Back to chart # 31 - to Dianna Rose, you state that Samuel French was definitely Henry's brother, and you said a deposition attested to by Hugh McGary in the Mercer Circuit Court Records. I have looked at the Mercer County records, can't seem to find it. Would appreciate an address, or copy of this document. Thanks, S.Scott
Hi All, I recently saw an interesting show on pbs about Australia and how it was populated by both men and women. They spoke of a website that listed the names of indentured servants both to America and Australia. It is quite interesting. Here is what I found on the French surname for America. Continuing the thread from: [FRENCH] George W. French - Charlie - Since we have a 24/25 y-chromosome allele marker match, we have a reasonably recent common ancestor. Perhaps that ancestor is JACOB FRENCH ((((Birth: ABT. 1553 in Assington, Suffolk, England - Death: 11 NOV 1615 in Assington, Suffolk, England )))), father of THOMAS FRENCH OF IPSWICH, MA, FFA CHART #1. My lineage is proven to WILLIAM FRENCH OF BILLERICA, FFA CHART #2, probably the grandson of JACOB OF ASSINGTON. Perhaps we connect there. Why? 1) You and I have the 24/25 marker match 2) You and Jim have a 25/25 marker match Jim's lineage is proven to JACOB FRENCH and is the author of the THOMAS FRENCH, FFA CHART #1 page located here: ((((http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=simplicity&id=I03694)))) 3) Jim and I have a 24/25 marker match 4) My lineage and Jim's lineage do not intesect before JACOB. 5) "I've been to Bures St. Mary which is just over the county line from Assington. Bures is in Essex and Assington is in Suffolk. There's a bridge and river between the two - the bridge is a small walking bridge, so you can easily see that these two French families [William and jacob] were probably connected. Bury St. Edmonds is north of this area and in Suffolk unty." -Mara French ( http://www.frenchfamilyassoc.com/FFA/) 6) More... Do you know Ezra's father's name or where Ezra was born? My Frenches went from Billerica, MA, to Cambridge, VT, before migrating to northwest Illinois. My 2nd great-grandfather Asa Mason French was born in Cambridge, but his father Jacob was born in Billerica in 1771. His grandfather (Jacob's father) was also named Jacob and had a son Ezra who was born in Billerica in 1746. I'm sure this is not your Ezra, but the families (at least my French family) tended to repeat the names in succeeding generations. Henry Hazen's book "History of Billerica" is my source. I do not know if it is completely accurate, but it is so far the best information I have. I have not checked the census records. The book shows that this Ezra died a few days after birth, but that does not mean that one or another of is siblings may have moved to VT and continued the name usage. I guess what I'm suggesting is that Billerica, MA, may be a good starting point for you in your search. I looked through the book quickly, but didn't find anything, but other records, births, deaths, census, etc. may yield the information you are seeking. Hazen's book is available through Higginson Book Company of Salem, MA, or through the Billerica Historical Society's web site. Good luck in your search. Hi Dave, Do you have any record of Samuel French, b. 1826. Born in PA per 1870 census; born in WV per 1880 census. Some of his children were born in Greene Co., PA. His wife was Mary Ann Goode, b. 1838 in PA. I'm trying to find his parents. He is my wife's g-grandfather. Thanks. Hi: I am descended from Capt. James French - I have been trying to get back another generation. Below is some info from a family bible. James French fought in Delancey's Regiment in the American Revolution and was given land in New Brunswick, Canada. I have a muster role that states he was living in Pennsylvania when the war broke out (c. 1775). Heather in B.C. Canada Van Horne Family Bible James French b. Oct. 21, 1748, d. Aug 17, 1820 had following Children: William French b. 9 June 1770, died 6 Oct. 1820 Prudence French b. 9 June 1772 d. 11 Oct. 1800 Charity French b. 8 June 1775 died 22 Nov. 1838, married John VanHorne Feb 15/1822. John VanHorne b. 30 June 1782, d. april 1857; Martha Ann French b. 22 January 1778, died Jan 19 1845 married Jacob Brown --------------------------------- Never miss an email again! Yahoo! Well, the Mary Clark who married Aaron French is unrelated, AFAIK, to the Clarks who married two of their children. Mary, as