Dear French families, I am the great great grandson of Daniel and Harriett (nee Beams) French who emigrated to Tasmania Australia, from North Leigh Oxfordshire. I would love to make contact with any living descendants of this line. My furtherest research back for the French line is as follows: a) Daniel French (circa 1771-1849) married Sarah Dix (circa 1771-1816) children were Ann French ( circa 1802) who married Thomas Osier - I would love to find out more about this line did they leave England??; and John French (circa 1800 - 1873). b) John French (circa 1800 - 1873) married Sarah Smith ( circa 1809 - 1836) children were Ann French (1828 - ), Daniel French (1832 - 1921) and George French (circa 1834 - ). John married a second time to Elizabeth Brown. c) Daniel French (1832 - 1921) [My great great grandfather who emigrated to Tasmania Australia] married Harriett Beams (1833 - 1910). They had 10 children, alll born in Tasmania: James William, Sarah Ann, John George, Caroline, Harriett, John William, Daniel, Mary Ann, Lionel george, Florence Lavinia. d) My great grandfather was Daniel French. I( would love to hear from anyone in England or elsewhere. I am trying to organise for someone in the French line to get a DNA done. Mr. Kim O'Brien , Tasmania, Australia. Hi all As there is much discussion about French's at the moment i will have another go at seing if anyone has any info on my dead end. My great great grandmother Caroline French married Samuel Mayhew. Based on the birth of their children this is likely to have been in London in the early 1840's. I guess therefore she was born in the period 1815 - 1825. Subsequently Samuel and at least 3 of their children emigrated to Australia in 1849. I have doubts as to whether Caroline came out - i think she stayed in England with another 2 or 3 of the children of the marriage. Anybody got any Caroline French''s anywhere in Britain that might fit ? happy hunting Peter ----- Original Message ----- From: <missuspjn@vic.chariot.net.au> To: <french@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 26, 2007 11:14 AM Subject: Re: [FRENCH] French Family Association > Good Morning Mara....on this Australia Day > Thank you for your message..... > I will expand on our family here, in the hope that maybe a lister has > interest in this line: > > I understand that Mary Ann French born 1813 Witham, Essex had three little > Frenches..Mary 1934, James 1836 and Jane 1939 > James French [1836] and Maria Shilley [Abt 1839] had: > James 1864 Woolwich, Henry 1865 Woolwich, Louiza 1867 Plumstead, William > 1869 Plumstead, Elizabeth Ann 1873 Plumstead, Charles 1875 Bethnal Green and > Wallace 1878 Plumbstead > My line is through Elizabth Ann who married George Lepard, their daughter > Maud Elizabeth married John Henderson Jackson and emigrated to Australia > The remainder of this line is unknown... > I wonder if they emigrated to the US??????? > > Best Wishes > pamela > > > > Mara French writes: > > > Pamela, I am sorry I have no information for you. What do you already know about him? Do you have him in the 1900-1930 censuses? Have you tried the Social Security Death Index and a possible SS application? (That would likely give his parents' names.) Have you sent for a death certificate? I also have a George W. French from New York, but mine was born 1833-1834. I believe I have come across a George W. French born 1881while searching at www.google.com. Give it a try. Use the Advanced Search and enter George W. French as a phrase. You might try entering 1881 on the top line. Our Georges may have a connection, but no evidence at this time. Kim, Though we are away from home and our notes at the moment, I believe there was a Daniel Tilton French born 21 August 1771 in Stratham, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. I do not know who he married but his father ought to be Thomas French, born 14 March 1739 in Stratham and his mother Anna Tilton born 13 February 1748. Hope this helps, we expect to be home shortly where I might be able to check further should we hear from you. Best regards, Lew Marquardt

Jonothan Whitney wrote asking for more information on my French family. When the French family came to Vermont, they settled in Chittenden, VT. Ezra was born in 1800 in VT and married Margaret Woodward. Their son, Daniel French was born in 1828 and appears in St. Lawrence County, NY in the 1860 census. Daniel was married to a Jane M., who was born in 1827. Daniel and Jane also appear in the 1880 census in Essex County, NY, and Ezra is living with them at the age of 80. In this census he states that his father and mother were born in Mass. Is there anything more I can add? Mildred in WI
