Anyone have a possible connection to Benjamin, James and Ralph FRENCH in Miami Co., OH? Benjamin died in 1812/13 and left his five youngest children needing a guardian. They were James, Rachel, Johanna, John and William FRENCH. James was given by the court of common pleas, January 1812 session, guardianship of them. The very next entry in the court of common pleas for January 1812 was of a Ralph FRENCH being granted a license to operate a tavern for one year. Could Benjamin, James and Ralph be related? Does anyone have these on a tree? Possibly came from Virginia. Culpeper Co is a good guess, but only just that. Thanks. Sharon I Dickson

Sorry to bother you. Although a long time subscriber to this news list I have not posted many messages and I need to do so now in order to satisfy the requirements for a college course I am taking. The course, which is about internet literacy, has a current assignment that requires me to post a message to a newsgroup and make a copy of a reply to hand in to class. I would appreciate it if just one of you guys would respond to this message so I can complete the assignment. Thanks ahead of time as I suspect I shall not be able to thank you individually. ===================================== Donald A. Nelson Jr., OS1, USN(Ret.) 1000 N. I have a copy of the will of William Bryan, Hardin County, Kentucky Will Book D, page 232. Produced in court July 21, 1834. At the bottom of the page, the names mentioned in the will are listed with maiden names added in parenthasis. Obviously, these are not part of the actual will. I am trying to figure out the relationship of William to these women. Can't be children unless step childern. Among those listed are: Elizabeth (Wise) FRENCH, wife of Martin French 1.00, Matilda (Wise) Brewer, wife of John Brewer, .50cents Matilda (Brewer) Spinks, wife of Henry Spinks Can anyone give me any clues? I'd be glad to transcribe the page if it would help.
Glad to see posts again. For a normally busy mail list, I was beginning to think I'd never see some of the terrific posts again. I am descended from MD (St. Marys county) and KY, (Hardin and Jefferson County) FRENCH's. Earliest entry I have is Martin from Galway, IRE, son James. My G-G-Grandfather was Charles FRENCH from Colesburg KY, married Lucinda WISE. His son Lawrence resided in Louisville most of his life. I have quite a bit of this line's information and I am willing to share. Several times over the last two months, my subscription to the FRENCH list has disappeared. I will receive messages for awhile then nothing, at which point I try sending a message. The message comes back Host unknown. If I resubscribe I'm fine for a while longer. This has also happened on another rootsweb mailing list I belong to. Any ideas what is going wrong?

Dorothy, I have a William H. French, son of Nehemiah French and Margaret Shaff. William was born ca 1840, probably in either Middlebury, Tioga Co., PA or in Horseshead, Chemung Co., NY. William was listed as living in Colorado at the time of his father's death in 1906. I haven't been able to track William down. William had two sisters, Sara D. French, b. ca. 1843, m. William R. Morey, d. ca 1869 in Minnesota; and Martha Rosanna French, b. ca 1841, m. Elisha Willoughby, d. unknown. William also had a half sister (is there really such a thing) and a half brother, through Nehemiah's second wife, Olive Churchill, widow of unknown Samson. These siblings were, Esther Elizabeth French, b. 19, April, 1862, Clara, McKean County, PA, m. William H. Hazen, died after 1934; and my great grandfather, John Churchill French, b. 13, august, 1856, Port Allegheny, McKean County, PA, m. Effie Deans Donshea, d. 6, November, 1934. Add to those siblings the two sons of Olive Churchill by her first husband unknown Samson - the boys were George Samson b. ca 1846 and Joseph A. Samson, b. 1850. I do know that Joseph Samson was close to his siblings and later in life he and my great grandfather were in business together. I have Joseph living in Kentucky - then later in Whitefish, Montana. What do you think?? Marion Scherer