I assume you know, was from Ireland and her parents James and Agnes (Galbraith) Clark were b Scotland. I have a couple more generations, though if you have anything before the James Clark b about 1656 I'd be interested. Anyway the Isaac Clark who married Deborah French and the John Clark, Sr. who married Mary French were both sons of Samuel Clark and Rachel. He was b about 1740 and d 1802 in Washington Co., PA Samuel Clark was the son of Isaac Clark b 1712 in Elizabethtown, Essex Co., NJ and he the son of another Samuel Clark b 1673 Southhampton, Sussex Co., NY and he the son of the immigrant Richard Clarke b about 1640 Bradwell, Suffolk, England. Going back in England I show a Richard and a Thomas Clarke b about 1592. Now I'm just relying on various on-line trees for most of this, but that's my best analysis of what I've found. The Samuel b about 1740 is easy to locate as he had a big farm in Amwell Twp., Washingon Co., PA. This wasn't far from my Evans ancestor David Evans, Sr. And at least Aaron French, Jr lived just across the Ten-mile Creek in Greene Co., PA. Aaron French, Jr., John Clark, Sr. and Washington Evans (son of David) all three moved to Monroe Twp., Licking Co., OH. John's daughter Eunice married Washington's son "Elder" John Evans and that's my line. If you want more, let me know. That's very cool! I'm looking forward to when Chart 20 is available. Meanwhile I'll try to figure out just how the charts are done and perhaps I can add some material to Chart 20 at that point. Hi List Members, The French Family Association website has been renovated. I've added the list of 188+ charts, but so far only charts 1, 31, and 184 are linked to the site. More to come as I convert them from the Adobe FrameMaker Desktop publishing system into html web-readable files. There are several steps needed in doing that, so please be patient. Besides that, I'm verifying old information from 10 years ago since these charts haven't been updated in that period of time. You may need to reload the page incase the old page still shows up. My George Will French was born somewhere in New York ca 1833-1834. He was in Fayette, Wisconsin in May of 1859, and in McHenry County, Illinois in August of 1862 when he enlisted for the Civil War. I have no information on his parents or where in New York he was from. Hi Morgana, No, I live in Ohio. I know the name Sooy is very prominent in N.J. How are you related? Betty
Charles - Are you the Charles French that has a 24/25 y-chromosome allele marker match with me? If yes then where does George fit into your lineage? If not then you should contact Charles. I have an older email address (not the same as yours but it has been while since we corresponded) and a mailing address for him. He has a connection to Cayuga, Chemung and Cayuga Counties in NY. And, of course, the 24/25 marker match with me which is proven to WILLIAM FRENCH OF BILLERICA. And I am quite certain William of Billerica is a grandson of Jacob FRENCH - b. about 1555, probably in Suffolk or Essex, England; bur. Nov. 11, 1615, Assington, Suffolk, England. Hi Charles, We can probably help you, but we need you to let us know what you already have. Research takes a lot of time, and we don't want to waste valuable time looking for information you already have. Do you have any census records for George? I can help with these if you don't have them. Have you contacted the New York Dept of Vital Statistics for his death certificate. http://www.health.state.ny.us/vital_records/ Did you try the search on google that I recommended? Have you searched at www.familysearch.com? At http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/? What is your source for his dates of birth and death and place of death? Be sure and write down the source of every piece of information you find. This is VERY important! Do you know his middle name? I found one source (assuming it is dependable) that gives his name as George Washington French. If that is correct, try a google search for the phrase "George Washington French." There will be more than one person with this name. Go to www.rootsweb.com, Message Boards, French, and then do a search for "Chemung." This will very likely be the same family. This looks VERY promising: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/FRENCH/1998-04/0891776704 http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/FRENCH/2001-05/0989977453 Is this your grandfather?
