Hello again listers: I am reposting this name, just to see if anyone has any information about NAPOLEON FRENCH. Talk about your dead ends and brick walls. I know absolutely nothing about Napoleon French except that he is buried in Kentucky and was married to my Great Grandmother Charlotte Cress. Napoleon was possibly from West Virginia as was Charlotte and moved to Kentucky/Tenn (Jellico area) shortly after they were married. One of Charlotte's daughters, Nancy Ann Cress married Simeon Green son of Robert Green & Matilda Jackson. Other children of Napoleon French and Charlotte Cress were: 1. Ellen Cress who married William Green (Simeons brother) 2. Elliot Cress (no info on him) Please, please, please if anyone knows anything.... John Green
John, that brick wall MAY be coming down. My 3G Grandfather Napoleon Bonaparte French and a bazillion other descendants of his grandparents Matthew and Sarah Payne were in SW VA/WV, especially Giles, Tazewell and Mercer counties, the latter now in WV. Matthew and Sally's children married into these families among others: Belcher, Hatfield, Smith, McComas, Dingess. Napoleon was son of David and Mary Dingess. He married Jane B. Armstrong daughter of Thomas Temple Armstrong and granddaughter of Martin of NC and TN. Napoleon's sibs included William H.and James Harvey. They were Confederates who ended up on the "wrong" side of the border after the "unpleasantness", i.e. WV and many migrated then. See anything that looks familiar? Jackie
I tried sending this earlier, but never saw it posted. Sorry if it goes out twice. Hi, I happened to be checking out one of the daily (10-day free) databases at Ancestry.com and found a number of FRENCH's. The database was the Kansas City, MO city directory. Since I know many of my KY French's moved on to Missouri, thought I'd take a look. I was very interested in an entry for Lucinda FRENCH, listed as widow of Charles. My g-g-grandfather was a Charles FRENCH from Hardin county, KY who married Lucinda WISE. I have birth and marriage dates,(Hardin county) but no death dates or places for either. I'm thinking there could possibly be a link and wonder if anyone out there connects to Charles or Lucinda FRENCH in Missouri?
What date did the marriage of Lucinda and Charles take place? I have a WISE connection in that area...ties into my RICE family....know others who are researching WISE also.....thanks, Jan Lund -----Original Message----- From: Laurie Ronan <jronan@bellsouth.net> To: FRENCH-L@rootsweb.com <FRENCH-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, April 05, 2000 5:02 PM Subject: [FRENCH-L] Missouri, FRENCH CHARLES and LUCINDA >I tried sending this earlier, but never saw it posted. >Sorry if it goes out twice. >Hi, I happened to be checking out one of the daily (10-day free) >databases at Ancestry.com and found a number of FRENCH's. I am looking for the parents of Joseph P. French born 23 March 1812 and married Mary W. Brown about 1832/33 in Marion Co. Georgia. This is the first time I have seen a Joseph P. French listed. You show Joseph P. French born Dec 25. 1767 and dying between 1801 and 1810. As a long shot could he have had a son beyond 1810. One of my aunts suspected that the P. stood for Pickney ( could be spelled differently). We believe our Joseph P. French came out of S. Carolina. Seems like a long shot but had to try. Thanks, Joe F. I have obtained a copy of the "Supplement to the Complete Book of Emigrants in Bondage 1614-1775. It is only a supplement and is only 86 pages. It didn't help me much but I will be happy to do lookups. I really hoped it would have a PRO source number but it didn't. Anyone know how to find reference numbers to PRO items. Dear Joyce, You mention the Herald as being the paper but what town is this paper printed in? I have a Mattie French born in Jackson County, Ohio in1857. She was still in Jackson County in 1880 as is in the census. Would appreciate any information that you can give me. This one would be a sister of my ggrandfather. Thank you . Kathy Leigh Saw your post about an Edward French of Ipswich and I have one of them mentioned in my genealogy. My great uncle compiled "Ancestors and Descendants of Samuel French the Joiner of Stratford Connecticut in 1939. He has pretty good detail from Samuel but it is very sketchy back then as to others, for your perusal I include the following excerpt from our genealogy: "Many of the errors found on pages 1204 and 1205 of the "History of Old Stratford" by [Rev. Samuel] Orcutt, may be corrected from the information herein given. Whether Orcutt or Mr. Benjamin L. Swan, his collaborator, was responsible for the errors, their's was a labor of love and much of value has been preserved. The first three generaltions given on page 1204, namely 1. Lieut. William French, who came in 1635 to Cambridge, Mass., in the good ship "Defence"; 2. Francis French of Milford and Derby, Conn.; 3. . Sergt. Samuel French of Stratford were not closely related. No evidence has been found that Francis of Milford and Derby was a son of Lieut. William. Sergt. Samuel French of Stratford was undoubtedly that Samuel son of Thomas and Deborah (Button) French of Guilford, Conn. born Aug. 21 1667 in Guilford. Orcutt gives nine of the eleven children of Samuel French, the joiner, as children of Samuel French, junior, of Stratford and grandchildren of Sergt. Samuel French. To this genealogical tragedy of errors several professional and amateur genealogists have contributed by stating that Lieut. William French of Cambridge was baptized in Halstead, Essex Co., England, March 15, 1602 and was descended, through three generations of the name of Thomas, from Thomas Frenche, the elder of Wethersfield, County Essex, England, who died in 1599. Yet Mrs. Elizabeth (French) Bartlett, descendent of Lieut. William French, and "Record Searcher in England for the Committee on English Research of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1908-1917", published in New England Historical & Genealogical Register, Vol 65, pp. 284-286, proof that the William French who was baptized March 15, 1603, in Halstead, Essex Co., England, died in London in 1621, unmarried, and that his estate was administered by his brother, John, and sister Elianor. Probably the New England immigrants, Lt. William of Cambridge, John of Dorchester and Braintree, Edward of Ipswich, Thomas of Guilford and Francis of Milford and Derby were from the large French family of seafaring folk of County Suffolk, and may have been quite closely related, as these names were frequently found in Saxmundham and vicinity, in Suffolk, in the 17th century. Sorry for the length of the except - didn't want to take too much out of contect. Bill French
Hello Listers: Does anyone have a copy of "Supplement to The Complete Book of Emigrants in Bondage, 1614-1775 by Peter Wilson Coldham? I am requesting a lookup for the FRENCH surname. Ray

To Mary & Kathy, Thank you so much for replying to my questions about Edward French. Your explanations seem correct since there are conflicts about who his parents are. I appreciate your help, and, you know, getting back to 1600+ is not that bad. So I'll just go with what is known about Edward and Ann? Thanks, Elizabeth

I do not have any information on Edward's parents but I have the following information from the "Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury" pg 166 1 Edward FRENCH, of Salisbury, "tailor," recd. land in the "first division," bought land in 1642; selectman 1646-8; "commoner" and taxed, 1650 and '52; name on most of the early lists. He m. Ann ______;* d. Dec. 28, 1674[S]; will April 10, 1673; April 13, 1675. Wid. Ann d. March 9, 1682-3[S]; inv. est. April 10, 1683. He was of Ipswich in 1637; My grandmother researched this line and had written in pencil she wrote "Ann Swayne, dau. of Bennett Swayne" *Richard Goodale, Sen., called Edward French his "bro." - grandmother's notes says "Masonic" I just thought I would pass this other information along.
