I have had some VERY NASTY emails about sending out the name of a web site for the 1851 census to down load free. I am new to this list and thought I was HELPING. I did not mean to upset anybody. I have always found people on rootsweb lists to be very helpful so I am very upset when I try to help and people are so nasty, maybe people should stop and think before they attack people in this way. Again a I am very sorry to have upset everybody. Claire Grant
Here is a web site with all the 1851 census's on it but you have to down load them and it takes some time. http://web.ukonline.co.uk/sheila.jones/ceninfo.htm All the best Claire Grant
Claire The site probably won't help me much but I think it is great if anyone can be helped in their search. I know people get upset when things are posted that doesn't pertain to their lines, but that is silly. I printed off the URL who knows what I will run into in the future. Thank you for sharing! Jackie
Yea for Claire, I am with all the others , If the download can help anyone , fine with me. Bill French

>From the quartery Journal of the New York State Historical Association - New York History, Volume LVI Number 1, January 1975, in an article entitled: The Minisink Grant: Partnerships, Patents, and Processing Fees in Eighteenth Century New York comes the following: page 43 The Minisink patent was granted to twenty-three proprietors in 1704. The grant embraced a tract of approximately 170 square miles on the boundary between New York and New Jerey, twenty miles west of the Hudson River in Orange and Ulster Counties. The footnote lists several of the men, one of whom was a Philip French. The patent was issued on August 28th, 1704. continuing ....Stephen DeLancey and Philip French served in the assembly prior to or during this period (referring to Cornbury's council). The article is rather lengthy and quite detailed. The only mention of Philip French that I have seen in the article is the two items listed above. For the New Jersey French researchers - this Minisink patent included land that was claimed by New York and New Jersey. Hope this helps someone. Marion Scherer

Hello. I am brand new to this list and to an attempt to trace my mother's family. I am in possession of a family tree that has no dates on it. Beginning with the oldest information, the French line is as follows: William French m. Elizabeth Francis French Sr. Francis French Jr. m. Anna Bowers Israel French m. Sarah Loveland David French Sr. m. Hanna Lois Lines David French Jr. m. Mary Anna Johnson John Jay French m. Sally Munson David French III (b.4/7/1827) m. Amelia Guedry David French III was my GGGrandfather. There is a statement that David III was born in Shawingump Stop, NY, thought to be called Schenectady now. I haven't yet confirmed this. Any information on this line of Frenches will be very appreciated. Kathleen
Under the Lost and Found Category at cyndislist.com there is a listing called Ford and Nagle. Under their photograph section there is a listing for a photograph of a Reuben M. French, who apparently died in March, 1874. The photograph was found in Barnesville, Ohio in April, 1996. Hope this helps someone. Marion Scherer
What a wonderful welcome we received from list members! Thanks especially to Lew D. French III, Hugh French Thomason Hoffman, Tom William Thomason, and Julia French Wood. I'm being politically correct here, listing my new-found friends and cousins in alphabetical order, by last name <G>. I was clearly barking up the wrong tree when I said I thought my FRENCH ancestors came to New Jersey from Ireland. Nether Heyford, Northampton, England is clearly the right answer. Not to worry, though, I can still cheer for the green on St. Patrick's Day. I have an O'Brien line from County Clare and, as the old song goes, "You can't take that away from me...." It's nice to hear I've got more Quakers in the tree. I had found several already (Cates), but I've always been a bit jealous of the very extensive Quaker records I've been able to research on my wife's line. They beat the Mormons to the punch on keeping good family records as an associated church function, and I found it a blessing to research old Quaker records while in London last summer. I even stayed at the Penn Club, a fine Quaker guest house in downtown London, which I can highly recommend for those of you who wish quiet and modestly priced accommodations, with breakfasts so large they will last you the entire day. By now my brother John has revealed himself, coming back onto the list from rural Australia, not far from Melbourne. Actually, we are two of seven siblings, but the only two who have been medically certified as having a terminal case of having been smitten by the genealogy bug. John and I can obviously help with data on folks named MAYNARD who married folks named FRENCH, which should be especially helpful to Tom William Thomason. I will start sending Tom rather extensive files on his MAYNARD ancestors, especially on Gibson MAYNARD Sr of Wilkes County, NC. I will not bore this list with that information; however, there may be other folks listening in who are also commonly descended from these Maynards, and they should feel free to send me a direct e-mail to receive the relevant attachments. Enough cheer for now from my 1-square mile island. Hal