Jonathan - William French (born between 19nov1602 and 5june1603; immigrated USA 1635; died 20nov1681, Billerica, MA age 78) is my paternal ggg, ggg, gggrandfather. We are cousins. My lineage is William, John, William ... Would you be interested in sharing information? Scott French ----- Original Message ----- From: Jonathan Whitney To: french@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, January 26, 2007 1:42 PM Subject: Re: [FRENCH] French Family in VT Mildred, You don't give us much information to go on. Do you know Ezra's father's name or where Ezra was born? My Frenches went from Billerica, MA, to Cambridge, VT, before migrating to northwest Illinois. My 2nd great-grandfather Asa Mason French was born in Cambridge, but his father Jacob was born in Billerica in 1771. His grandfather (Jacob's father) was also named Jacob and had a son Ezra who was born in Billerica in 1746. I'm sure this is not your Ezra, but the families (at least my French family) tended to repeat the names in succeeding generations. Henry Hazen's book "History of Billerica" is my source. I do not know if it is completely accurate, but it is so far the best information I have. I have not checked the census records. The book shows that this Ezra died a few days after birth, but that does not mean that one or another of is siblings may have moved to VT and continued the name usage. I guess what I'm suggesting is that Billerica, MA, may be a good starting point for you in your search. I looked through the book quickly, but didn't find anything, but other records, births, deaths, census, etc. may yield the information you are seeking. Hazen's book is available through Higginson Book Company of Salem, MA, or through the Billerica Historical Society's web site. Good luck in your search. RE:Today's Topics: 1. Some French's in Mass., Vt., and Ind. (the cooks) Message: Thanks Marie I am trying to find more info on this line as I am descended from The John FRENCH in Braintree born in Cannot find this place in Scotland A real brickwall Lorri http://www.rootsweb.com/~vermont/WashingtonCoHistory12.htmEphraim Eddy FRENCH. [Sketch furnished by a friend.] -- The progenitor of the FRENCH family in America was John FRENCH, born in 1612, who came from Thorndic, Scotland, to the Massachusetts colony, when about twenty years of age, and in 1639 was admitted as a freeman in Dorchester. He removed to Braintree in 1648, and from him have descended most of the name in New England. They are generally people of marked individuality. Samuel FRENCH, a native of Salisbury, Mass., born January 29, 1789, married Lydia SAMPSON, born at Woodstock, Vt., December 2, 1779. Samuel emigrated to Vermont when a boy, with a Mr. BAKER, and engaged in felling trees, clearing land, and other pioneer work. After his marriage he located on a wild lot in Washington, and in time his labors were successful in making a comfortable home for himself and wife and their four sons and three daughters, -- Deborah, married John PAINE; Lucy (deceased), married Alfred BROWNING; Leander (deceased); Ephraim E.; Lydia (deceased); Philona (deceased), married Addison RIPLEY; Samuel, Jr., died young. Mr. FRENCH was a hard working farmer, and a good and useful citizen. He died in 1850. Ephraim Eddy FRENCH, of Barre, son of Samuel and Lydia (SAMPSON) FRENCH, was born in Washington, Orange county, Vt., January 31, 1814. Ephraim had but the educational advantages of the common schools of Barre, where his parents had removed when he was four years old. His surroundings-those of a farmer boy of three-quarters of a century ago could not restrain or limit his desire for a broader culture, and while at work in the fields his book was his companion; every leisure moment was given to study, and he fitted himself for a teacher, which avocation he pursued successfully for six winters in Barre and vicinity. He continued tilling the soil, however, until he was twenty-three, when, his health being much impaired, he was forced to relinquish this occupation. In the spring of 1838 he commenced the study of law with Newell KINSMAN, Esq., in Barre, and, after one year under his tuition, was taken into partnership by Mr. KINSMAN, and at the September term of the County Court, 1841, Mr. FRENCH was admitted to the bar, and in 1844 as a practitioner in the Supreme Court. He continued as a law partner with Mr. KINSMAN five years, then opened an office for himself, and soon had a lame and lucrative business, mostly in Orange and Washington counties. --------------------------------- Finding fabulous fares is fun. Mildred, You don't give us much information to go on. My FRENCH family came from Mass. to Chittenden County, VT. The one born in 1800 in VT was Ezra French, who married Margaret Woodward. I can't seem to go back any farther than that, but it does say in one of the censuses that Ezra French's father was born in Mass. Does anyone have this same family line? Mildred in WI
Hi Mara, I have read that Joseph FRENCH was born in Marshfield, Plymouth Co. MA in several GEDCOM files with this source: Title: Families of Cavendish, Vol 3 Author: Linda Margaret Farr Welch/Cavendish Historical Society - Cavendish, VT Note: The Early Settlers of the Black River Valley in Windsor County, Vermont. A Social and Genealogical History Source Media Type: Book Page: 196 And also have seen the Latter Day Saints, Family History Library listed as a source also. Here's a website of Richard French who lists his birthplace as Marshfield or Cambridge, MA http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~frenchrl86/ Where do you have him born? Cambridge? I don't have it written in stone of course, as Don was saying, I use pencil! Are you descended from this line also? Nancy Where did you get the data that Joseph was born in Marshfield?
