there is a connection between your Richard French and the other French families who lived in Billerica at the same time. Again, I'm guessing there is, but have no definitive proof. Obviously, I like to follow William French (1) back to his parentage in England and I am hoping someone who sees the French list may have the information. I guess we'll just have to keep hunting. 3. Hi Jon, I have to agree on all points, I'm sure both the FRENCH and DANFORTH people are related, but when and how is, at this time, pure conjecture. So like so many others, including you, I will wait and occasionally ponder. I'll keep busy with many other genealogical studies and projects and I'm sure one day the answer will be forthcoming. Good hunting, Don -----Original Message----- From: french-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:french-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jonathan Whitney Sent: Thursday, January 25, 2007 11:32 AM To: french@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [FRENCH] French Family Association Don, According to Henry Hazen's book History of Billerica, MA, Jonathan Danforth was born in Framlingham, in High Suffolk, England, 1627-8, Feb. Rebecca FRENCH in Virginia -----Original Message----- From: marafrench@mindspring.com To: french@rootsweb.com Sent: Thu, 25 Jan 2007 11:05 AM Subject: Re: [FRENCH] French Family Association Hi Don, that is my exact line also. Richard had 2 more children, John and Elizabeth, and it was thru John's death certificate in Canada that I found out more information. Of course I'd like to work on that line soon, but I'm trying to tackle some of the smaller charts first so I get the hang of converting a desktop publishing file to an html file with a readable design. Unfortunately I won't have time in my lifetime to enter all the data into GEDCOM files. They will be more or less in a Word file and show descendants of only the surname French. The female lines can be found under the surname of their husband. Thanks for your email. 3. I've only documented two DANFORTH surnames. The first is Martha who was b. abt. 1629, married Richard FRENCH abt. 1648, and they had two children, Joseph & Samuel. Martha died abt 1659 in Billerica, Middlesex Co. Mass. The second is Rhoda, who was born 22 Apr 1769 in Dunstable, Middlesex Co., Mass., married Theodore FRENCH abt. 1781 in Dunstable, they had 5 kids, Rhoda, Joseph, Rebecca, Theodore & Jacob. Rhoda d. 20 May 1790 in Dunstable. I have no information as to whether the two ladies are related, nor who their parents or any siblings were. 3. Hi Don, that is my exact line also. 3. Pamela, I am sorry I have no information for you. I have only some of the early lines (1600s) in England who came to America.
